ED 66: New food trucks, big happenings, and perks
This Weekly Insider is proudly sponsored by Cirrus Vodka.
Hey there!
It sounds like Top Golf is opening next month! If you've driven down I-195 lately, then you've seen the massive construction seemingly pop up over night. Top Golf shared this photo of the progress on Monday stating they're "...excited to bring the best golf entertainment experience to #Richmond Virginia this September!" They are in the process of hiring over 400 positions which is awesome for our city!
THE LATEST:
FOOD + DRINK NEWS
A local Jackson Ward favorite is gearing up for a food truck! Salt & Forge opened April 2018 on N 2nd St serving sandwiches, salads, and breakfast and it's quickly become a popular spot. Expect to find a bustling cafe if you pop in there for lunch during the week (seriously, the sandwiches are GOOD). We're pretty excited to hear they'll be on the go in the form of a food truck. You can check out their full menu here and expect to find the fan favorites available on the food truck, which if we had to guess would include the chicken biscuit, Mellie's grilled cheese, and the brisket. If you don't feel like chasing down the food truck, just make plans to head over there for lunch soon. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
In other (and sweeter) food truck news, Jiji Frozen Custard is officially launching next week! You'll want to chase after this truck with smooth frozen custard and tons of toppings along with shakes, malts and rotating fundaes. (We don't even know what that is but we'll take it!) The wife behind this husband and wife duo is Kendall Appich of Nomaste Apparel. Keep an eye on their social for their whereabouts and please don't take any photos if you see us running down the street behind it.
Riverbend Coffee opened on Monday in Church Hill! Located in the former Captain Buzzy's, husband and wife team, and residents of the hill, took over the space and hope to keep the community coffee shop alive and buzzing. Expect to find your usual café suspects like lattes, iced coffee, and pastries.
Looking to sip on something other than booze in Richmond's beverage district? T-Caf, Salon de The is opening in Scott's Addition and will serve teas from around the world as well as some light fare. Personally, as temps drop we love a good cup of tea in our house so you can count on us to be popping in here for supplies. It's opening in the Fall across from Richmond Triangle Players. HAPPENINGS
Shop local Summer sales this Thursday through Saturday at the very first Richmond Retailers' Rodeo! Eight local retailers teamed up to host a Summer sale and support local nonprofits. Use code "RVA" for $5 off your ticket to shop this exclusive event (tickets are $10 to $25). Proceeds benefit Boots to Suits and Wear RVA. The event is being hosted at Scout & Molly's Richmond and includes items from Sweetest Stitch, My Keva Style, Creme de la Créme, Francis Khan, Tailor, The SEE Boutique, and Vash Bags.
Tickets for Fire, Flour, and Fork go on sale Friday! Named one of the top three food festivals in the nation by USA Today and garnering April 2019 press coverage in Bon Appetit, Fire, Flour and Fork comes back for a sixth year with more than 25 dinners, events, behind-the-scenes tours and talks. This 4-day culinary festival will take place between October 31 and November 3. Check out events and snag tickets here.
A House That Beer Built is a new initiative by our local Habitat for Humanity chapter and they need our help! Since June, our local breweries and cideries have agreed to donate proceeds to Habitat and will continue to hold events and donate proceeds through October. The goal is to raise enough funds to build a home, literally a house that beer built! Snag a coupon book for $12 and gain access to deals at participating spots plus check out the calendar of events for opportunities to drink and give back at the same time!
About Habitat for Humanity: Did you know participating families provide at least 350 hours (called sweat equity) toward building their own home and the homes of others in the program? They are also required to attend classes preparing for successful home ownership including one-on-one budgeting mentoring. Once the home is built, the participant pays the mortgage, all applicable taxes, insurance, and utilities. Most participants are primary caregivers working full time jobs. Habitat is working hard to debunk the idea that they simply just build homes and give them away for free. Learn more here.
NATIONAL ATTENTION
We continue to go on and one about ice cream but seriously isn't it the best treat when it is so. dang. hot? This time ice cream in RVA is making national news as Charm School was named the best ice cream in Virginia by USA Today! Last Fall owners, Alex & Meryl, invited us in to sample their new Fall flavors and we got quite the insight about how they got started, why they are so passionate, and all the work they put into each and every flavor. In the Summer they are cranking out so much, and certainly we don't want to discount the OG flavors like vanilla and peanut butter swirl but if you really want to see this duo flex, their Fall flavors are where it's at. The cooler temps give them a bit more breathing room to really explore complex flavors and recipes. They make just about make every single ingredient in house. Go visit them now but definitely make plans to go back in the Fall too. Congrats to our friends on this well-deserved recognition!
