Join us for an unforgettable evening of connection, inspiration and empowerment as we host an Impact Screening of the award-winning documentary Daughters. This powerful film follows the journey of four young girls as they prepare for a special Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers.
We are honored to welcome Sistah Angela Patton, a visionary leader in the Greater Richmond community and Chief Executive Officer of Girls For A Change, and co-director of the film. Her extraordinary work has earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious “Champions of Change” award presented by President Obama in 2016.
Following the screening, Sistah Angela will join us for a thoughtful Q&A discussion following the film, moderated by Adrienne Cole Johnson, Chief of Family and Community Engage, cofounder of The Richmond Night Market, and a celebrated recipient of Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 Award.
Hosted by Orchard House Middle School, an independent school for girls in the heart of Richmond, this event is a celebration of the strength, courage, and determination that all girls possess. We invite you to share in this special evening honoring the power of girl storytelling and the incredible individuals working to shape a brighter future for all.
About the film
A moving portrait of empathy and forgiveness, Daughters traces an eight-year documentary journey by filmmaker Natalie Rae and social change advocate Angela Patton. The film intimately follows Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja’Ana as they prepare for a momentous Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers. Speaking openly about their aspirations, dreams, and the emotional toll of their fathers’ absence, compounded by the constraints of virtual visits, these girls reveal a profound wisdom and resilience beyond their years. As they navigate heartbreak, anger, and uncertainty, they seize a precious opportunity to forge connections.
Daughters sheds light on the complexities of familial bonds strained by the unforgiving barriers of the criminal justice system and emphasizes that the foundation of community healing lies within the family unit.
About Orchard House Middle School
Orchard House Middle School is a thoughtfully designed school for girls in grades five through eight, located in Richmond, Virginia’s Historic Fan District. The school’s mission is to educate and inspire middle school girls in a responsive, academically engaging community that fosters each girl's intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, emotional integrity, and physical well-being. Orchard House Middle School was established upon the foundational principle that every girl is extraordinary and has the capacity to lead. We are excited for the opportunity to showcase a film that showcases the strength and resiliency that all young girls are capable of. We are even more excited to support the incredible work of alumnae parent, Sistah Angela Patton.
Why an impact screening?
Daughters has toured national and international film festivals, and it's been available to stream on Netflix since August 2024, but an impact screening is dedicated to gathering and connecting community around a shared purpose. By attending a screening that is free to the public and getting a chance to discuss the film live with co-director and local changemaker Angela Patton, the audience is taking part in something bigger than simply watching a film. The collective experience is intended to drive action, inspire meaningful reflection, and spark lasting community connections.
