Hey there! Alicia here 👋

I hope this edition of the Weekly Insider finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy, even if you happen to be physically distanced as we head into the holiday season.

In case you missed it, Governor Northam announced new statewide measures to contain the coronavirus, which took effect earlier this week. You can find all the need-to-know details about these new restrictions in our free guide to Navigating COVID-19 in Richmond.

Meanwhile, we’re only a little more than a week away from Thanksgiving! If the thought of cooking a meal sounds stressful to you, you’re not alone. Luckily, we rounded up a list of local businesses that are offering Thanksgiving catering for take-out this year, as well as two fan-favorite restaurants accepting dine-in reservations. Put on those pants with the elastic waistband and get ready to gobble ‘til you wobble.

And if you’re looking for fun ways to get into the spirit of the season, no worries — our Event Calendar has you covered.

Now, let’s talk about this week’s must-know social news, from the new knife-throwing spot coming to Scott’s Addition to where you’ll be able to find festive holiday villages around the city over the next month and so much more.

SOCIAL NEWS

Looking for a way to get your 2020 frustrations out? Go throw some knives! Mike Platania at Richmond BizSense reported that Richmond couple Tamera and Dan Pegg, co-owners of The Virginia Axe Company in Goochland County, are bringing the blade-throwing fun to Scott’s Addition with a new concept called Shield and Sheath Hatchet House. Here’s the twist: While Shield and Sheath will offer axe throwing, it will be more focused on knife throwing. Unlike axe throwing (during which you’d throw one axe at one large target), knife throwing participants will throw three knives per turn at smaller targets.

Located at 1511 Altamont Ave (across from Moore St. Cafe), the venue will be home to 18 lanes and a kitchen serving traditional bar food, with a focus on pizza. Not sounding adventurous enough yet? Add in some booze — they plan to offer local beer and wine to participants and spectators alike. You can keep an eye out for this sharp new spot in spring 2021.

Spread holiday cheer, support Richmond’s small business and artist community, and find gifts for everyone on your list at this year’s brand new Holiday Villages. Every Saturday this holiday season, The Richmond Night Market will host five mini open-air, holiday-themed markets featuring local vendors, art, food, music, and the best of Richmond culture.

*UPDATE!* In the time since we published the Weekly Insider, The Richmond Night Market has announced that the holiday villages will now be a virtual market experience, so you’ll be able to shop and enjoy the festivities from the comfort and safety of your own home.

Speaking of holiday spirit, Miracle on Cary Street returns TODAY! The Jasper’s annual celebration will be to-go only this year, but I promise, that won’t make it any less magical. In addition to being able to purchase festive holiday libations along with rotating food options, the folks at The Jasper are expanding their hot apple cider stand hours to Wednesday through Sunday (4 - 8 pm) so you can walk up and take a peek at their holiday decorations, then grab a warm drink, some snacks, and/or some bottled cocktails to go. Find the full menu here.

They will also have a holiday shop set up next door at Carytown Cupcakes with all the Miracle glassware and merch you could possibly need to stuff the stockings of your loved ones this year.

Prefer the convenience of shopping online, but still want to support local? Check out this guide from our friends at Venture Richmond for 15 Downtown Richmond Stores You Can Shop Online.

And I’m wheel-y excited about this announcement. BASKET & BIKE and RVA on Wheels have teamed up to provide Richmond with a variety of tour experiences and rentals on wheels (including tours on comfortable Priority bicycles with BASKET & BIKE, or on e-bike, Segway, trolley, or gem car tours with RVA on Wheels). In addition to serving as a tour meeting spot, the partners’ newly-shared Shockoe Slip location at 1301 E Cary St will now serve as Richmond’s go-to place to test and purchase new commuter or electric bikes, along with all the gear needed to outfit those bikes in style.

And while all of these tour options sound like fun ways to spend time with friends safely out in the fresh air, I’m most intrigued by BASKET & BIKE’s Signature Ride option. a leisurely, 14-mile, guided bicycle tour along the Virginia Capital Trail ending with a glass of wine and a picnic at Upper Shirley Vineyards. Work For Your Wine, am I right?

Art lovers, fear not: Craft + Design is going online, beginning this Friday. In case you’re not familiar, Craft + Design is an annual museum-quality show hosted by the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, with a reputation for showcasing the finest in contemporary crafts. For the safety of all involved, the VisArts events team postponed the in-person Craft + Design show until June 4 - 6, 2021 at Main Street Station. However, VisArts will still host Craft + Design Online, a virtual event, November 20 - 29 of this year!

True to the event’s 56-year history, Craft + Design Online will kick off the holiday shopping season with the work of over 120 artists from 25 states, including 40 artists who are brand new to Craft + Design. Suggested donation for general online shoppers is $10, or you can get a $30 ticket here for access to both the Virtual Patrons’ Preview Party (this Friday, November 20, 6 - 9 pm) AND the Online Rise + Shine Brunch (Saturday, November 21, 9:30 - 11 am) as well.

Something new is hatching in Southside. Hatch Kitchen RVA, the city’s new culinary incubator and commissary kitchen, will begin hosting Sunday pop-ups starting this Sunday, November 29 from 5 - 9 pm. First up in this tasty event series is Buttermilk and Honey, a fried chicken concept by Chef Mike Lindsey, who was recognized as the creator of the Best Chicken Sandwich in Restaurant Hospitality’s Best Sandwiches in America 2020. This Sunday’s pop-up menu features 3 different chicken sandwiches, buttermilk and honey chicken tenders, pimento mac and cheese, ranch slaw, collard greens, and banana pudding. Place your pre-order here.

HAPPENINGS

This weekend, shop hundreds of vintage and locally made items from incredibly talented artisans all over Virginia. Our friends at The Boho Basement are hosting their first annual Holiday Showcase this Saturday, November 21 from 10 am - 6 pm and Sunday, November 22 from 12 - 5 pm.

2020 has made shopping small and local more crucial than ever, and when you shop small at The Boho Basement you support at least TWO different small businesses with every purchase (meaning both TBB and the artists they host)!

In addition to their usual collection of local makers, this weekend’s showcase will also feature guest pop-ups from Moll's Balls, Purpose Design Co., and Amanda Rose Gifts & Decor.

Weekly Giveaway

Shyndigz

You may know Shyndigz for their massive, mouthwatering cakes. But while this spot in The Fan may be one of Richmond’s top dessert destinations, their offerings go well beyond sweet treats!

One of our favorite not-so-sweet offerings from Shyndigz actually comes with savory snacks and a gift, all in one.

Their Fancy Pants Charcuterie Board comes with the wooden board itself, which has RVA hand-stamped upon it — as well as strawberries, grapes, Firehook crackers, spicy olives, Maille mustard, bread and butter pickles, black currant jam, Jarlsberg swiss, manchego, gouda, padrano, prosciutto, shooters, and Cheshire pork.

We’re giving away one of these drool-worthy spreads to one lucky RVAx member, just in time to enjoy over the Thanksgiving holiday.

To enter to win: Tell me your favorite type of cheese! I’m a sucker for a soft, creamy brie but I also can’t resist a tangy chevre. Oh, who am I kidding? I’ve yet to meet a cheese I don’t like!

Last week: Congratulations to Brianna M. for winning last week’s Väsen Brewing Company giveaway!
