RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Julia Warren: Founder and executive director at Celebrate! RVA, a nonprofit organization with a mission to give disadvantaged children a memorable birthday celebration in a safe and fun environment. Julia and her team host birthday parties for underserved children in Richmond who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to have a party for their special day.

A $20 donation to Celebrate! RVA allows the organization to provide one birthday bag to a local child including everything they need to host their own COVID-safe celebration from home. You can learn more and donate here.

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including when and where you can engage in a little friendly competition at a (free!) “adult recess” event this weekend, can’t-miss specials and drink releases happening during the Scott’s Addition Pride Crawl on Saturday, the new dessert shop coming to Jackson Ward next month that already has our mouths watering, and more.

COMING SOON

A brunchtime Pride party? We’ll see you there! While the Virginia Pride Festival was unfortunately canceled due to COVID concerns, the Soul Taco Pride Party is still on for next Saturday, September 25! Seats will be assigned and masks will be required; more info here.

They'll be blacking out the windows, dimming the lights, and dancing to music by DJ Statistics while enjoying delicious brunch fare and cocktails. A $10 ticket will cover your first mimosa, a reservation for either 11:30 am (here) or 2 pm (here), access to an aspiring drag artist competition that will crown RVA’s next amateur drag queen/king, and a donation to Stonewall Sports. Snag your spot before they’re all booked up.

See you soon, Suzy Sno. Jack Jacobs at Richmond BizSense reports that Ruby Scoops owner and recent Food Network award-winner Rabia Kamara is working on a new frozen dessert venture called Suzy Sno, expected to open at 317 N 2nd St in Jackson Ward in early October.

Suzy Sno will serve New Orleans-style snowballs, specialty frozen desserts described as "a mound of fluffy shaved ice, flavored with sweet syrups and topped or stuffed with a number of mix-ins and add-ons." Folks are already commenting on Suzy Sno’s Instagram requesting flavors like Egg Custard, Wedding Cake condensed milk, and more. We can’t wait to try them all — knowing Rabia, it’s going to be absolutely delicious.

Weekly Giveaway

Sunday Table Co.

This local company is owned by Richmonders Virginia and Emilie, two BFFs who have been friends since middle school. They started Sunday Table Co. two years ago, and they named the business after another close friend of theirs who passed away a few years ago who continues to inspire them today.

In addition to selling simple, playful paper goods like postcards, stickers, and prints, they also have coffee cups, magnets, tote bags, and more featuring beloved spots all around RVA. And they do custom artwork if there’s a particular spot in town that is special to you or a person you love. Hello, meaningful gift idea!

This week, we’re giving away one of their “Cocktails of Richmond” prints, valued at $18 in their Etsy shop and featuring 29 of RVA’s most notable libations.

To enter to win: Tell us one of your favorite cocktail spots in Richmond! We’re big fans of the Cirrus Vodka tasting room, personally.

Last week: Congratulations to Amber L. for winning our Sun Theory Co. giveaway!
