Hey there, Alicia here.

It seems crazy that we’ve been navigating COVID-19 in Richmond for more than four months at this point. Yet somehow, it’s July already.

Usually, family vacations and annual city-wide events would mark the passage of time as the summer flew by, but the pandemic has unfortunately thrown some of those plans out the window. (Don’t worry, we’re keeping track of which big Richmond events have been rescheduled, postponed, and are still expected to go on; you can find it all in one place here.)

But just because this summer looks a bit different doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy it!

We can still get outside to hike and bike around all our gorgeous region. We can order frozen treats (even boozy ones!) for pick-up to cool off. Those who feel comfortable can enjoy socially distanced drinks and meals on some of the city’s best patios. Those who don’t can opt for pick-up or delivery, then head out for a picnic.

It’s a weird time for us all, yes. But we can find ways to make it better while staying safe and keeping others safe.

Now, on to this week’s social news…

SOCIAL NEWS

Turning The Diamond into a drive-in — sort of. The Richmond Flying Squirrels just announced that they’ll be hosting a new twice-a-week “Movies In The Outfield” event series at The Diamond on Thursdays and Saturdays. This socially distanced movie-going experience will offer seating on the field itself in either 10’x10’ spaces (for up to 4 people) or 10’x20’ spaces (for up to 8 people), starting this Thursday, July 9 with a showing of “Field of Dreams” at 7:05 pm and this Saturday, July 11 showing “The Incredibles” at 6:05 pm. Guests should plan to bring blankets and pillows; chairs won’t be permitted. And yes, concessions will be open!

A new roasting lab opened its doors in Scott’s Addition this weekend. After a year of building their roasting lab from the ground up, Recluse Roasting Project opened at 1310 Altamont Ave in a tucked-away building shared with Wax Moon Records this past Saturday , Richmond Magazine reported. You can order hot or iced coffee and tea, cardamom buns, or either of the two monthly slush options (this month’s are a sweetened oat milk latte slush and cascara slush with lime shrub) online for curbside pick-up to give this new spot a try. They’re currently open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Therapy is coming to Shockoe Slip. Richmond BizSense reported that Therapy, a new restaurant and bar, will open in the 7,000 sq. ft. space formerly occupied by Cha Cha’s Southwest Kitchen & Bar at 1419 E Cary St. You can expect an “upscale sports bar that also has a nightlife side to it,” with a focus on great burgers. Mike Platania reported that Therapy is being opened by Neil Kaisani, whose father Tony Kaisani owned Tony’s Barbecue downtown for 30 years before it closed in 2013. The unique name of the spot, Therapy, is a reference to Neil’s background in medicine, as he’s a med student currently finishing up clinical trials at Windsor University.

A beloved Scott’s Addition beer garden and production brewery just added an in-house food option and a wine and cider program. After six years, the folks at Ardent Craft Ales announced that they’ve added a full food menu including 10 different sandwiches (yes, there are gluten-free and vegetarian options), salads, and sides. They’ve also expanded to offer Blue Bee Cider as well as both red and white wine options for the non-beer drinkers who choose to visit their space. But don’t worry, their huge beer selection isn’t going anywhere!

Get ready to smash things in Forest Hill. Rage RVA, also known as the Richmond Smash room, announced that they’ll be moving operations from their Hospital Street location to a new spot at the corner of Forest Hill Ave and Westover Hills Blvd. So, if you want to break dishes or smash a car in the next month, you’ll need to have a little patience — their new space is expected to open in early August, while their original spot’s last day will be today (Wednesday, July 8). But all that waiting should just make you even more ready to break things, right?

There’s a new park in Scott’s Addition. We’ve all been going a bit stir crazy, so we’ve been extra aware when new outdoor spaces pop up for extra getting-the-heck-out-of-the-house opportunities. So, we were excited to learn that there’s a new park in Scott’s Addition at the corner of Moore St and Roseneath Rd. This community green space offers ample shade as well as picnic tables and benches, made possible by the folks over at Richmond Community ToolBank.

Speaking of new spaces, a bridge deck may soon reconnect Jackson Ward. Richmond BizSense reported that the Richmond 300 draft plan suggests a way to connect the two halves of this neighborhood that have been divided by the interstate for decades.

HAPPENINGS

Outdoor yoga flows followed by gluten-free booze options? We’re in. Courthouse Creek Cider offers not one but two opportunities for yogis to bend for their bevs (all-natural hard cider, gluten-free beer, or cider cocktails) each weekend at their farm in Maidens, VA.

On Fridays, you can join the Happy, Happy Hour yoga practice led by Lunge Yoga at 6:30 pm for $15/person. And on Sundays, come for Yoga & Brunch In The Orchard at 10 am led by Yoga In RVA for $10/person.

In both cases, be sure to bring your own mat or towel as well as a mask (you can take your mask off once you’re on your mat), and be prepared to set up at least 10 ft. from each of your fellow yogis!

Weekly Giveaway

Cool Canines PCS

Skip the processed dog treats from big-box stores and opt for a locally made, all natural option instead with Cool Canines PCS, a local black-owned business that serves the community by providing nurturing, first-class, pet care and baking delectable dog treats.

These homemade treats are made with limited, recognizable ingredients in flavors that pups love — and without any by-product meat meals, preservatives, artificial flavors, chemicals, or colors.

This week, we’re giving away three 6 oz. bags of Peanut Butter Poppers to one lucky winner.

TO ENTER: Tell me your favorite dog breed(s)! I know, they’re all perfect in their own ways, but we’ve all got a secret soft spot for one breed or another. Mine’s a Great Pyrenees, like our pup Luna.

Last week: Congratulations to Elisabeth K. for being our giveaway winner of the week!  We hope you have a great time getting your nails done at Scorpio Rising.
