Hey there, Alicia here.

It’s been a hard week. Our hearts are heavy.

It’s not enough to simply speak out about racism and injustice. Here are some actionable ways you can get involved and make a difference, locally here in Richmond and beyond.

We’re still going to share your weekly news and happenings below — but we hope that the link we shared above will take precedence.

We stand in solidarity with our Black community.

SOCIAL NEWS

Pizza Bones plans to open in Union Hill this September. Mike Platania at Richmond BizSense reported that the new pizzeria will open at 2314 Jefferson Ave. in the space formerly occupied by Tricycle Gardens, near Union Market. As far as what type of pizza they’ll serve, owner Ashley Patino (formerly of Lamplighter, then Sub Rosa) says you can expect a “neo-Neapolitan” style, somewhere between New York thin crust and Connecticut-style pizza.

The newly renovated Lilly Pad Cafe will reopen this Friday, June 5 for reservations. This beloved local riverfront spot at the Kingsland Reach Marina is accepting reservations by email at lillypadreservations@gmail.com — just note that the cut-off time for reservations is 3 pm the day before you intend to visit. They’ll be starting with a limited food menu, and they’re asking patrons to wear masks or face coverings. More details here. Can’t you smell the burgers already?

The former Champion Brewing space downtown is being replaced by a comedy club. Richmond BizSense reported that new-to-Richmond couple Carrie and Michael Sands will open the Sandman Country Club at the old bank building at 401 E Grace St. They plan to have seating for around 300, and to “bring in established comedians while keeping the tickets in the $15 to $25 range.”

Public art project All In Together VA is creating something beautiful for (and with) our community. The group came up with the idea to create public art installations that will be split up into coloring sheets and colored by the public. Once colored and submitted, these sheets will be used to assemble several 8′ x 8′ murals in different locations all over Virginia. It all starts with a series of 8.5” x 11” coloring pages that you can download and color, then upload or mail to All In Together VA. The goal is to receive many different versions as possible of each coloring page, to allow for many different versions of the installation across the state. Get involved here.

Christopher’s Runaway Gourmay has reopened their food cart with some new, socially distant features. There’s now a 6 ft. plexiglass between staff and customers, and they will only be accepting payment by card. You can find the cart at 12th & Marshall, offering a full menu for lunches as well as 16 oz containers of salads ($8), pastas ($5), mixed fruit ($5), and marinated cucumbers or coleslaw ($3) to go. They hope to get a cart on Main St. soon, too. Find out more here.

Starting today, Triangle Rock Club is offering outdoor bootcamps. Classes will meet in the gym’s parking lot and comply with local public health requirements. Every workout has strength, cardio, core and conditioning with common sense programming. Learn more and register here.

HAPPENINGS

Brambly Park, the new 2-acre winery in Scott’s Addition, will celebrate its grand opening this Friday, June 5. They plan to release even more of their wines (including a rosé from award-winning winemaker Michael Shaps) in addition to serving beer and cocktails — all from a safe social distance. Here’s everything we know about it so far.
