Ed 121: Art Garage, Disc Golf, Baked Goods For Good
Hey there, Alicia here!
In case you missed it, last week we published The Official Newcomers’ Guide to Richmond — and the response has been amazing!
Thank you so much to everyone who voted for the businesses and services we listed here, and to everyone who has shared this resource since it went live last week. We hope it continues to be a valuable guide for those new to our fantastic city.
Now, on to this week’s social news:
Did you hear about the pod-style concert coming to Maymont this weekend? Or the new art garage opening soon in Northside? What about the awards that Garden Grove and Stone Brewing just won, or the insanely cool new place now offering Disc Golf Thursdays?
No? Well, allow me to tell you all about all of the above!
THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
Richmond Art Garage is coming soon to Brookland Park Boulevard in Northside, and they have perhaps the best Instagram bio of all time. It reads: “Who the hell knows anymore? New art, some sort. Opening fall 2020. Richmond, VA.” If that’s not a straightforward example of how we’re all feeling in 2020, I don’t know what is.
Brookland Park RVA elaborated a bit, explaining that Richmond Art Garage will be opened by Zachary Reid at 205 W Brookland Park Blvd. They wrote: “Reid is a former Richmond Times-Dispatch journalist and long-time Northside resident turned artist, who wanted to create a gallery and studio space to help artists of all skill levels find new audiences and establish their careers. The studio will start in the former service station next door to the infamous American National Bank Building, and will evolve into a future container art studio with expanded gallery and studio spaces. The gallery opens on October 1 and will feature work by RVA artist Kevin Sabo in a show titled ‘small works.’ Future shows this fall will include ‘Racial Awakening,’ ‘Body Positive/Women in Art,’ and a friends/family mixed media exhibit.”
The West End of Richmond Fall Flea Market will return this weekend. There will be 75 outdoor vendors selling antiques, collectibles, toys, jewelry, furniture, arts and crafts, home decor, clothes, and more, all from the parking lot outside of Odd Balls Collectibles & Claire's Antiques at 7580 W Broad St this Saturday from 8 am - 3 pm. As a bonus, for those who are ready for #SpookySeason already, The Ghostbusters of Virginia will be at the flea market — and you can get free pictures taken with the team, and see real props from the Ghostbuster films! Nothing is noted on their Facebook event about COVID-19 protocols, but it’s assumed that you should follow Virginia’s Phase 3 restrictions (wear face coverings when outside the home, keep 6 ft. of distance between yourself and others, and frequently wash / sanitize your hands).
Jamaica House has a new home! This fast-casual restaurant has been serving up authentic Jamaican fare from their location near VCU’s Monroe Park Campus for nearly 20 years, but they just moved to a new spot at 416 W Broad St with significantly more space. RVA Hub reported that Jamaica House now has more seating and an expanded kitchen, so they hope to add some customer favorites from Carena’s Jamaican Grille and try a few new traditional dishes. Am I the only one whose mouth is watering?
Disc Golf Thursdays, anyone? You can now join The Diamond on Thursdays for Diamond Disc Golf presented by Woodfin! Time slots can be reserved each week between 6:30 - 8:30 pm for $10/person, and the 9-hole course starts behind The Diamond's outfield off Hermitage Road. They will have sanitized discs available for you to use, or you can bring your own — and you can submit your scorecard after your round for a chance to win prizes! The player with the best score each week will be presented with a Flying Squirrels Swag Bag.
Two Richmond breweries brought home the gold at the 9th annual Craft Beer Cup awards. The Virginia Brewers Guild gave out awards in 20 categories to breweries across the commonwealth, and the only two Richmond-area breweries to earn first-place awards were Garden Grove Brewing (in the Strong Ale category, for their Fergus Wee Heavy) and Stone Brewing (in the IPA category, for their Stone IPA). Be sure to add both of these beers to your #RVABeer bucket list!
A socially distanced, pod-style concert is coming to Maymont this weekend. Yacht rock band Three Sheets To The Wind will serenade Richmonders this Friday, September 11 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm with covers of 1970s and 80s classics — all enjoyed from either 10’x10’ pods ($100; hold up to 4 people) or 10’x20’ pods ($200; hold up to 8 people) at the Maymont Historic Estate Entrance. Be sure to reserve your pod sooner than later, as they’re likely to sell out!
Speaking of music: The Richmond Symphony is back! They will be bringing you the best in classical music and the freedom to experience it however you want: socially-distanced in-person concerts, or online livestreams to watch from home. See the fall lineup and buy tickets here; as music director Valentina Peleggi put it, “Our 2020-21 season is an inspired tribute to Richmond’s spirit of resilience, hope, and connection as we navigate these unprecedented times.”
And it’s time to clean up the James River! Join the James River Advisory Council in its 21st year of cleaning up the James River and its shorelines at the 2020 James River Regional Cleanup this Saturday, September 12 from 9 am - 1 pm. Due to COVID19 and limited capacity at each site, volunteers must register, which you can do here.
