Hey there!
I’m loving this crispy weather we’re getting this week. Over the weekend, I spent a li’l writing time at the Glen Allen Branch Library and cozied up near the fireplace over there while I worked. Did you know they have a fireplace?? Having fun really ISN’T hard when you have library card!
Speaking of book-related things, how’s this month’s book club read coming along for you? I’m about 65 percent of the way through, and it’s equal parts gripping *and* sickening. If you’re approaching the DNF point (I’ve almost been too scared to continue multiple times), don’t forget that our book club meetings are really for the social hang of it all. So, come along either way! I’ll have some Halloween treats in tow. See you then?

The Henrico Werewolf: We’ve recently been getting our chills and thrills from Fife Paranormal, a father and son paranormal team from Virginia that investigates haunted locations. Their coverage of the Henrico Werewolf, in partic, is what’s keeping us up at night this week. Legend has it the creature has been spotted near The Spring Recreation Center or heard howling at night by Henrico residents. And beware, it’s been known to chase its victims, too.

SOCIAL NEWS
It’s Garden Glow szn again: One of our very favorite events of the year kicks off again this Wednesday, October 16. This season, Maymont’s Garden Glow will feature new light sculptures, fire pits and glow furniture, the Glow Bar, the Big Bright Mega Light board, new Glow Swings (!!!), and dozens of food trucks on site. Bring all your favorite people, and enjoy 90 minutes (at least) of radiance on any given evening, now through November 10. (Maymont)
A core way to celebrate fall: Apples & Ales happens this Sunday, October 20. Enjoy a late afternoon of live music, food and drinks from Garden Grove Brewing & Urban Winery, S&N Juice Fountain, Bikini Panini, and OMG OCPs. Make a picnic of it and bring a blanket or camping chairs to relax on while you enjoy your grub, before or after you stroll the gorg gardens and grounds. (Agecroft Hall & Gardens)
Spooky, scary skeletons send shivers down your spine: Head to Scarytown on Saturday, October 26, to start your Halloween celebrations ASAP. The Byrd Theatre kicks things off with a showing of The Exorcist at 11:45 am, trick-or-treating happens at participating shops from 12 to 2 pm, Dogma hosts a pet costume contest at 1:30 pm, and a zombie walk starting back at The Byrd at 2:30 rounds things out for the afternoon. I want to ride my bicycle: Three new bike lanes are coming to the downtown area early next year. With plans to complete construction by February 2025, the City of Richmond announced the project with the intent to improve safety for and accessibility to the neighborhood. Starting at the end of the month, you’ll see construction crews getting to work on the lanes on 2nd St from Spring St to Byrd St, on Byrd St from 2nd to 3rd St, and on 3rd St from Byrd St to Franklin St. (WRIC)
Henrico is wheeling: GRTC is adding eight new bus stops along Henrico County’s W Broad St corridor from Willow Lawn to Parham Rd. This update will include high-quality boarding stations, too, so bus riders have safe spots to wait for their pick-ups. Nearly 70 folks attended a community open house earlier this month to hear about the plans and chime in with questions or concerns. (Henrico Citizen)
Add this coffee spot to your rotation: Qahwah House will open in Virginia Book Co.’s former digs near Monroe Park. Per the franchisee behind the spot, Mohammed Alsaidi, Qahwah House will be a high-end cafe that stays open later and for longer hours than others like it in the area; plan to pop by for a caffeine fix anytime between 7 am and midnight, as soon as things are up and running in the next month or so.
