Ed 192: Black History Month, Ice Cream for Bkfst, February Trendspotter

Hey, y’all! 👋

If you, too, already ate up the first half of Ozark: Season 4 as if it would otherwise expire like an avocado, we’re workin’ for you, babe. It’s a new month, and it’s jam-packed.

For starters, it’s Black History Month! We’ll be tuned in to all the celebratory goings-on, but we also suggest following folks like @visitblkrva, who’s increasing Black tourism to the Richmond region and knows exactly what to do, where to eat, and how to ~catch a vibe~ in the city.

We’ve also got our eyes set on these this month:

And that’s just generally speaking. Get your planners out and your pencils sharpened, because there’s quite a bit happening around RVA this February to keep us in party mode, too.

… And/or to keep us occupied while we wait for the second half of Ozark: Season 4. Seriously, when is Netflix dropping it? Help.

THE LATEST:

THE LETTER OF THE WEEK IS “B”

Forest Hill gets Boho: Boho Studios, that is. The local fitness chain opened its third (and largest) location—this time, going south of the river and adding climbing machines to its equipment offerings. Boho Quad boasts 2,600 square feet of space to stretch and sweat and (so far) the option to book a “Quad60” class, which offers a full-body workout. (Richmond BizSense)

Libbie-Grove suits the new Beecroft & Bull location: The men’s specialty store is joining a collection of menswear shops in the area, including Alton Lane and Peter-Blair Accessories. Maybe you’re in the market for some fresh threads to wear on a hot date this Valentine’s Day? Beecroft & Bull has you covered. (Richmond BizSense)

Book some time with Sadeqa Johnson: The Richmond local and author of Yellow Wife will be chatting and signing copies of her novel at the highly-anticipated debut of Shockoe Bottom’s new book-and-wine shop, The Book Bar. Get there for the ribbon cutting at 11 am, then stay a while to sip, stroll, and shop. (Instagram)

The scoop on breakfast: It’s the most important meal of the day, but dessert may be just as crucial. Combine the two this Saturday morning at any Gelati Celesti location, where they’ll be celebrating Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. Wear your PJs, and you’ll score a free donut, too. (Instagram)

BEATS & EATS

A new slate in Jackson Ward: The Canvas will take over Strange Matter’s former location, giving music artists and fans alike another Richmond venue to enjoy. While its focus will be on hip-hop, the owner says the space emphasizes “raw” hip-hop enthusiasts, specifically; not “the TikTok rappers or people influenced by A&R and wearing or saying whatever just to get likes, streams, and views.” (Richmond BizSense)

Get in line: The Instagram comments alone let us know pop-up restaurant Young Mother’s “FamilyMart” event is where you want to eat this Sunday. The Korean-and-Japanese-inspired spot has had fans waiting weeks to get a taste of its cuisine before, and it’s apparent their mouths are watering in anticipation of this weekend’s spread, too. The Jasper hosts and suggests you show up early. (Instagram)

Wine and Warrior poses: Gallery5 is hosting a series of “Yoga and Wine Down” classes every Monday night in February. They’re for “everybody and every body,” catering to all levels of yoga. Get a workout in, then stay for a glass of wine. (Instagram)

I dip, you dip, we dip: Longoven is making our sandwich dreams come true this weekend with a pop-up featuring Chef Andrew Manning’s “Agneau Puant” French dip: Slow-roasted leg of lamb, caramelized onion miso, smoked cabbage, and Taleggio cheese stacked next to a side of wood-fired lamb jus. *carefully picks jaw off the floor* (Instagram)
