RVA NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDE: THE FAN

BY CARSON NEWBY

With the start of fall and students shuffling between classes again, I couldn’t help but notice how lively The Fan becomes. Suddenly, my quiet walks around the neighborhood saw packed sidewalks, abundant with the newest clothing trends.

It brings me back to when I was one of those newbies to the Richmond area; I remember how hard it was to find places that made this city feel like home. But after thorough research and many weekends exploring, it’s become abundantly clear that this neighborhood, in particular, has plenty to offer. You have access to nearly everything you’ll need stretched across 85 blocks of historic, Victorian-style homes. From food to nightlife and even chic thrift shops, you’ll be amazed at just how much you can find here.

Read on for the best of what to eat, drink, see, and do in The Fan and its surrounding areas.

PS: Did we miss a must-try spot? This guide includes some of the classics and our favorites, but if there’s something you think we should add, let us know here!

What to See

Lombardy & Park Avenue Triangle

Having worked in childcare for nearly five years, I’ve developed a strange knack for discovering playgrounds. Before you even turn the corner and see this spot, you’ll notice many families with little ones strolling around. The park is surrounded by a brick wall, which is extremely helpful for deterring kiddos who tend to wander, and while the space is on the smaller side, it’s rich in activities to entertain the little ones, including a sandbox!

Institute for Contemporary Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University

After coming off I-95 from a grueling stint of rush-hour traffic, there’s always a sense of relief that rushes through me once I spot this iconic landmark on VCU’s campus. It’s hard to miss this award-winning museum at the corner of Belvidere St and Broad St.

Liven up your day with (free!) access to the art and culture through exhibitions and live performances or the community media center, where you can record your own podcast, learn how to use audio software, and collaborate with other creatives.

Scuffletown Park

Calling all green thumbs to the front — this is where I go to find peace and quiet while surrounded by lushness. Grab your favorite sweet treat from Scoop and enjoy an evening stroll in the heart of The Fan. This is a neighborhood gem that deserves to stay that way, so if you’re interested in keeping this park clean, you can follow Scuffletown Park on Facebook for ways to do just that.

Monroe Park

I’ve set a goal to go on more walks around my neighborhood. I have a deep appreciation for people-watching, and this park has become one of my favorite spots. It’s especially great because you can really capture the essence of VCU’s student culture.

At Richmond’s oldest park, there are plenty of trees and open fields, perfect for a picnic with friends. If you come by at the right time, you might even spot some vendors. As the weather starts to get cooler, my favorite thing to do here is grab a hot chocolate from a nearby café and take a seat at the center of the park.

What to Do

Rage RVA

I think it’s fair to say that most of us deal with some level of repressed anger. Personally, I’ve always envisioned myself having my own Beyoncé Lemonade moment. While that may not be considered socially acceptable, I think I’ve found a loophole: Smash automobiles, destroy electronic items, splatter paint on the wall, or book a five-dollar scream session here. Schedule a time and take part in what I consider to be the cheapest form of therapy in the city.

Rumors

Walking down W Broad St makes me feel like I should partake in street fashion photography. The people in this city just seem to know how to dress. While I can’t say I’m the most stylish person, I’ve found some great pieces at this boutique thrift store. Discover the best gently-used fashion finds; they have an assortment of designer brands if you’re looking to spruce up your style this season. Rumors always has a pulse on current trends and is a great place to visit for fashion inspiration, too.

Saturn Return

This vintage shop has a rather alternative twist: Is it Western, goth, punk, or heavy metal? In simple terms, it’s all that and more. The name Saturn Return holds a powerful astrological meaning, signifying someone breaking away from societal norms. This is a space to embrace self-expression with a dynamic collection of alternative fashion and gear.

Firehouse Theater

Where we are all welcome, where we are all seen, and where we are all inspired — that is the vision statement behind the Richmond theater staple. Originally an old fire station shut down by the city, it has been transformed into a lively hub for artists in the area. After more than 30 years, Firehouse Theater has become an integral part of the Richmond theater community.

Aquarian Bookshop

Coming from someone who got their first tarot deck from this bookshop, I’m not ashamed to say that I’m obsessed with this place. For those looking for a metaphysical experience, this is your go-to spot for crystals, apothecary items, and spiritual classes.

Where to Eat

Beauvine Burger Concept

Fun fact: This was the first burger I ever had in the city. Considering it’s been voted the best burger in the area on Uber Eats, I’m grateful this was my introduction to the RVA food scene. Their artisan burgers are mouthwateringly good, but my meal wouldn’t be complete without a side of duck-fat fries, especially with the truffle parmesan seasoning. If you somehow still have room for more after that, I beg you to try their Fruity Pebbles milkshake. You’ll never be the same.

Kuba Kuba

This is where you go when you're looking for a food coma. Cuban-style dishes paired with a bodega-like atmosphere makes the space feel uniquely familiar. If you’re new to the menu, the Coconut Risotto is a great place to start. The portions are hearty, and the service makes you feel right at home.

Scott’s Shawarma

After having a team lunch here, I was shocked that I hadn’t tried it sooner. This place makes my favorite falafels in the city, and they don’t skimp on the hummus. (Hummus lovers understand how important that is.) The portions are hefty, so I love splitting my meals to save some on lunch for the next day.

Goatocado

In the eyes of Goatocado, the goal is to create “happy food.” With a clean, contemporary look, the space mirrors the dishes — simple, clean ingredients with a flavorful twist. The menu is customizable, allowing for a unique food experience. With a focus on sustainability, you can’t help but feel the purpose behind their environmentally-conscious ingredients in every bite.

Scoop

For those who love a sweet treat, it’s only fitting that you try Yelp’s twenty-sixth ranking for best ice cream shops in the country. This spot offers a variety of rotating flavors, but the one that stays in the minds and hearts of myself and many others is the Brown Sugar Cookie Dough. I truly believe I could keep them in business even if I were their sole customer.

Barrio Taqueria + Tequila

I’ve set a new goal for myself: Try every taco here because they’re just that good. The space blends retro diner vibes with an inventive industrial theme. Eating here is my favorite way to spend a Friday night, especially when I have one of their soft-serve margaritas in hand.

BTW: Sadly, this spot announced it would be closing soon, so make sure to visit ASAP!

Pupatella

Taking a bite of this pizza is like being transported to the vibrant city of Naples, Italy. These personal-sized pies have everything you’re looking for in a Neapolitan pizza. The crust is pillowy soft, and the fresh-water Buffalo cheese is rich in flavor. But what truly shines is the very thing that defines Neapolitan pizza: those San Marzano tomatoes. Honestly, just writing about it makes me want to order one right now.

Africanne on Main

I had never heard of a food spot in the city that caters to cuisines across the diaspora and was pleasantly surprised to find this one. To all my vegans and vegetarians, you’ll have plenty of options here. When I’m looking to satisfy my cravings, this buffet-style spot is a must-visit. After learning that they make fufu, I knew I had to try it for myself. My personal favorite is pairing it with their seafood gumbo.

Garnett’s

This sweet little corner eatery gives off major cottagecore vibes. Serving a nostalgic sandwich menu, it feels like a trip to Grandma’s house. But don’t let that statement fool you — these sandwiches are classics for a reason. Keeping with old-fashioned trends, you can top off your meal with a slice of classic housemade pie. Now that the weather is cooling down, plan the perfect lunch date by renting a picnic basket from them and heading to one of the local parks in the neighborhood while enjoying a bite of homemade goodness.

Helen’s Restaurant & Bar

As someone whose favorite meal is breakfast, I can be pretty particular about where I go for it. Finding the best brunch spots in the city requires an eye for taste, atmosphere, and service. After thorough investigation, it would be criminal not to consider this iconic hole-in-the-wall diner a top contender. This Richmond classic, with nearly a century under its belt, remains unmatched.

Idle Hands Bread Company

This place specializes in everything sourdough, and from the loaves to the sweet treats, everything here is to die for. I can’t seem to make it back to my house before devouring my entire pastry. Save yourself the headache and get there early on the weekend to beat the lines — you’ll thank me later.

Blue Habanero Street Tacos & Tequila

Growing up in NOVA, I was lucky enough to be exposed to a plethora of Mexican-inspired food. So when I moved to Richmond, I worried about finding a Mexican food staple that would make this city feel like home. After trying their Birria tacos, I knew my search was over. Paying homage to Mexican folklore, the decor is striking and vibrant. Just like the interior design, the food packs a similar punch. It’s amazing how some tacos, gossiping with friends, and a couple rounds of margaritas can change the entire trajectory of an evening.

Mike’s Jazz Cafe

My family’s background goes back to the Deep South, so comfort food is very close to my heart. What makes this place noteworthy is the chef’s use of worldly flavors in these already-classic dishes. Along with its diverse interpretation of Southern cuisine, the venue offers a beautiful blend of live jazz music, too.

Main St. Dragon

Eating here feels like a team sport because when I go with friends, it’s appetizer after appetizer. The variety of authentic Asian street food brings a diverse set of flavors that remains unmatched. The Shazam! Shrimp is my personal favorite on the menu. But before you ask for the bill to close out your food marathon, try one of their signature ramens. Each broth is rich with flavor, so you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Joe’s Inn

The RVAx team fan girls over the Country Greek Salad here every summer, but that’s not the only thing going for this classic. The quaint eatery and bar has been in biz since 1952 and recently reached icon status according to the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association (VRLTA) (although, it was already an icon in our hearts, TBH). Second-generation owner Tina Kafantaris emphasizes the restaurant’s community feel and offer of “something for everyone.”

Nate’s Bagels

When it’s a perfect bagel you’re going for, Nate’s is the spot. Order one of the shops many signature sandwiches, or just go for a bagel and schmear. There’s no wrong way to enjoy Nate’s.

Who wouldn’t want to experience an award-winning happy hour? The drink selection is extensive, and the food adds the perfect finishing touch to any night out.

Social52 Kitchen & Craft Bar

I knew I was right at home after trying the Riptide Rush, and I haven’t been the same since. Their modern, industrial aesthetic gives them a unique edge, attracting a crowd that enjoys experimenting with their drinking experience. Combined with their distinctive cocktail selection, they’ve become a must-try in the city.

Live music, a pet-friendly environment, and a great atmosphere — what more could you ask for as a Richmonder? This place has a little bit of everything and is reminiscent of Nashville bar culture with its warm decor and incredibly friendly staff. Since it opened, it’s been a fantastic spot to enjoy a night out with friends while getting insight into local artists in the city.

This mainstay on Main St has been serving great food and drinks for 50+ years. Take it from one reviewer who had this to say: “Bamboozled is the name and strong drinks is their game!” Order that and then some, and enjoy this corner bar’s hole-in-the-wall charm and menu that packs a punch.
