Walk along the James on the North Bank/Buttermilk Loop Trail

Right in the heart of the city is a 6.5-mile loop that hugs the shoreline of our beloved James River. Whether starting on the Southside heading north or the Northside heading south, you’re sure to encounter beautiful sights, winding paths, and the liberating feeling only a trail can bring. Plus, if you’re looking to explore past the trails and touch rocks, Belle Isle and the Manchester Wall are the perfect spots to rock climb without having to travel outside the city!

Start from Downtown on the Pipeline Trail

While this trail is closed to the public for the time-being (more info here), we’re hopeful that won’t last forever, as it’s one of Richmond’s best-kept secrets. The Pipeline Trail takes you on a narrow walk over the James River’s rapids and offers a great spot to fish, birdwatch, or peep views of Bailey’s Island.

Location: End of South 12th St

Explore the Southside in Forest Hill Park

Home to the South of the James Farmers Market, Forest Hill Park is also home to almost three miles of trail south of the river. If you’re looking to escape the hustle of the city, but not looking to get on trails, necessarily, Forest Hill Park also boasts a lake lined with benches as your relaxation station.

Location: 4021 Forest Hill Ave

Enjoy something for everyone at Bryan Park

Nestled on the northside, Bryan Park is the ideal spot to get outside in the city. It holds close to three miles of trail, a disc golf course, several recreational fields, lakes for fishing, and spaces for outdoor cooking. Everyone can find something to enjoy here.
