On February 29, just as the world began to turn upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a new local artisan collective opened in The Fan — only to put everything on hold until our community could safely return to our “new normal.”

A few months later, now that we are cleared to leave our homes again, The Boho Basement has officially opened its doors at 1 N. Lombardy St, thanks to the hard work and dedication of co-owners Lindsay Cooper and Frances Butters.

“As two makers ourselves, we wanted to create an inspiring collective of the talent we kept seeing all over Richmond. A spot where artists were able to make exactly what they wanted and envisioned… where customers knew they could buy from various local creatives in one purchase,” Lindsay and Frances wrote. “When we found out that part of the old Baja Bean was available, we fell in love, and The Boho Basement was born.”

More than a dozen local artisans, upcyclers, and makers have signed on as vendors at this new eclectic boutique (you can find the full list here) selling furniture, home decor, kitchenware, office supplies, apparel, accessories, jewelry, skincare, essential oils, greeting cards, and beyond.

The Boho Basement is also an authorized Dixie Belle Paint Company retailer, meaning you can stop by to stock up on high quality paints, waxes, glazes, finishes, brushes, and more, which you can see pictured in the display above.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Dixie Belle sells chalk paints that are ideal to use when painting wood, metal, glass, ceramic, fabric, and more — aka, perfect for those looking to get into refurbishing furniture or upcycling furniture on their own, as well! (New stay-at-home hobby, anyone?)

Another of the boutique’s authorized offerings is the Stella Valle bracelet collection.

With the tagline “charm jewelry reimagined,” the owners of this company (sisters Paige and Ashley Dellavalle, two West Point graduates, veterans, and business partners) appeared on Shark Tank in 2013, receiving funding from Lori Greiner and Mark Cuban to expand their product lines.

The Boho Basement carries Stella Valle color bracelets (pictured above), birthstone bracelets, and initial bracelets, as well as a special graduation bracelet — all of which are high quality, 18k Gold and Rhodium plated brass pieces.

The inventory available at The Boho Basement is always changing, since the majority of the pieces that they carry are one-of-a-kind — so if you fall in love with something, it’s usually a good idea to claim it before it's gone!

That being said, aside from the boutique’s current inventory, many vendors also accept custom work, so be sure to reach out for more information if you find a maker whose style you love.

And last but not least: The Boho Basement also offers furniture refinishing services. You can shoot them an email for more information.
