The Trendspotter: June 2021
We’re back with our third edition of the latest offering from The Richmond Experience, The Trendspotter! This new content series features monthly roundups of the newest and hottest businesses, event series, and more around RVA.
Time to kick the summer off right! Here are the new need-to-know spots that MUST be on your radar this June…
— by Alicia Valenski
OPEN NOW:
Red Goat Pizza
What it is: Scott’s Addition’s newest pizza joint (from the same folks behind Goatocado)! They’re open IRL for you to stop in and order a slice from their kiosk, or you can order takeout or delivery on their website.
Why we love it: They serve pizza, salads, and what they call “Pizzanella,” which is basically a hybrid between the two. Yes, we’re describing a pizza salad, and yes, it’s a dream come true.
Where to find it: 2930 C West Broad St, behind Three Notch’d (Scott’s Addition)
Charm School Study Hall
What it is: Charm School’s new spot in Forest Hill — situated right by the new Blanchard’s Coffee and The Veil Brewing Co. locations.
Why we love it: It’s a soft serve-only shop, operating out of a walk-up window facing Jahnke Rd and currently open on weekends. You can always expect two dairy flavors and two vegan flavors to be available, with a wide selection of toppings.
Where to find it: 4930 Forest Hill Ave Ste D (Forest Hill)
Str8 Out Of Philly
What it is: In case the name didn’t give it away, this is a cheesesteak restaurant with recipes that come (you guessed it!) straight out of Philly.
Why we love it: This true-to-Philadelphia spot offers a whopping 13 (!) different types of cheesesteaks, from the classic Cheeseteak Hoagie to chicken, turkey, salmon, and vegan options — plus way more in terms of toppings, cheese options, sides, and drinks.
Where to find it: 405 N 1st St (Jackson Ward)
Stella’s Grocery - Westhampton
What it is: Located at the Libbie/Grove corridor in place of a former Starbucks, this new Stella’s Grocery location just opened two weeks ago.
Why we love it: They’ve got coffee, prepared foods, and the classic Stella’s items we know and love — plus, soon they’ll also be adding a Meze Bar complete with small plates as well as spritzes, wine, and cocktails!
Where to find it: 5802 Grove Ave (Westhampton)
EXPECTED TO OPEN THIS MONTH:
The Pit and The Peel Rooftop
What it is: The Pit and The Peel’s newest location offering the same juices, smoothies, acai bowls, and more that Richmond knows and loves.
Why we’re excited about it: Aside from the fact that it’s bringing rooftop vibes to The Fan, we’re obsessed with their new menu items like Bahn Mi, BBQ Jackfruit Tacos, Shiitake Mushroom Pizza, and more. Oh, and did we mention that in addition to “farm to table” fare, this new location will offer “garden to glass” cocktails, too?
Where to find it: 1210 W Main St (The Fan)
When it’s expected to open: Early June
Pizza Bones
What it is: Basked goods in the morning and pizza in the evenings, brought to you by native Virginian and VCU graduate Ashley Patino.
Why we’re excited about it: We’ve been ordering (arguably too many) pastries and pizza pies from Patino’s pop-ups at The Jasper, Recluse Coffe Roastery, and more throughout the entirety of the pandemic — and we’ve been waiting with bated breath for her to finally open a brick-and-mortar location so we can order ‘em from her directly!
Where to find it: 2314 Jefferson Ave (Church Hill)
When it’s expected to open: Mid-June
Zorch Pizza
What it is: One of Richmond’s most popular food trucks turned brick-and-mortar pizza shop.
Why we’re excited about it: Sure, this happens to be the third pizza spot we’re outlining on this list — but all three of them are so different and bring something new to Richmond’s dining scene! Zorch, for instance, crafts New York-style pizza by the slice (as well as in whole pies). While they’ve typically been known for slinging ‘za from The Veil and Hatch Kitchen, their new spot
Where to find it: 2923 W Cary St (Carytown)
When it’s expected to open: Late June
