RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Doug Ash: He’s the talented photog behind this week’s Featured Insta Image up top! Doug sells some other super gorg pieces on his website, too, so if you’re already in holiday-shopping mode and looking for a great RVA-centric gift for someone on your list, we think one of his works may very well fit the bill. And, considering his keen eye behind the lens, this Richmond adventurer knows a thing or two about where to get a great shot of the River City.

THE LATEST:

MEET & GREET

Welcome to the neighborhood(s): Richmond welcomed two new spots to its ever-growing small-biz scene over the weekend: The Lion’s Den and Cannabist! The Jackson Ward cigar lounge features a restaurant, bar, and premium cigars, while the Carytown medical marijuana dispensary offers cannabis buds, joints, edibles, and other products in the leafy-green family. Ringing in the new year with some change: RichWine founders, Kristen Gardner Beal and Lance Lemon, are bringing a wine-and-tapas concept to life in Jackson Ward. In February, their new spot, Penny’s — which will set up shop in the former Stoplight Gelato space — has plans to kick things off with more than 50 bottles of wine in stock and a menu of small plates and more created by Manny Eats founder, Emmanuel Baiden. As Beal said to Richmond magazine of the spot, named in honor of the neighborhood’s St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, “It is a nod to the savings bank and history of Jackson Ward. Also, with our ties of being a Black-owned business, I spent 10 years in banking; it’s just a great way to pay homage — we’re investing our time and money into this.” (Richmond magazine)

*FULL TRAYS* of to-go mac-and-cheese: Beloved soul-food eatery Mama J’s has plans to extend its set-up in Jackson Ward and open Mama J’s Market in a nearby storefront. Co-owner Lester Johnson says the market will provide to-go options, like mac and candied yams, which folks can grab, heat up, and enjoy with a meal at home. The spot has offered such options since opening, but the popularity has (of course *drool*) grown, requiring a bit more elbow room to meet demand. (Richmond BizSense)

EVENT PLANNING

Some in-cider plans: Virginia Cider Week starts this Friday, November 11, and runs through Sunday, November 20. Enjoy the days-long event featuring festivals, tastings, pairing dinners, workshops, and open houses at various spots throughout VA. Keep an eye on all our fave local cideries in the days to come to see how they’ll participate. (Virginia Cider)

Gimme pizza. P-I-Z-Z-A: Pizza Bones is hosting its second annual Bonesgiving this Saturday, November 12, from 1 to 5 pm. Visit the East End pie shop for an aft of wine-and-cider-tasting, pizza-eating, and friend-making. The shindig will feature more than 12 beverage options to enjoy, and attendees receive 5% off any wine purchased that day. And there’s an after-party that starts, well, after — from 5 to 9 pm — and Royal Pig is on the guest list. (Pizza Bones, Instagram)

On your mark, get set, bake!: Next Move Program’s Tablespoons Bakery is set to host The Great RVA Bake Off in its inaugural year next week. On Saturday, November 19, from noon to 2 pm, local celebs will compete at the sweet spot in a culinary competition, all in the spirit of supporting the non-profit org’s mission to combat the 70% unemployment rate for young adults with developmental disabilities here in the Commonwealth. (Eventbrite)

Pop some bottles: Carytown’s non-alcoholic bottle shop, Point 5, recently announced it’ll begin hosting private tasting events. They’ll provide the alcohol-free beer, wine, and spirits; glassware; and education; you’ll invite up to fourteen of your closest friends. Or if you want to expand your invitee list, Point 5 will help you plan an at-home tasting instead. Visit the store’s website or send an email to point5rva@gmail.com to get a more detailed scoop or start your planning. (Instagram)
