Hey there! Alicia here 👋

In case the annual JT meme hasn’t popped up on your social media feeds just yet, allow me to remind you: It’s Gonna Be May.

I’m not sure how April flew by so quickly, but with the sun shining and temperatures climbing, I’m not here to complain.

There are so many event series and restaurant openings to start getting excited about as we head into a fresh new month. I’m already certain that May’s edition of The Trendspotter (dropping next week) is going to be packed with must-try spots and activities, so keep your eyes peeled!

For now, let’s talk about this week’s need-to-know social news, including…

  • The glorious weekly outdoor yoga classes kicking off this week — not one, not two, but three of ‘em in beautiful spots around RVA

  • Drive-in movie season’s return to Richmond for 2021, and where you can catch a single- or double-feature (and hit the snack bar) this weekend

  • The “global street food” restaurant that just opened downtown with a drool-worthy cocktail list and menu items from all around the world

  • Your last chance to snag tickets for a variety of different one-time-only events happening this week including a dance fitness fundraiser, an author panel, and multiple fashion shows

…and more. C’mon!

THE LATEST:

SOCIAL NEWS

Let’s hear three om-s for outdoor yoga. If you’re a fan of community classes, you’re in luck! Richmond’s got a few for you to choose from, all of which are kicking off this week:

Tuesdays, 6 pm - One Drop Yoga @ Maymont (pay what you can)

Wednesdays, 6 pm - BareSOUL @ 17th Street Market ($7 - $15)

Thursdays, 6 pm - One Drop Yoga @ VA War Memorial (pay what you can)

Clean (Native) Plate Club. In case you missed it, Native Plate just opened this week downtown at 1203 E Main St serving up dishes inspired by global street food, with Asian and American influences. This concept comes from Lorna Bedford, who after six years working at her mother Sunisa Polishuk’s restaurants (Mom’s Siam, Mom’s Siam 2, Pik Nik, and YaYa’s Cookbook) decided to open her own venture.

A peek at Native Plate’s menu reveals a wide selection of items with influences from all around the world, ranging from bulgogi BBQ to kong fu chow to duck bao buns and beyond.

Their cocktail menu has also piqued my interest — I've got my eye on "This Sh*t Is Bananas" (ft. banana-infused Pusser's rum, coconut milk, pineapple, toasted coconut, demerara, lime, walnut bitters, nutmeg, and boozy brûlée banana) and the "Dirty Duck" (ft. duck fat-washed Hayman's Old Tom gin, sesame oil rinse, garlic olive brine, and house-made chive oil).

Books and wine? We’re in. The 76th Annual Book & Author Event — the longest-running event of its kind in the country! — is happening this Thursday, April 29 at 7 pm, benefiting the Junior League of Richmond.

For $25, you'll have the chance to attend this virtual event and hear from a panel of six acclaimed female authors about their newly released books (three of which have already hit the NY Times Best Seller's list!), which are all available for purchase at Fountain Bookstore, a local independent woman-owned bookstore and official Book & Author Event partner.

Order some wine from official event partner Richwine to pair with the panel and thank us later!

Heads up: Junior League of Richmond partnered with us to promote this rad event.

Drive-in season is back, y’all. Our beloved Richmond-area open-air movie theatre, the Goochland Drive-In, has officially reopened for 2021. And man, am I ready to hit that snack bar!

You can catch ONE of the TWO double-feature options on both Fridays and Saturdays — either on the Main Screen or at The Grove. In both spots, the gates open at 6 pm, and the first film starts at 8 pm. On Sundays, you can enjoy a single feature, with gates opening at 6:30 pm and showtime at 8 pm.

Here’s what’s playing this weekend:

Friday, April 30 on the Main Screen: Ghost” (1990) followed by “When Harry Met Sally” (1989)

Friday, April 30 at The Grove: Mortal Kombat” (2021) followed by “Nobody” (2021)

Saturday, May 1 on the Main Screen: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” (1993) followed by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018)

Saturday, May 1 at The Grove: Mortal Kombat” (2021) followed by “Nobody” (2021)

Sunday, May 2 on the Main Screen: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018)

Sunday, May 2 at The Grove: Mortal Kombat” (2021)

Snag tickets for your car-load here before they sell out!

We like to move it, move it — especially for a good cause. Richmond Urban Dance (a Southside-based dance company focused exclusively on street-style dance) and Baker Unified Fitness (a locally-owned gym based in Shockoe Bottom) have teamed up for a new event series called Moves On A Mission.

100% of proceeds from this series of dance fitness classes will be donated to NAMI Central Virginia to support free mental health support programs in the area.

The first class in the series will take place this Thursday, April 29 from 6:30 - 8 pm in the Green Lot at The Diamond. The event is totally donation-based, so the organizers simply ask that you pay what you can — you can register here.

New menu, who dis? The Cocky Rooster, our go-to wing spot in The Fan, teased that they'll be dropping a new menu this Friday, April 30. Stay tuned here.
