The Insider - Volume 8

Best of Richmond, Memorial Day Weekend, Summer Movie Lineup

Here's the latest

The annual Best of Richmond results are in!  Organized by Style Weekly, Richmonders with access to the internet have the ability to register online and vote for their favorites across an array of over 100 categories including food, beverage, arts, people, fitness, music, festivals, and more!  Spend the next 15 minutes checking out the winners here. One thing to note: over the last several years there have been some tried and true winners for certain categories so this year they included "Hall of Fame Winner" alongside the first place winner for 2018.  Think Stella's, Joe's Inn, Akida, etc.  Lastly, shout out to our member partner, Pupatella, for winning first place for Best Local Pizza with Bottom's Up and Belmont Pizza coming in second and third respectively. Friendly reminder that members get 10% off all day everyday at Pupatella whoop whoop!!

The top of Carytown will be completely transformed into Carytown Exchange by 2019!  Earlier this month, Bizsense reported a Florida-based developer will spend between $40 million and $45 million to create 120,000 square feet of retail space. The shopping center will be anchored by Publix but the rest of the tenants are unknown at this time.  We are equal parts excited and nervous about this transformation. What's that they say about change? We hope we will love the new Carytown vibe but we'll just have to wait and see! [nervously bites nails and looks all around] It will be fine. It will be great actually.

The Big Lebowski, Wayne's World, Jaws, and movie classics alike are all on the list for Veil Brewing's Summer Movie lineup!  You can catch a film the first and third Friday of the month starting June 1 through August 19.  Showtime is 8pm and they'll be serving hot, fresh popcorn along with cold craft beer. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT? I'll be hopping on Amazon after I finish writing this to snag some comfy outdoor recliners (you can byo-chair) because I really can't imagine we'll be anywhere else for the rest of the Summer (well, on the first and third Friday at least). Party on, Wayne.

Memorial Day Weekend is generally pretty slow around Richmond in terms of happenings (seriously you should have heard Sean's commentary as he struggled to pull together the "What's Happening" section below, it's still good though so give it a peep). Public, private, and community pools are opening, cook-outs are planned, and lots of folks are headed to the river, lake, or beach to celebrate the unofficial start of Summer. But if you're new to Richmond, you don't really know anyone, or you're still trying to find your way around, it can feel like a bad belly flop. I moved here 7 years ago from the Jersey Shore where Memorial Day Weekend, a.k.a. MDW, was one of the most exciting and celebrated holidays (enter Summer) so I found it particularly hard in RVA during the Summer months those first few years. SO, with that all being said, I wanted to put together a quick guide of Summer-ish things to do as we head into this long weekend.

1)   The Boathouse at Sunday Park is a waterfront bar and restaurant and the only place I've found in the Richmond region that really feels like Summertime at the beach, river, etc. Sit outside on their patio and enjoy the beautiful views, light breeze, and often live music.

2)    There are plenty of public pools available around Richmond. Here is acomplete list on the Richmond Parks & Rec page.

3)    You can also buy a pool membership and put together a pretty solid list including pricing for each. Scroll down past public indoor and outdoor pools. A quick Google search should also yield plenty of results.

4)     Throw a cook-out at a public park! If you don't own a grill, or you simply don't want to host people at your home, head out to a public park! A few parks with grills include Bryan Park and Pocahontas State Park

5)      To the same tune, you can also head outside for a picnic. Let's Share a Dish put together a really fantastic list of paired food & location options for a great picnic.

6)      And last but not least, the James River is the perfect place to cool off! We suggest saving this idea for later as water levels are extremely high following all this rain we've been getting and you should only swim in the James when the water level is below 5'. Bookmark that handy site for future reference and also check out this article by Richmond Times-Dispatch for a helpful swimming hole guide.

Got more ideas? Share them here and we'll add it to the list!
