THIS WEEK

BEWARE! Spooky season is lurking around the corner. Eerie Nights Ghost Tours opened ticket sales for their haunted walking ghost tours on Friday and Saturday nights in October ($16). Eerie Nights offers a theatrical storytelling experience where guides in special effects make-up and period costume lead you to several historic and haunted sites as they share tales of the history and paranormal activity associated with each location.

Public tours depart at 8 pm, and advance ticket purchase is strongly encouraged. Already got a ghastly crew of your own? Inquire about booking a private tour here. Tours meet at the 17th St Farmers Market.

We took this tour in the rain (with umbrellas and rain boots), and even in less-than-ideal weather, it was such a spooky and fun experience! Stay tuned for a city guide roundup of all the best haunts in and around Richmond.

Hey, what’s that smell? It’s another Smash Castle pop-up! If you missed the first one or made it and you’ve been dreaming about it ever since, we’ve got good news. Pre-orders are open for pick-up at Hatch Cafe this Thursday, September 23, from 5 - 8 pm to snag crave-worthy Smash Castle Sliders. These better-than-White-Castle knockoffs are made with Seven Hills beef patties, American cheese, Smash sauce, and beef fat onions, served on brioche sliders from Back Alley Bakes. Not a meat-eater? Try their Vegan Smash Sliders prepped with roasted shiitake mushrooms, soy, garlic, and spicy vegan mayo, served on brioche sliders from Back Alley Bakes. Either way, it’ll be $15 for four sliders and an order of Smash fries or $25 for eight sliders and two orders of Smash fries. Order up!

The highly anticipated Fall Line opens tomorrow. ICYMI, Fall Line Kitchen & Bar is an upscale-casual eatery inside the newly renovated Richmond Marriott Downtown. This new food destination will offer ingredient-focused comfort food along with craft beer and cocktails, with menu items ranging from lump crab hushpuppies and iron skillet cornbread, to wagyu steak frites, truffled bucatini, and a belly-on pork chop.

Fall Line will initially be open daily for dinner starting at 5 pm with an indoor dining area, outdoor patio, and indoor bar seating. Make a reservation here. And while you’re there, check out the hand-painted mural of a Kingfisher bird created by local artist Hamilton Glass.

It’s officially Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15 through October 15, the region highlights and celebrates the history and contributions of individuals who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean. Check out the full calendar of events here, and certainly don’t miss Restaurante Week happening October 11 - 17, a week-long celebration of Latin Cuisine hosted by the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Pictured above is a new mural at Diversity Richmond highlighting Viva RVA!, an outreach program serving Richmond’s LGBTQ+ & Latinx communities. The mural was painted by local artist Marshall Higgins in collaboration with Ben Batemann. Learn more about Viva RVA! programming and resources here.

Today is the first official day of fall. But if your mood still says summer (let’s face it, it is still hot outside and will likely be for a while longer), then mark your calendar to breeze over to James River Cellars Winery for a poptail on Saturday, October 2. This pop-up features a variety of wines paired perfectly with different popsicle flavors by King of Pops Richmond.

If you’re already trading your short sleeves for flannels, then IronClad Coffee Roasters has you covered with their new autumnal beverage menu that looks so complex and fascinating it makes the PSL look super basic. Did we mention it’s available now?

COMING SOON

Diagon Alley returns to Carytown! Carytown Cupcakes kicks off their annual “Cary Potter” celebration October 4 - 10. Last year, the event was modified for COVID, and while this year’s details have yet to be released, we wanted to make sure you had it on your calendar. In years past, the shop was transformed into the wizarding world of Harry Potter featuring Diagon Alley and the Forbidden forest, along with book readings, trivia and bingo, a Horcrux hunt, and more taking place throughout the week.

And we can’t forget about the cupcakes! Look for flavors like Butterbeer, Gold Snitch, Sorting Hat, Detention with Umbridge, Aunt Petunia's Pudding, and Dumbledore's Favorite Sherbert Lemon. We are hoping they will also bring back the house-made Butterbeer soda. Keep an eye on their social for details!

Start planning for an amazing weekend of music and culture! The 17th Annual Richmond Folk Festival is happening October 8 - 10 and you can find the full schedule here. This three-day festival is free to attend with the option to purchase food and drink among the several stages scattered throughout the festival site. View the festival map here. The Richmond Folk Festival will take place:

Friday, October 8; 6:30 - 10 pm
Saturday, October 9; 1 - 9:30 pm
