Hey there! Alicia here 👋

You know how there have been so many social media posts flying around about the out-of-the-ordinary hobbies folks have picked up during the pandemic? Well, here’s a fun one for you: my husband, Andrew, has become obsessed with the new pedestrian signs that the City of Richmond has put up at crosswalks.

He has taken to reddit to chronicle the journey of one sign in particular at the intersection of Brookland Park Blvd. and Richmond-Henrico Tpk. in Northside.

And weirdly, people are like… Really into it? To the point where people are asking him to record and post video updates about the sign each day. Some guy gave him a hunting video camera. Others are sending money to keep the project going. And r/rva mods changed the subreddit’s description to read "News, events, and goings-on in and around Richmond, Virginia. And opossums. And people driving over signs."

At this point, the City of Richmond has contacted him directly to see what all the fuss is about, and WRIC has called him to set up an interview about the situation.

This honestly doesn’t tie back to this week’s edition of The Insider in any way, I just feel like it’s gotten so surprisingly out of hand that it needed to be shared. So, in case you’re not active on reddit and have somehow missed the saga of The Sign, here’s a little something to entertain you this morning!

Now, on to this week’s social news — including…

  • The grand reopening of a Euro-inspired sour beer spot that is simultaneously too Instagrammable and too delicious to miss

  • Not one, not two, but seven different markets happening around the city this Saturday — how on earth will we choose?

  • Earth Day event options ranging from litter clean-up events to plant sales to flower gazing and beyond

  • The soft opening of a brand new sports bar happening at the exact same time as a beer release honoring a beloved Richmond pup who recently passed (and benefiting a local animal shelter)

…and more. Let’s go!

SOCIAL NEWS

Won’t you take me to Funkytown? By which of course I mean The Funkhaüst Café, which officially celebrated its grand reopening at 2256 Dabney Road Suite F this past Thursday. As The Veil Brewing’s self-proclaimed “special, eclectic, European-inspired taproom in [their] funky and wild barrel-aging facility,” this spot features four rotating "easy-drinking" beers at any given time (like lagers, IPAs, and wheat beers) along with a variety of sours to choose from.

Looking for some fancier funk? Opt for on-premise bottle service and sample The Veil’s vintages ranging from Lambic-inspired brews to Barleywines to Barrel-aged stouts and beyond. This spot is open Thursdays and Fridays from 5 - 9 pm as well as Saturdays from 2 - 8 pm with both indoor and (limited) outdoor seating.

Speaking of beer, let’s raise a glass to Bruce. Legend Brewing Co. has partnered with the Richmond SPCA to release Bruce’s Bier this week in memory of beloved Richmond pup Bruce, who passed away at 12 years old in December 2020. This brew will be a light and crisp Bavarian Pilsner, almost as approachable as the legendary Swissie himself.

You can head to Legend tomorrow (Thursday, April 22) to celebrate this release paw-ty while also supporting a great cause — because for each draft pint and 4-pack sold, Legend Brewing Co. will donate $1 to the Richmond SPCA, a "non-profit, no-kill humane organization dedicated to the principle that every life is precious." To Bruce.

A spectacular spring Sunday. Head to the soon-to-open Pizza Bones space in Church Hill (at 2314 Jefferson Ave) this Sunday, April 25 from 12 - 5 pm to shop a wide variety of local vendors at their highly anticipated Spring Pop-Up Market!

You'll find ceramics, apparel, beauty products, plants, textiles, and all kinds of other goodies from more than a dozen different Richmond makers and small biz owners like Bear Ceramics, River City Selections, Fern Hill Landscaping & Nursery, North 24 Home, and more — plus treats and bevs from Pizza Bones, Ruby Scoops Ice Cream & Sweets, and Recluse Roasting Project.

And that’s not the only market happening this weekend. On Saturday, we’ve also got the kickoff event for Artisan Market Saturdays at Eat 66, another Pop-Up Market at The Diamond, and the Richmond Moon Market, which will actually take place Saturday and Sunday at Triple Crossing Fulton.

In terms of farmers’ markets: The South of the James Market is still happening at Bryan Park on Saturdays from 9 am - noon. The West End Farmers Market is happening at the same time at 13000 Gayton Rd. And the Lakeside Farmers Market will also be happening at the same time at 6106 Lakeside Ave.

Lots of options, y’all — get those reusable tote bags ready!

Say hello to Richmond’s newest sports bar. Shockoe Bottom will soon welcome Stadium Sports Bar at 119 N 18th St, where Richmonders will be able to gather to watch their athletic teams of choice competing on a plethora of big-screen TVs in a lively atmosphere. Expect classic sports bar fare like wings and draft beer, along with more eclectic and upscale options like craft cocktails and crabcake BLTs.

The soft opening is happening tomorrow (Thursday, April 22) from 4 - 11 pm, where guests will get the chance to snag some free swag and enter to win giveaways in addition to taste-testing menu items. Register and RSVP here before you go!

Reminder: It’s still Richmond Restaurant Week! If you haven’t had the chance to get involved yet, you’ve got until this Sunday, April 25 to support local restaurants, give back to the community, and eat some truly amazing food.

There are a whopping 61 restaurants participating, and all you have to do decide is which restaurant(s) you'd like to support — then you can either dine-in, eat al fresco, or order for take-out or delivery. Each restaurant will have $5 donations to FeedMore available on their online menu throughout the duration of RRWeek (a $5 donation can provide up to 20 meals for a neighbor in need!).

HAPPENINGS

Don’t forget, tomorrow’s Earth Day. Consider celebrating Mother Earth by participating in one of the following local events:

Earth Day Plant Pop-Up - Black-owned plant shop Green Vibes RVA will be popping up at BOHO Fit Studio with plants for sale - Thursday, April 22 from 6 - 8 pm

A Million Blooms - See the daffodils, tulips, bluebells, and more bursting into bloom at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden - Now through June 1

4th Annual Earth Day Plogging Event - Join the folks at Keep Virginia Cozy to clean up litter and recycling at Belle Isle, then grab a beer or kombucha at Väsen with the group after you finish up - Sunday, April 25 from 11 am - 1 pm

Weekly Giveaway

Discover Richmond
Mother’s Day 2021 Gift Box

Just a quick PSA that Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 9 this year — aka, it’s just a few weeks away.

Our pals at Discover Richmond put together a Mother’s Day 2021 gift box so you can treat mama to a variety of lovely local items.

The best part? You can either have the gift hand-delivered to her doorstep the day before Mother’s Day if she lives in Richmond, or you can ship it to her anywhere in the country in time for Mother’s Day if she lives somewhere else. Easy peasy.

We’re giving away one local delivery gift box AND one shippable gift box, so we’ll be selecting two lucky winners this week!

To enter to win: Tell me one thing you love about the mama you’d gift this to (+ be sure to include whether you’re seeking local delivery or nationwide shipping)!

Last week: Congratulations to Allie S. for winning our Fresh Pic Photo Booth giveaway!
