Happy February!

As you probs heard, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, and I’m here for it, because Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k is ten(ish) weeks away, and I’m going to need some warm weather for all this training we’re about to get into.

Have you registered for your spot, BTW? And are you going to join the YMCA 10k Training Team with me, or what?! Training starts Saturday, and you get lots of perks *in addition* to the training itself.

So? See you this weekend?

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including where to get a vegan cheesesteak, who collab’d with RVA Dukes on a German lager, a Church Hill spot to watch, and more.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Jane Cooper Johnson: She’s the inspiration behind the new sculpture at the corner of Libbie and Patterson avenues, Strides. Reported CBS6 News after the statue’s recent unveiling, “Strides was designed to inspire viewers to consider the weight of mounting pressures that Jane Cooper Johnson must have felt when, in 1961 after a three-year legal case and a US District Court Order to desegregate, she became the first African American student at Westhampton at just 12 years old.”

SOCIAL NEWS

Is this delulu?: Point 2 recently named Richmond one of the worst cities for Gen Z-ers to buy a home. According to the real estate software company, the River City ranks 91 of 100 when it comes to homeownership likelihood for the generation born between 1997 and 2012. Citing the income levels and market competitiveness (and other factors), homeownership is just *not* giving, says the org. (CBS6 News)

An ex-squid-sit development: Yellow Umbrella Provisions is coming to Libbie Mill! The specialty grocery store and community of food lovers has plans to open its third location this spring (having already announced its plans to open a second location in Scott’s Addition this summer). You can expect lots of the same deliciousness offered at the orig location on Patterson Ave, including prepared foods, baked goods, pantry staples, charcuterie, wine, beer, fresh seafood and meat, and hot lunch options (like house-made soups and made-to-order paninis). (Instagram)

J! M! U wish you had a Duke lag(er): Väsen Brewing Company celebrated the end of Dry January with a collab beer release with JMU Alumni Association’s Richmond Chapter, RVA Dukes. The brewery describes Maddy Light as “a German light lager with optimum drinkability and a perfect companion for any social gathering be it a reunion, tailgate, or casual backyard party. It is a crisp, thirst-quenching German lager that finds an elegant balance between a noble hop character and its light malt backbone. These contribute notes of crackery grain, honey and floral, citrusy hops.” Head over for a sip or two ASAP — there’s limited stock! (Instagram)

Because it’s her business: Social media personality Tabitha Brown is on a book tour and made a stop in Richmond earlier this week. And when she did, she was looking for some good eats — so she requested the hook-up from Philly Vegan. Unsurprisingly, Tabitha loved every bite. The family-owned-and-operated spot posted a vid of the actress’s reaction to tasting the Supreme Cheesesteak (fried onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and plant-based meat loaded into a toasted on the inside, soft on the outside hoagie bun, then smothered in their authentic cheese (awesome) sauce). Her official review?: “It’s very good!” (Instagram)

Her colors are pink and pink: Brittanny Anderson — owner of Metzger Bar & Butchery, Brenner Pass, and Black Lodge — has another idea in the works. The (top) chef posted a teaser for her new spot, Pink Room, which seems to feature an ~extremely cute~ vibe. Keep an eye on social media for more — the space is expected to open in Church Hill this spring. (Instagram)
