Ed 110: Soul Food, CBD Shop, A New Brewery
This edition of the Weekly Insider is proudly brought to you by Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop.
Hey there, Alicia here.
I’ll kick off with the same messaging and resources we’ve been sharing for the last month now:
Keep supporting our Black community.
Keep being careful as we navigate COVID-19.
Keep celebrating Pride month while social distancing.
These are strange times, y’all. And the only way we’re going to get through them is together.
With that in mind, let’s talk about the latest social news in our city…
THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
A new taco spot just opened on Tuesday in Church Hill. Or is it Union Hill? Either way, the highly anticipated Kahlo’s Taqueria & Bar finally made its debut with a menu of more than a dozen different kinds of tacos, as well as burritos, fajitas, seafood specials, and plenty of margaritas to choose from. All made fresh daily. Is anyone else’s mouth watering? Just me?
From food truck to brick and mortar restaurant — during a pandemic? Yep, Daily Menu owner Lance Nelson made that magic happen. Richmond BizSense reported that this Southern soul food spot has moved from its mobile kitchen in Northside to new digs in Shockoe Bottom, serving up crispy chicken sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, seafood, and more.
Moseley’s first brewery is on its way. That’s in Chesterfield County, if you’re trying to mentally place it on a map. Go-to development reporter Mike Platania wrote that Hidden Wit Brewing Co. construction crews are expected to begin work on the 10,000 sq. ft. brewery, mentioning that there will also be an additional 6,000 sq. ft. of outdoor space. The brewery’s owners say we can look forward to high-end small plates and craft beer brewed in their 20-barrel brewing system as early as spring 2021.
Scott’s Addition is getting a new CBD and agriculture shop. According to RVA Magazine, Happy Trees Agricultural Supply will be a one-stop shop for high quality CBD, sustainable farming supplies, and advice and consultation from knowledgeable sources on both of those topics in a community-driven setting. Owners Josiah Ickes and Chris Haynie have prioritized keeping their CBD supply chain as Virginia-based as possible, and they hope to open their storefront this summer.
Slowly but surely, beloved local attractions are reopening. The Valentine announced that it plans on reopening on June 30 — followed by the VMFA, which plans to reopen to members on July 1 and to the public on July 4. The VMFA announcement mentioned that the cafe will be offering "grab and go” service, which we’re hoping includes beer and wine so we can get back to the Friday Art & Wine happy hours we know and love.
And the Church Hill food tour is back! River City Food Tours will re-launch this fan-favorite tour this Saturday, June 27 with a few key changes in place to keep things safe for all involved. If you’re more comfortable socially isolating, you can also check out their new self-guided downtown mural tour for a fun outdoor activity on your own!
HAPPENINGS
Shop all of your favorite local Richmond businesses, all in one (virtual) place. Through June 25 only, the Pop Up RVA virtual market is live, selling clothing and accessories, wellness items and skincare, home decor, specialty foods, outdoor recreation products, DIY kits, kids items, gifts, and more from vendors all over the city.
All the items you select will be added to one cart (no separate check-outs!), and 3% of all orders placed will be donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Learn more about the market’s charitable donations here.

Member Perks
Amory Seafood Co
Typically, this seafood company in Hampton, VA does commercial fishing and distribution to restaurants — but due to COVID-19, they’ve shifted to curbside seafood sales (at wholesale prices!) to the general public to keep their fisherman working. You can check out the menu and price list here.
Richmonder Martina James Nalley accepts orders for pick-up from Amory Seafood Co by text each week until Friday at 3 pm. She travels to Hampton to pick up the orders from the dock on Saturday mornings, then brings the orders to a pickup location in RVA and one in Midlothian on Saturday afternoons. (Except July 4 weekend — pick ups will take place on Thursday that week to accommodate the holiday, so orders will need to be in by Wednesday, July 1 at 3 pm).
And, bonus: If you place an order of $50 or more by July 1, you’ll be entered to win a $50 credit for a future order!
You can text (540) 809-7505 to place your order — or if you aren’t ready to order but would like to receive updates, you can text RVAseafood to 484848 to get a message each Monday with weekly specials and up-to-date pricing.
Members can use code RVAx when texting their order to waive the usual $5 delivery fee.
