Hey there!

For some of you, this week marks roughly one month of working from home. By now you may have somewhat, or fully, adjusted to the new normal and we hope things feel a little easier these days. While the current stay at home order is through June 10, the statewide closure of certain non-essential businesses was only in place til April 23, but as of 2pm today that has been extended to May 8. We are sending out our thoughts to all our friends and partners being impacted.

For essential employees who continue to work, we really can’t say thank you enough. We don’t want to think about what things would be like if not for you. We’ve got a special giveaway so keep scrolling!

This week is all about baked goods, homemade cocktails, more apartments slated for Richmond, and a perk for everyone who hates mosquitoes (so, everyone). Onward…

SOCIAL NEWS

You can substitute baking for cocktails because flour is sold out everywhere and cocktails make for a more interesting family Zoom call!  By now you've probably experienced the onslaught of baked goods on all your social feeds — from homemade bread to complicated cakes to healthy cookies and beyond, it seems like everyone turned to baking with all this extra time on their hands.  Well, RVA Happy Hours had another idea: homemade cocktails.  They DMd some local spots and got the recipes to some of their most highly-rated cocktails so now you can sip on favorites like the Swipe Right from En Su Boca or the Gin Blossom from Beauvine, all from the comfort of your couch. Ina Garten has the right idea. If DIY is not for you, no sweat, pick-up the phone and order a cocktail for takeout. Just make sure you put the beverage in the trunk or transport it out of reach of the driver.

Continuing on that note, in true Richmond-in-the-spring fashion, Blue Bee Cider rolled out a frosé party pack (this is not a drill). For $30 you can savor two 10 oz frosés, 4oz of Caromont Farm chevre cheese, and water crackers to share, available for pickup or delivery. Frosé is also sold separately for $9 each.

If you prefer baking
, fellow RVAx member, Liz Thomson, rounded up a few healthy cookie recipes so you can get in some baking while also watching your sugar, butter, and oil intake. Personally, I’ve bookmarked her double chocolate avocado cookies which she claims are so rich and fudgy they’ll satisfy any chocolate craving! The oatmeal chocolate chip cookies sound like a real treat and she’s even got a vegan recipe for snickerdoodles. These carrot cake bars look heavenly too. Happy baking!

Not local, but newsworthy: Trader Joes is opening a second Richmond location near Stony Point Fashion Park. (Richmond BizSense)

Additional plans emerged for the development next to Hardywood, including the plan for new neighbors, roughly 200 of them, according to Mike Platania over at Richmond BizSense.  This would be the first apartment community on Ownby Lane which also hosts Castleburg Brewery, Main Line Brewery, and Cirrus Vodka, in addition to Hardywood. The developer, Spy Rock Real Estate Group, is the same team behind a few well-known apartment communities in the area including The Preserve at Scott’s Addition, Symbol in Scott’s Addition, South Bank Apartments in Manchester, and Midtown Apartments in the Fan and Museum Districts.

Along Broad Street, more apartments continue to rise.  Currently under construction is The Summit at Scott’s Addition with 160+ units, across from Blanchards on Broad Street, from the folks at SNP Properties.  They currently own and manage The Mezzo Lofts at City Center, The Penny at Jackson Ward, City Center RVA, and Vida East in Church Hill.  Just down the street, next to The Hofheimer Building, over 70 units are planned for development from the team behind Quirk Hotel.  Mike Platatnia at Richmond BizSense has the full story here.

Have you seen the cheese boards made by Emmie Lewis @rvacheesegirl?  They seem like the perfect move for an afternoon picnic, on the weekend with some wine, or to send to a friend for a birthday, especially during the quarantine times.  Adding this to my to-do list.

Lastly, The Veil Brewing found themselves in some hot water this week when they failed to take responsible precautions ahead of a hyped-up beer release. @dontdrinkbeers created quite the visual while r/rva weighed in with nearly 100 comments. You can check out the brewery’s explanation/apology here.

‘RONA RESOURCES

Local Richmonder and RN, Clare Shanley, volunteered for a COVID response team and was assigned to one of the busiest hospitals in NYC. She’s posting updates almost daily and it’s so interesting to see “firsthand” how things are going. You can catch up on her journey here and follow along @cdexshanley.

Love in the time of coronavirus exists and one RVAx member has a ring to prove it! While watching season 1 of The Bachelor, Merritt H. received a proposal of her own. It was an average Tuesday night during #quarantinetimes, and certainly not the initial game plan (a sunset cruise in Lisbon), but it was special nonetheless and a small reminder that good things are still happening daily! Congrats, Merritt!
