Hi!

With these 70-degree temps coming in hot — er, well, *pleasant* — this week, we’ve been daydreaming about all things alfresco. Which, but of course, includes sipping, snacking, and sun-soaking at Brambly Park. The whimsy sprinkled throughout the two-acre urban winery will have you feeling like you’re in a storybook from the get-go. Round up your crew, enjoy a glass of the spot’s very own wine (Winter Rosé for us, please!), and play a few rounds of bocci or cornhole before you chow down on some mouth-watering Italian fare from the full-service kitchen.

And if you REALLY want to up the spring-is-coming ante, enter here to win a yurt experience! We’re teaming up with Brambly Park to give away a two-hour rental, featuring wine and an antipasti platter, for you and seven friends! Send us a 🐰emoji, and you’re in the running. RABBIT RABBIT!

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including who serves shots from mini airplanes, where to get animal crackers with an Indian twist, a hot tip for Kia and Hyundai owners, and more.

SOCIAL NEWS

Love to see it: Southern Living named Birdie’s the best new restaurant in Virginia! Citing the cafe/oyster bar/wine cellar’s many hats, the pub wrote, “It does all of it well, and in an inviting space that makes you want to hang out all day long, whether it’s with a book and a latte or over lobster rolls with friends.” And echoing Richmond Times-Dispatch once upon a time, Southern Living also noted, “it’s a bright spot in the city’s Arts District, which is still rebounding after the pandemic.” We have to join the chorus (obvs) — snag a tray of Minnie Pearl, Victory Point, Big Island, Peach Tree, Wavelength, or Malpeque mollusks to start. (Southern Living)

This is your captain speaking: If you’re like us and never not looking for somewhere to get chips, salsa, and margs, we’ve got another spot. Tito’s Taqueria & Bar just opened near VCU and has chips, salsa, margs, AND MUCH MORE. The extensive menu includes nearly 20 street tacos (on handmade corn or flour tortillas) and a line-up of tequila flights — served in mini airplanes. Have we convinced you of your dinner plans, yet? (Instagram)

The star of our week: Kindred Spirit had a soft opening for its satellite location in the former Castleburg Brewery spot, and it’s hosting its grand opening this Thursday, March 13. Here’s just some of what our friends over there had to tell us about the upcoming shindig:

“Kindred Spirit Brewing’s Satellite is poised to become a celestial haven for craft beer enthusiasts. The venue promises a vast and welcoming atmosphere, inviting patrons to relish a diverse array of handcrafted brews. Notably, among the stellar selection, Headspace, the brewery's flagship beer, will be a permanent fixture on tap[...]With a sprawling 5,600-square-foot layout, the Satellite boasts over 100 indoor seats and a menu that orbits around various appetizers, sandwiches, and more.

As a nod to the celestial theme, subtle hints of space and satellites will be interwoven throughout the ambiance, creating an atmosphere that is both down-to-earth and out-of-this-world.

Join Kindred Spirit Brewing on this cosmic journey, where every sip is a step into the vast universe of craft beer exploration.”

Where to get your chip fix: Keya Wingfield plans to launch her snack brand, Daksh Foods, next month. Named in tribute to her late son and her late mother, Keya has been working on this project for the last year, traveling to India to meet her spice suppliers and winning the Lighthouse Labs program’s Demo Day pitch competition. “The vision is for Daksh Foods to offer a catalog of goods, including chai-masala popcorn, cardamom cookies and animal crackers with an Indian twist. The first item, already on store shelves, is Bombay Chips, originally created to merge her taste and that of her American husband.” (Richmond magazine)

In a galaxy just down the street: GalaxyCon returns to the Greater Richmond Convention Center at the end of this week — Friday, March 15, through Sunday, March 17. This three-day festival will host stars like The Mandalorion cast; the Lawrence brothers; Josh, Joe, and Steve from Blue’s Clues; and William Shatner (to name just a few). The convention center will also be filled with vendors selling handmade jewelry, collectibles, T-shirts, comic books, and more. In the meantime, if that doesn’t psych you up enough, RVA Mag just published an interview with Captain Kirk himself. (GalaxyCon)

Attn, all murderinos: The Psychology of Serial Killers is coming to The National this spring! During this 90-minute thrilling experience, Dr. Rachel Toles, true crime’s pre-eminent psychologist, seeks to help us understand these burning questions:

  • Why do some women fall in love with these convicted killers?

  • Why are we so fascinated by serial killers and true crime?
