Ed 102: Mint Juleps, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day
Hey there!
This Saturday would have been the Kentucky Derby, so if you feel inclined, hit up Perch or Hogshead Cafe for a Mint Julep cocktail to go (Hogshead will even make it a double for the same price). Next week, Taco Tuesday collides with Cinco De Mayo, and you can count on RVA restaurants to celebrate in a socially-distant fashion. Get ahead by working off your tacos before you indulge with Sports Backer’s Virtual Taco Trot 5k. And lastly, Mother’s Day is just over a week away, and we are here to help with a local gift guide! Our giveaway this week will keep your bevy cool as the temps warm-up, and our member perk is pretty adventurous. Onward…

SOCIAL NEWS
If you’ve ever seen the blue and yellow bus, the one with the ever-wafting smell of sweet, irresistible homemade donuts then, like us, you’ve always wondered when this bus would pop-up in the city limits. At last, First Stop Donuts is parking Flubert (the name of their school bus-turned-donut shop on wheels) at the corner of Malvern Ave and Grove Ave tomorrow, Thursday, April 30 from 8 AM to 11 AM. Drive, walk, or bike over to enjoy a hot apple cider donut. As per usual these days, order ahead and be prepared for social distance measures.
You have 10 days til Mother’s Day, so do yourself a favor and spend the next five minutes getting your game plan together. We suggest a beautiful bouquet of local, freshly picked flowers from River City Flower Exchange or a gift certificate to Scents of Serenity Organic Day Spa, use code “RVAX” for 15% off. Pizza came back to the hill as Mike and Maddy’s closed and Anthony’s On the Hill returned in Church Hill. Both restaurants are owned and operated by the same couple who decided to close Anthony’s towards the end of 2018 to make way for a bagel and breakfast concept. It seems there are plenty of breakfast options in Church Hill, including Riverbend Coffee Co, Union Market, WPA Bakery, and Sub Rosa Bakery, while the only other pizza joint is 8 ½. After trying the concept for more than a year and listening to the feedback from the community, they decided to make the switch back. Anthony’s On the Hill returned just before COVID hit, so we hope folks on the hill are ordering plenty of takeout pizza these days! (Church Hill People’s News)
Our friends at Project Yoga Richmond shared 5 Ways to Ease Anxiety, and it was a gentle reminder we all need to take a break and de-stress sometimes. These tips seem supremely helpful under normal circumstances and even more so now.
We’ve been curious how COVID has been impacting development projects like The Belleville food hall, Carytown Exchange, and The Hill Standard, a southside development with Veil Brewing as the anchor tenant. As if he could read our minds, Mike Platania over at Richmond BizSense shared an update this week on The Hill Standard and The Belleville. The former project has suffered minimal delays with an anticipated completion date approaching this summer while the food hall has seen more setbacks, and the completion date is unknown. During a recent drive-by of Carytown Exchange it certainly seemed like they had made significant progress since our last visit, so we suspect they are full steam ahead.
Local photographers are getting creative during these quarantine times in order to keep their businesses alive. Lindsey Martin, a newborn and family photographer, is offering presets, a configuration of photo editing settings to achieve a professional and polished-looking photo at the touch of a button. Sean and I held a quick maternity photoshoot using our iPhone, and Lindsey’s presets and they turned out pretty decent! Meanwhile, Emily Alwood owner of Emmi Claire Photography and Jake Roth of AKA Husky are taking to the streets to participate in the nationwide movement known as the Front Porch Project, where photographers snap photos of you and your quaran-team from the road.
