Frida: Beyond the Myth

Frida: Beyond the Myth

Twentieth-century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo continues to fascinate us with her arresting gaze, signature fashion, and trailblazing legacy. At the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, this singular artist and her extraordinary works are the focus of Frida: Beyond the Myth.

The exhibition showcases many of the artist’s most important paintings and drawings from the beginning of her career in 1926 until her death in 1954. More than 60 works of art in a variety of media, many rarely seen outside of Mexico, include self-portraits, still lifes, and compositions from her imagination. Also on view are photographs of Kahlo taken by many of those closest to her, including internationally renowned photographers Lola Álvarez Bravo, Imogen Cunningham, Julien Levy, Dora Maar, and Nickolas Muray.

Kahlo began painting during her recovery from a traumatic bus accident that she barely survived and that forever changed her life. This exhibition closely examines the inimitable style and complexity of Kahlo’s paintings. Her life was a seemingly open book but was also paradoxically enigmatic, as she depicted life-altering events with unflinching truth yet masterfully employed symbolism and continually reinvented herself in iconic self-portraits. Her jewel-like paintings are among the most beautiful, memorable, and haunting images of the 20th century.

This presentation of paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs offers a rare opportunity to explore the art of Frida Kahlo, whose strength, vulnerability, and sensuality still compel us today. Discover how she crafted her image to reflect her Mexican pride, express gender fluidity, and adorn her injured body. Learn how Kahlo painted to transcend pain and physical disability. And celebrate how she ultimately triumphed to achieve her own immortality, becoming a national treasure in her native Mexico and receiving posthumous acclaim around the world.

Frida: Beyond the Myth is co-curated by Dr. Agustín Arteaga, the Eugene McDermott Director, and Sue Canterbury, the Pauline Gill Sullivan Curator of American Art, at the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition is organized for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by exhibition curator Dr. Sarah G. Powers.

Interpretive text and audio tours in both English and Spanish and rarely seen film footage are part of the visitor experience at VMFA, the exhibition’s only East Coast venue and one of only two venues nationwide.

Live Music at Brambly Park

Don’t miss the frontman of Daton Dash in a solo performance at Brambly Park. (12-4 pm)

Trace Nixon - Singer/Songwriter & Guitarist of Gone Country (4 - 7 pm)

Trace Nixon is the driving force behind Richmond’s own neotraditional country band, Gone Country. A passionate singer-songwriter and guitarist, Trace’s musical journey is rooted in his deep respect for classic country, and his determination to honor the genre’s rich traditions.

Forming the band in December 2022 with fellow musician John Holden, Trace’s career traces back to the early 2000s, when mainstream country was veering away from its classic roots. With his love for steel guitars and fiddles, Trace has made it his mission to return to the genre’s soul, combating the rise of auto-tuned vocals and snap beats with a sound that speaks to true country authenticity.

His track, "This One’s for Alan," exemplifies the heartfelt storytelling and emotional depth that Trace’s music carries. Whether performing solo or with Gone Country, Trace Nixon’s voice and guitar work evoke the spirit of country music’s finest, delivering a fresh yet familiar sound that resonates with fans of traditional and neotraditional country alike.

Corey Axt - Lead Vocalist & Songwriter of Faceship (7 - 10 pm)

Corey Axt is the creative force behind Faceship, an ethereal and captivating band that blends elements of indie, alt-rock, and ambient music. As the lead vocalist and primary songwriter, Corey’s music reflects his ability to craft hauntingly beautiful soundscapes and emotionally charged lyrics.

The song "F Sharp Your Miner" serves as a perfect example of Corey’s long-term musical vision, written over a decade ago and recorded as the first track during the band’s studio sessions in 2019. This track, with its layered atmosphere and introspective tones, is a powerful representation of Faceship’s unique style: a blend of sadness and peace, urgency, and serenity, all wrapped in a mesmerizing sonic experience.

Corey’s songwriting and vocal performances have always captured the raw energy of his live shows, and his collaboration with the band and producer Zach Fichter has brought the full force of that energy into the studio, making their music feel alive with every listen. Corey’s ability to evoke emotion and provoke thought through his music makes Faceship’s sound resonate with listeners long after the last note fades.
