Samurai Armor from the Collection of Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller

Samurai Armor from the Collection of Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller

Travel back in time for an awe-inspiring look at Japan’s exquisitely crafted samurai armor. Coming to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller collection—one of the largest and finest collections in the world—the assembled works offer a glimpse of samurai history with a focus on ceremonial adornments created within the flourishing artistic culture of the Edo period. Offering a rare personal encounter with these stunning works of art, the exhibition of more than 140 objects features full suits of armor and an array of weapons, helmets, masks, horse accessories, woodblock prints, and textiles. As a worldwide fascination with and reverence for samurai warriors persists today, VMFA’s immersive exhibition delves into the storied world of this elite military class, tracing the evolution and artistic legacy of its famed armor.

The samurai, whose name means “those who serve”, rose to preeminence as masterful swordsmen, archers, and equestrians beginning in the 12th century. During the Edo period (1615–1868), they continued to dominate political, social, and cultural aspects of Japan until their fall in the late 19th century. Celebrated for their bravery and honor in times of battle, in times of peace the samurai dominated as a prestigious class, and their armor continued to be a symbol of pride and pageantry. The legacy of craftsmanship passed down through generations and retained through the Edo period and even to present day attests to the samurai’s enduring significance. At VMFA, the works of art on view belong to the remarkable collection of more than a thousand works amassed by Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller.

This exhibition is organized by The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum, Dallas.

The Wide Wide Sea with Hampton Sides!

History lovers, this is for you! Hampton Sides will be in conversation with local author Dean King at the store.

FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

About the Book:

Captain James Cook has been viewed by millions as both hero and villain, but his expeditions were enormously consequential. He was a peerless navigator and cartographer, a fearless and able naval captain, an embodiment of Enlightenment values and scientific acumen, and a figure ahead of his time. Yet the arrival of his ships heralded invasion, disease, colonization, and cultural decimation. Hampton both illuminates the past and shows how events hundreds of years ago not only shaped our world but still resonate today. Hampton traveled all over the world – Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond - during the process of writing the book, and the result is this doggedly researched and mesmerizing account of Cook’s last voyage.

About the Author:

HAMPTON SIDES is the author of the bestselling narrative histories Ghost Soldiers, Blood and Thunder, Hellhound On His Trail, In the Kingdom of Ice, and On Desperate Ground. Hampton has been a contributor to Outside, National Geographic, Smithsonian, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and many other newspapers and magazines. A native of Memphis and a Yale graduate, Hampton is a board member of the Society of American Historians and has an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Colorado College. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Dean King is an award-winning author of ten nonfiction books, including Skeletons on the Zahara, Unbound, Patrick O’Brian: A Life Revealed, and The Feud. His writing has appeared in Granta, Garden & Gun, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, New York magazine, and The New York Times. He is the chief storyteller in two History Channel documentaries and a producer of its series Hatfields & McCoys: White Lightning. An internationally known speaker, King has appeared on NPR’s Talk of the Nation, ABC’s World News Tonight, PBS’s American Experience, BBC Radio, Arte TV France/Germany, and at TEDx. 804 Fest at RCR

804 Fest is back!

Get ready for another night celebrating local Richmond bands! Enjoy live music by Flight Club, Hazelgrove, and Lunch Special & The Cafeteria!

Flight Club:

Flight Club is a roaring blender combining authentic rock and catchy melodies with the punk rock energy the troop cut their teeth with. Members Sam Tucker, Charlie Mahoney, Alex Triantafilledes, and Harry Ellis III met as regulars of the Richmond pop-punk scene and got their start playing short sets in small rooms packed from ceiling to floor. As the band gained experience in years, they’ve never let go of the raw energy they found in the small rooms.

Taking a focus on writing, the band released their debut LP, “Until the Sun Drowns” in the Summer of 2021. The full length allowed the band to expand on the furthest reaches of what Flight Club could be. Each pillar of the band's roots found itself bolder and taller. Alongside the louder-than-life rock attitude, the band found new emotional depth in their sounds. The record explored the highs and lows of life and death and packed it up into an approachable record with something for everybody.

After years of performing the record live, Flight Club has returned to writing to imbibe their sound with the life lessons they’ve earned along the way. You can explore many new songs from the band in 2024.

Hazelgrove:

Hazelgrove began in Richmond, Va and has transformed from its origins in synth heavy hip hop into a blend of r&b, indie rock, and psychedelia. Artists such as Frank Ocean, Toro y Moi, and Omar Apollo have inspired the artist heavily over the past few years. Hazelgrove’s mission is to combine the organic and the digital together to create a futuristic sound that still breathes. Hazelgrove was voted into the top five Richmond artists of 2024 in the pop category in RVA Magazine and has played live synth for other prominent Virginia artists such as Tommy Richman and Boris the Lucid. Their new single “Fade to Blue” came out in March with production and guitar from their closest collaborator, Richmond artist and guitarist, CAS.

Lunch Special & The Cafeteria

Lunch Special and the Cafeteria is a group that ignites stages with their explosive energy and undeniable talent. Their music creates an experience that's as captivating as it is unforgettable. From the intricate wordplay of their lyrics to the incredible melodies of their vocalists, every track from Lunch Special and the Cafeteria is a testament to their passion and dedication to the craft. With a style that transcends boundaries and defies expectations, they’ll have you up on your feet all night! Get ready to vibe with the infectious energy of Lunch Special and the Cafeteria.

RÉVÉLER CABARET: SWINGIN’ JAZZ, VIBRANT BURLESQUE, AND MESMERIZING POETRY

Révéler presents a magical, intoxicating cabaret show packed with exceptional performers and wild surprises.

This cabaret variety show features an exquisite jazz quartet, vibrant burlesque, mesmerizing poetry, a glamorous hobo, champagne, elegant snacks, and one rather hilarious game. Not all at the same time, of course.

Emcee Carmel Clavin conjures a spell of spectacle and mirth, while weaving songs of love, loss, and gothic soul into the proceedings. She will make you laugh a lot and cry a little at the same damn time and for all the right reasons.

In the music spotlight, an exquisite jazz quartet featuring Michael Hawkins and the Brotherhood with special guest Marty Nau on tenor saxophone. Marty played with such big bands as the “Blues Alley Big Band”, Bill Potts Big Band, and Guy Lombardo. He has performed with the National Symphony and Richmond Symphony and has backed up such performers as Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Daniels, Stanely Turrentine, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Ethel Ennis, Nancy Wilson, Maureen McGovern, and Snooky Young. Also performing: Dr. Weldon Hill (piano), Mike Hawkins (bass), and Billy Williams, Jr. (drums).

Burlesque performer Evelyn Devere began her striptease career in 2010, subsequently producing the Ménage à Trois Burlesque and vaudeville revival troupe Carnivalesque. In 2016, Evelyn co-founded the Wham Bam Glitter Glam touring show, showcasing the fabulous variety of performance styles within burlesque.

Delivering poetry fire is the RVA-based collective The Writer's Den, founded by Virginia's inaugural poet laureate Roscoe Burnems.

Complimentary champagne and elegant snacks available, as well as a cash bar with groovy cocktails and a kitchen sending lovin’ from the oven.

A House Like an Accordion Launch Party with Audrey Burges!

We're so excicted to celebreate local friend Audrey's second novel! She will be talking with Andi at Sam Miller's Restaurant.

FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

About the Book:

A woman searches for her missing father in order to reconcile the many strange and fantastical secrets of her past before she loses herself completely in this deeply profound and magical novel by Audrey Burges.

Keryth Miller is disappearing.

Between the growing distance between herself and her husband, the demands of two teenage daughters, and an all-encompassing burnout, she sometimes feels herself fading away. Actual translucence, though—that’s new. When Keryth wakes up one morning with her hand completely gone, she is frantic. But she quickly realizes two things: If she is disappearing, it’s because her father, an artist with the otherworldly ability to literally capture life in his art, is drawing her. And if he’s drawing her, that means he’s still alive.

But where has he been for the past twenty-five years, and why is he doing the one thing he always warned her not to? Never draw from life, Keryth. Every line exacts a cost. As Keryth continues to slowly fade away, she retraces what she believes to be her father's last steps through the many homes of her past, determined to find him before it’s too late and she disappears enti

About the Author:

Audrey Burges writes novels, humor, short fiction, and essays in Richmond, Virginia. Her presence is tolerated by her two rambunctious children and very patient husband. She is a frequent contributor to numerous humor outlets, including McSweeney’s, and her stories and essays have appeared in Pithead Chapel, Cease, Cows, and in lengthy diatribes in the Notes app on her phone. Audrey was born and raised in Arizona by her linguist parents, and she currently lives in Virginia.

Bird Songs—A Listeners’ Guide

Bird Songs—A Listeners’ Guide

Advance tickets: $13.50

Profs and Pints Richmond presents: “Bird Songs—A Listeners’ Guide,” on hearing and understanding our feathered friends’ messages, with Stephen Ferguson, visiting assistant professor of biology at the University of Richmond and physiobehavioral ecologist who extensively researches birds.

Song fills the air each spring as birds shake off the winter and stake their claims. For millennia writers from Aristotle to Darwin have drawn inspiration from their melodies. Yet we remain nothing more than eavesdroppers of conversations in unknown languages, and left wondering: What are birds saying, and to whom?

Gain a better understanding of birds’ songs—and what we can learn from them—with Professor Stephen Ferguson, who has researched bird brains, behavior, and physiology throughout the nation and around the world.

He’ll discuss how male birds learn and remember how to sing, using a brain that shrinks and grows every year. He’ll show how the meaning of songs changes for different listeners, from lovers to rivals. Competition breeds excellence, and song is no exception – bird song drives mate choice, lays claim to territories, and is passed on from father to son.

But that’s only half the story, for what is a performance without an audience? Diving into the world of female bird song, he’ll discuss the historical reasons that female song has been ignored, what that song accomplishes, and where you can hear it—maybe even in your own backyard.

You’ll leave the talk still an eavesdropper, but with much more comprehension of the messages being sent through the air and the drama unfolding all around you. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

SOME CUPID KILLS WITH ARROWS, SOME WITH TRAPS...

Kicking off the Richmond Shakespeare Festival at Agecroft Hall is Shakespeare’s beloved Much Ado About Nothing. Masquerades reveal as much as they hide in this hilarious comedy. There is no comedic couple quite as beguiling as Beatrice and Benedick. Wielding words as both weapon and armor (but always with a charming, effervescent glint), their banter is code for so many things - part longing, part loathing, part love. All of it a threat to their carefully cultivated swag. Their chemistry is a barely restrained force of nature. It may just break its bindings. A perpetual Shakespearean favorite; rich, uplifting and oh-so-funny.

RICHMOND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Much Ado About Nothing

Hall of Mirrors Launch Party with John Copenhaver!

We're so excited to celebrate the launch of "Hall of Mirrors" with local author and friend of Fountain John Copenhaver! John will be joined by K.T. Nguyen at the store!

FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED

About the Book:

When a popular mystery novelist dies suspiciously, his writing partner must untangle the author’s connection to a serial killer, in award-winning John Copenhaver’s new novel set in 1950s McCarthy-era Washington, DC.

In May 1954, Lionel Kane witnesses his apartment engulfed in flames with his lover and writing partner, Roger Raymond, inside. Police declare it a suicide due to gas ignition, but Lionel refuses to believe Roger was suicidal.

A month earlier, Judy Nightingale and Philippa Watson—the tenacious and troubled heroines from The Savage Kind—attend a lecture by Roger and, being eager fans, befriend him. He has just been fired from his day job at the State Department, another victim of the Lavender Scare, an anti-gay crusade led by figures like Senator Joseph McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover, claiming homosexuals are security risks. Little do Judy and Philippa know, but their obsessive manhunt of the past several years has fueled the flames of his dismissal.

They have been tracking their old enemy Adrian Bogdan, a spy and vicious serial killer protected by powerful forces in the government. He’s on the rampage again, and the police are ignoring his crimes. Frustrated, they send their research to the media and their favorite mystery writer anonymously, hoping to inspire someone, somehow, to publish on the crimes—anything to draw Bogdan out. But has their persistence brought deadly forces to the writing team behind their most beloved books?

In the wake of Roger’s death, Lionel searches for clues, but Judy and Philippa threaten his quest, concealing dark secrets of their own. As the crimes of the past and present converge, danger mounts and the characters race to uncover the truth, even if it means bending their moral boundaries to stop a killer.

About the Author

John Copenhaver’s historical crime novel Dodging and Burning won the 2019 Macavity Award for Best First Mystery and garnered Anthony, Strand Critics, Barry, and Lambda Literary Award nominations. The Savage Kind, his second novel, won the 2021 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBTQ Mystery and was a finalist for Left Coast Crime’s Best Historical Mystery. He cohosts on the House of Mystery Radio Show, and he is a co-founder of Queer Crime Writers and an at-large board member of Mystery Writers of America. He teaches fiction writing and literature at Virginia Commonwealth University and is a faculty mentor in the University of Nebraska’s Low-Residency MFA program. He grew up in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and lives in Richmond, VA, with his husband, artist Jeffery Paul (Herrity).

K. T. Nguyen is a former magazine editor. Her features have appeared in Glamour, Shape, and Fitness. RICHMOND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Much Ado About Nothing

Holy City with Henry Wise!

Holy City with Henry Wise!

Henry's debut is sure to be a hit! He will be at Benchtop Brewing, one of our newest local friends, and will be chatting about writing with VA favorite, SA Cosby!

Benchtop is located at 434 Hull St, Richmond, VA 23224.

FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

About the Book:

HOLY CITY is the captivating thriller from debut author Henry Wise about a deputy sheriff who must work alongside an unpredictable private detective after he finds himself on the outs from his sheriff’s department over his unwillingness to look the other way when an innocent man is arrested for murder.

After a decade of exile precipitated by the tragic death of his mother, Will Seems returns home from Richmond to rural Southern Virginia, taking a job as deputy sheriff in a landscape given way to crime and defeat. Impoverished and abandoned, this remote land of tobacco plantations, razed forests, and boarded-up homes seems stuck in the past in a state that is trying to forget its complex history and move on.

Will’s efforts to go about his life are wrecked when a mysterious, brutal homicide claims the life of an old friend, Tom Janders, forcing Will to face the true impetus for his return: not to honor his mother’s memory, but to pay a debt to a Black friend who, in an act of selfless courage years ago, protected Will and suffered permanent disfigurement for it.

Meanwhile, a man Will knows to be innocent is arrested for Tom’s murder, and despite Will’s pleas, his boss seems all too content to wrap up the case and move on. Will must weigh his personal guilt against his public duty when the local Black community hires Bennico Watts, an unpredictable private detective from Richmond, to help him find the real killer. It would seem an ideal pairing—she has experience, along with plenty of sand, and Will is privy to the details of the case—but it doesn’t take long for either to realize they much prefer to operate alone.

Bennico and Will clash as they each defend their untraditional ways on a wild ride that wends deep into the Snakefoot, an underworld wilderness that for hundreds of years has functioned as a hideout for outcasts—the forgotten and neglected and abused—leaving us enmeshed in the tangled history of a region and its people that leaves no one innocent, no one free, nothing sacred.

About the Author:

HENRY WISE is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Mississippi MFA Program. His work has appeared in Shenandoah, Nixes Mate, Radar Poetry, Clackamas, and elsewhere. Holy City is his first novel.

S. A. Cosby is an Anthony, Barry, and Macavity Award-winning writer from Southeastern Virginia. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Razorblade Tears, which was recommended on Barack Obama's Summer Reading List and named a Best Book of 2021 by NPR, the Washington Post, TIME, Roxane Gay, and more. His novel Blacktop Wasteland won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was named a best book of the year by NPR, The Guardian, and Library Journal, among others. When not writing, he is an avid hiker and chess player.

Shae with Mesha Maren

Shae with Mesha Maren

Fountain favorite Mesha Maren returns with her gorgeous new novel, Shae! She will be talking with Andi in store.

FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

About the Book:

A queer coming-of-age novel about addiction, belonging, and loving a place that doesn’t always love you back.

When sixteen-year-old Shae meets Cam, who is new to their small town in West Virginia, she thinks she has found someone who is everything she has ever wanted in a companion. The two become fast friends, and then more. And when Shae ends up pregnant, Cam begins a different transition—trying on clothes that Shae can no longer fit into and using female pronouns. Shae tries to be fully supportive as Cam becomes the person she wants and needs to be.

After a traumatic C-section and the birth of their daughter, Eva, Shae is given opioids to manage the intense pain. During the first year of Eva’s life, Shae’s dependence shifts from pain management to addiction, and her days begin to revolve around getting more pills. In the heart of West Virginia, opioids are dispensed as freely as candy, and Shae is just one of many to fall victim to addiction. Meanwhile, as Cam continues to transition, she embraces new relationships and faces the reality of being a trans woman in rural America.

Shae is as much about these two young women as it is about the home they both love despite its limitations. Following the acclaimed Sugar Run and Perpetual West, this is Mesha Maren’s most intense and intimate novel yet.

About the Author:

Mesha Maren is the author of the novels Sugar Run and Perpetual West (Algonquin Books). Her short stories and essays can be read in Tin House, The Oxford American, The Guardian, Crazyhorse, Triquarterly, The Southern Review, Ecotone, Sou’wester, Hobart, Forty Stories: New Writing from Harper Perennial, and elsewhere. She was the recipient of the 2015 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize, a 2014 Elizabeth George Foundation grant, an Appalachian Writing Fellowship from Lincoln Memorial University, and fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and the Ucross Foundation. She was the 2018-2019 Kenan Visiting Writer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is an Associate Professor of the Practice of English at Duke University.

Bright and Tender Dark with Joanna Pearson

We are so excited to host Joanna for her chilling debut novel! She will be talking with Andi at the store.

FREE REGISTRATION REQUIRED!

About the Book:

In the earliest days of the new millennium, Karlie Richards is found murdered in her apartment near the University of North Carolina. Two decades later, those who knew Karlie—and those who just knew of her—remain consumed by the mystery of the charismatic, beautiful college student’s death. Jumping between the present and the very last days of the ‘90s, Pearson weaves a prismatic literary mystery about a community haunted by the unknown.

Pearson’s work as a practicing psychiatrist lends stunning psychological insight to each character we meet. There’s Karlie’s freshman year roommate, Joy, now middle-aged and mid-divorce, living in the same college town and desperate for a new beginning. When she stumbles upon a twenty-year-old letter from Karlie, Joy becomes convinced the man in prison for her murder was wrongfully convicted. Soon she is deep into the dark world of internet conspiracy theorists captivated by the sensational aftermath of Karlie’s murder. There’s KC, the night manager at the building where Karlie was killed; Sheri, the mother of the intellectually disabled man convicted of the crime; and Jacob Hendrix, the charming professor with whom, as Joy knows all too well, Karlie was romantically entangled before her death.

About the Author:

Joanna Pearson is the author of two short story collections and a book of poetry. Her stories have appeared in The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Mystery and Suspense, and many other publications. She has won the Drue Heinz Literature Prize and been a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Awards, the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, and the Virginia Literary Awards. She lives in North Carolina, where she works as a psychiatrist.

RICHMOND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Much Ado About Nothing

The Great State of West Florida with Kent Wascom

The Great State of West Florida with Kent Wascom

We're thrilled to welcome Virginia author Kent to the store! He'll be in converstion with Steve Weddle at the store.

About the Book:

From the beloved author often compared to Cormac McCarthy and Joyce Carol Oates (Washington Post), a startling and unconventional neon-pink Western of vengeance, family, and first love as two warring factions vie for control of a blood-soaked Gulf Coast

It’s 2026, and Rally is thirteen years old. The long, hot Louisiana summer looms before him like a face-melting stretch of blacktop, and the country is talking civil war while his adoptive family acts more vicious than ever. Rally spends his days wondering about his dead father’s people, the Woolsacks of West Florida, who long ago led a failed rebellion to carve their own state from the swamp and sugarsand of the coast. That family might have been his too—if his mother and a crew of vigilantes hadn’t tried to kill them all back when he was a baby. Rally lives in the shadow of guilt and in fear of the only other survivors: his uncle Rodney, now a professional gunfighter on the app DU3L, where would-be shooters square off in armed combat, and his mysterious cousin Destiny, whereabouts unknown, whose own violence brought the massacre to a screeching end.

When the Woolsacks’ legacy is co-opted by Troy Yarbrough, a far-right politician leading a movement to turn the Florida panhandle into a white Christian ethnostate, Rodney bursts into Rally’s life, taking him on a journey into the wild heart of West Florida, where they join forces with a woman known only as the Governor—part prophet, part machine, with her own blazing vision for West Florida. Soon Rally will learn what West Florida means to the Woolsacks, and the lengths to which they will go to protect it, all while he falls for the machine-gun-toting, ATV-riding girl next door.

An explosive, genre-redefining take on family, violence, and the costs of preserving a legacy in a sun-soaked world of megachurch magnates, suburban guerillas, and robotic warriors, The Great State of West Florida is also the tender coming-of-age story of a young man caught in the wheels of something bigger than he knows.

About the Author:

KENT WASCOM is the author of The New Inheritors, Secessia, and The Blood of Heaven. He was born in New Orleans and raised in Pensacola, Florida. The Blood of Heaven was named a best book of the year by the Washington Post and NPR, was a semifinalist for the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award, and was longlisted for the Flaherty-Dunnan Award for First Fiction. Wascom was awarded the 2012 Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival Prize for Fiction and selected as one of Gambit’s 40 Under 40. He lives in Norfolk, Virginia, where he directs the Creative Writing Program at Old Dominion University.

Steve Weddle is the author of The County Line, a 1930s heist novel set in Arkansas. His previous book, Country Hardball, which The New York Times called “downright dazzling,” is a collection of connected short stories. A former newspaper editor, he is the cofounder of the crime fiction collective Do Some Damage, the cocreator of the noir magazine Needle, and has taught short story writing at LitReactor.

RICHMOND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Much Ado About Nothing

RICHMOND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - Much Ado About Nothing

Museum District Association Mother’s Day House & Garden Tour
May

1:00 PM13:00

Museum District Association Mother’s Day House & Garden Tour

  • The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

EVENT INFORMATION

Thank you for your purchase! You are attending the 28th annual Museum District Association’s Mother’s Day House and Garden Tour, which takes place on Sunday, May 12, 2024 from 1:00–6:00 p.m.

THIS IS NOT A TICKET.

You will need to pick up your ticket at the Will Call table at the Hospitality Center inside the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (428 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard, rear entrance off Kensington Avenue). There, you’ll find parking, tour guidebooks, and restrooms.

PHYSICAL TICKETS ARE REQUIRED TO ENTER THE HOMES.

HOUSE RULES

  • Do not touch furniture, fixtures, or decorative items.

  • No food or beverages inside the homes or library. Resealable water bottles are okay.

  • No high or pointy-heeled shoes (they can damage old floors). Slip on shoes recommended.

  • No smoking inside any tour facility, in line outside a home, or on the trolley.

  • No strollers, backpacks, or large bags. Children under three must be carried when inside homes.

  • Pets are not permitted (except service animals).

  • No photography or video recording inside tour homes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Parking

Parking is available in the lot behind the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (428 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard at Kensington Avenue) and along surface streets throughout the Museum District. Please note the paid parking deck behind the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (200 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard) is only open until 5pm.

Where do we go first?

Once you pick up your ticket from Will Call, you will see the addresses of the tour homes listed on the back. Start at any address you like! You’ll find a suggested walking map in the guidebook, which is available with your ticket at Will Call, or

Restrooms

Yes, at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. There are no public restrooms inside tour homes.

Trolley Info

Take a break and ride awhile! The free, air-conditioned trolley departs from the Virginia Museum of History and Culture parking lot and runs a continuous 20-minute loop from 1:00–6:00 p.m. Check the guidebook map and look for signs at trolley stops.

What if I don’t get to all the tour homes?

Our hope is that guests will have time to visit all homes if they choose, but it is possible that variables including weather, total turnout, and wait times might not allow that to happen. We recommend you and your party review the tour map and the home descriptions in the tour guidebook, flag the homes you most want to see, and plan your route accordingly.

Is the tour handicapped accessible?

Unfortunately, no. The Museum District Mother’s Day House and Garden Tour is a 2.5-mile, rain-or-shine walking tour over the public streets and walkways of a busy urban neighborhood. Our tour homes, many of which are over a century old, include rail-free exterior stairs and porches, narrow interior passageways, and uneven flooring. We regret that our sites are not handicapped accessible, and that we are unable to accommodate walkers, wheelchairs, or strollers inside homes or on the trolley.

What if it rains? What is your refund policy?

Our tour is a rain-or shine non-profit community fundraiser. Tour tickets are non-refundable for any reason.

May children attend the tour?

Our tour takes guests through private homes and the contents of which are most likely not geared toward young children. Strollers are not allowed inside tour homes or on the trolley. Children under three must be carried when inside homes. Children 17 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times inside tour sites and on the trolley, and we do not offer discounted tickets for children over the age of three.

Where do the proceeds go?

The Mother’s Day House and Garden Tour is the Museum District Association’s sole annual fundraiser. Each year, proceeds from the event are reinvested in our neighborhood for maintenance, beautification, and enhanced safety. We donate 25% of each year’s proceeds back into community non-profit organizations. 2023 recipients included Albert Hill Middle School, Health Brigade, Humphrey Calder Community Center for after-school programming, Meals on Wheels/Feed More, Belmont Library, Lois Harrison Jones Elementary School (formerly John B. Cary), and Prevent-A-Liter. We also established the MDA Educational Scholarship Fund in 2017.

By purchasing an MDA House Tour ticket, the holder releases from any and all claims, actions, or causes of action, and waives, releases, discharges and agrees not to sue, the Museum District Association, its officers, representatives or agents, any of the homes or homeowners whose homes or apartments are on the 2024 tour, or any of the event volunteers participating in planning or presentation of the 2024 MDA House Tour, of or from any liability whatsoever for personal injury, accident or illness (including death), and/or property loss, however caused, that arises from, and/or in any way relates to or arises from the holder’s participation in the MDA Mother’s Day House & Garden Tour. This knowing waiver of liability does not apply to injury to persons or property that is adjudicated to be caused by willful misconduct, gross negligence, or intentional torts.

Artistic Narratives : a Fusion of Visual and Performance Art

Artistic Narratives : a Fusion of Visual and Performance Art

The art showcase curated by Helene Ruiz, uncovers the captivating interplay between art and
storytelling. The exhibit features an assortment of visual works displayed in the gallery, coupled with a live performance in the theater during the opening reception.

This exhibition endeavors to underscore the profound potential of visual art in conveying narratives and
evoking emotions with visual works by artists Helene Ruiz and Orisegun Bennett-Olomidun, by
incorporating a blend of traditional and contemporary painting styles to showcase a spectrum of artistic
techniques and expressions. Art, like life, is a myriad of colors, strokes, and textures that paint a unique
story for each observer. Within these walls, we encourage you to be the storyteller, to weave your own
narrative inspired by the brushstrokes and imagery before you. Investigate how visual art communicates
stories, emotions, and lived experiences. Explore artistic styles incorporating elements of storytelling
through painting. Instead of seeking a defined meaning, allow the artwork to stir emotions within you.
