Ed 106: Drive-In Concert, Pride Ride, Blockbuster
This edition of the Weekly Insider is proudly brought to you by All-Star Orthodonics.
Hey there! Alicia here 👋
It feels a little weird to be transitioning into a new season while we’re still in a pandemic, right? We may have missed out on a lot of spring, but we’re feeling hopeful about summer!
While Mayor Stoney has said he’d like Richmond to start easing some COVID-19 restrictions, it looks like we’re still at least a week away from entering Phase One along with most of the rest of the state — which would allow restaurants to offer outdoor dining and non-essential retail shops to reopen (both at 50% capacity), fitness studios to host outdoor classes again, and more.
For the time being, we’ve updated our free Navigating COVID-19 in Richmond guide to reflect everything you need to know about what’s happening here now, and what resources are available to you now.
And of course, we’ll continue to add new “social distancing friendly” city guides each week so you can make the most of these uncertain times — including this week’s list of must-try frozen desserts, our Father’s Day gift guide, and more.
Now, let’s talk about this week’s social news…
THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
You’ve heard of drive-in movies, but what about drive-in concerts? Broadberry Entertainment Group — the organization behind local live music venues like The Broadberry and The Camel — is organizing Richmond’s first drive-in concert, the Catalina Car Mixer: Richmond’s Drive-In Regatta Concert ft. Three Sheets to the Wind. (Yes, that’s a Step Brothers “Catalina Wine Mixer” reference). This yacht rock concert will take place on Saturday, June 13 at 8 pm in the parking lot at City Stadium. Tickets are sold per vehicle at $99 each, and they go on sale today at 12 pm here.
Reservoir Distillery is selling pre-made cocktail pouches to go. Options include Open Door Policy (strawberry infused Hunter and Scott whiskey, lemon juice, and honey) and Pau Hana (pineapple infused corn whiskey, mango nectar, and Peychaud’s bitters). Each pouch is $12 and contains two drinks — so sip responsibly!
Transition from #RVABikeMonth to #RVAPride this weekend with the Pride Ride. Given the current state of things, the second annual Pride Ride won’t be a group activity like the first one was. Instead, participants are invited to follow along a mapped out route of the LGBTQ+ history of Richmond. The digital version of the map will be uploaded here this Friday, or if you prefer, you can snag a printed copy from the Little Free Library on Grace and Belvidere.
The deadline to submit an essay or poem for the “Stories of Home” contest is this Friday, May 29! Richmond Magazine and the Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity are co-hosting an essay and poetry contest about the importance of having safe, stable shelter — which of course, has taken on even more meaning for us all since March. The winning poem and essay will be published in Richmond magazine's R•Home in July, and the winners will each receive a $100 gift card to the Habitat ReStore. Contest details here.
“Pay-per-view” moves to “pay-it-forward” with Richmond’s new Free Blockbuster stands. Not one, not two, but three pop-up Free Blockbuster stands have arrived in Richmond. You can find these “take a movie, leave a movie” cubbies in Church Hill, The Fan, and Oregon Hill filled with comedies, thrillers, kids flicks, and more — not to mention movie snacks and candies left by generous neighbors.
Search for historical clues around the city with the #RVAHistoryHunt. Now through August 23, when you complete either the physical or digital scavenger hunts hosted by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, the Valentine, and 15 other Richmond cultural organizations, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win museum shop discounts and items from participating locations around the city. Find out how to participate here.
Richmond women in beer collaborated to release a bright pink sour ale just in time for summer. Members of the Richmond chapter of Pink Boots Society (a non-profit that offers financial assistance, education, and more to women in the craft beer industry) came together for #PinkBootsBrew day in March at Väsen Brewing Company. Together, they crafted Hathor Gose, a raspberry pink himalayan sea salt sour beer that is named for Hathor, goddess of femininity, drunkenness, and dancing. Seems fitting!
You can now hop aboard a virtual, 360-degree canal cruise experience from the safety of your own home. The folks at Riverfront Canal Cruises partnered with Venture Richmond to create a simulation of an actual tour of the canal and Richmond's history that viewers of all ages can learn from and enjoy. Whether you’re looking for new activities to keep the kiddos occupied or you wish you could be out on a canal cruise yourself, it’s a great local entertainment option!
NOTABLE RICHMONDER
Courtney Moates Paulk. Not only is she the first female president of Virginia-based law firm Hirschler Fleischer, but the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Courtney is also the first marathon swimmer to claim a Triple Triple Crown — meaning that she has swam coast to coast through the English Channel (21 miles) and the Catalina Channel (20 miles) and circumnavigated Manhattan (28.5 miles) each three times.
Her ultimate goal, though? To swim each of the channels both ways, and to do two laps around Manhattan.
