Ed 103: New Editor, Mural Map, Subs & Suds
This edition of the Weekly Insider is proudly brought to you by The Glaser Group.
Hey there!
We hope you’re all staying happy and healthy as we wait out this stay-at-home order (which, as you’ll read below, will be lifting in phases in weeks to come!). We’ve gathered some new carry-out and delivery options for you, along with the top virtual events happening in May, to help keep things from getting too boring in quarantine.
But first, some big news: The Richmond Experience is growing!
We’re excited to announce that Alicia Valenski has officially joined our team as our publication’s new full-time Managing Editor & Media Director. Starting next week, she’ll be the one sending you the Weekly Insider each Wednesday, and you’ll also start seeing her on our Instagram more often moving forward.
Originally from Hershey, PA, Alicia graduated from Penn State with a degree in journalism. She worked in media and marketing in Charlotte, NC for four years (where she co-founded her side hustle, Work For Your Beer) before moving to Richmond.
She and her husband Andrew bought a home in Northside a little over a year ago, where they now live with their Great Pyrenees pup named Luna Lovegood.
When we’re not all on a stay-at-home order, you can find her co-working from The Broad, brewery hopping through Scott’s Addition, reading on her porch swing, sweating it out on her yoga mat, or planning her next travel adventure.
If you have any story ideas for Alicia (or you just want to welcome her to The Richmond Experience), you can reach her at alicia@therichmondexperience.com anytime.
Now, on to this week’s news…
THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Governor Northam announced on Monday that Virginia will reopen for business in phases. The first of three phases for reopening is expected to begin next Friday, May 15. Further guidelines will be released soon, and we'll continue to add new information to our free guide to Navigation COVID-19 in Richmond as we receive more details.
This week The Jasper introduced "Jasperino's, the hottest new sub shop this side of the James." Which is to say: You can now order some of your favorite cocktails in town right to your doorstep, along with your choice of one or two submarine sandwiches (and a wide selection of beer, wine, and cider). Delivery is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 5 - 7 p.m. by pre-order only (they’re hoping to add Friday in soon), and you can check out the menu here. We've got our eye on an Italian Sub and a Caribbean Kween — oh, and if we didn't mention, each cocktail serves two. Cheers to that!
Though it was originally just postponed until June, Friday Cheers is now officially canceled. Venture Richmond announced late last week that they are working hard with the bands from this year's line-up to reschedule them for 2021. If you've already purchased a Friday Cheers ticket online, don't worry, you can request a refund by emailing support@ticketstobuy.com.
Daydreaming about a post-pandemic society? You're not alone. Not only that, but Richmond 300 wants your opinion on what Richmond's built environment might look like after our community gets through COVID-19 together. They recently released a survey regarding long-term effects of the pandemic on land use planning in Richmond, which you can take here.
If your social distancing walks are starting to get a little boring, add a few murals to your route. This Google map of the 100+ best murals in Richmond, created by 35-year-old Richmonder Blake Casavant, ought to help brighten things up a bit. Read more from Style Weekly about how and why he created this resource. He said, “I hope people will use this list to do a self-guided tour and perhaps explore RVA in a sort of scavenger hunt.” Make him proud!
Speaking of social distancing, stay safe with locally-made protective masks — and know that with every purchase, one protective mask is also provided to a frontline hero by Richmond retailer Ledbury. Masks are available in a 3-pack or a 1-pack, and Ledbury will match your purchase with a 1-for-1 donation straight to vulnerable populations in our community.
A few of our go-to restaurants have reopened, and we’re psyched. Perly’s is now open for carry-out and delivery, and you can find their menu here. Stella’s Grocery is back in action at their Downtown and Malvern Gardens locations. And Joe’s Inn will reopen its doors starting this Thursday, May 7. We’ve definitely got some take-out orders in our future.
And don’t forget, this Sunday is Mother’s Day! Just in case you procrastinated, we’ve got you covered with a guide full of awesome local gift ideas as well as a roundup of dining options for Mom’s special day, whether she prefers brunch, tea, or sweet treats to celebrate bringing you into the world. You’re welcome.

We’re all safe at home, and some of us are hankering for a little project. Seems like the perfect time to learn some indigo dyeing and shibori folding!
Miranda Anderson (aka @livefreemiranda) has been teaching natural indigo dyeing and shibori folding since 2014 and has taught dozens of workshops on the topic, in cities all over the country.
The workshop will cover dye mixing, preparation, several different folding methods, dyeing techniques, and care for the dyed fabrics. Miranda will also give a fun history of indigo, as well as a little bit about the chemistry involved that makes indigo dye so unique and special.
