Hello, hello!
I’m starting with an ode to Pizza Bones. The fam and I went there for dinner last week, and I’m already excited to do it all again this week (ahem, on Thursday, ahem, for our book club meeting, ahem, ahem).
The owner’s dream for this spot in Union Hill was "baked goods in the morning, pizza party at night," and if that doesn’t sum up the perfection of it all, the picnic-table patio seating; part dining room, part wine shop (Friend Bar); and shimmering disco ball ought to do the trick.
Pizza Bones is quickly becoming my favorite restaurant in the East End, and that’s practically because of those (☝️) details alone. But then, of course, there is the pizza: The crust is crispy, yet doughy. There’s juiciness involved when it comes to the sauce and melted cheese. And the topping options are simple in a way that is exactly right, not skimpy. (I order my pie with onion and pepperoni, by the way.)
Like, Pizza Bones is so good, I’ve purchased two different T-shirts from the merch shop at two different times. I love it there! And if you’re looking for dinner plans this week, or you had dinner plans this week but you want other dinner plans this week, or [insert any other reason here], add this place to your rotation. If you go on Industry Night (see: Monday night, currently) and you work in education, health, or food and beverage, let them know when you order in person and you'll score 15% off your tab. (Their hours are here, FYI.)
Now, on to more Richmond things you should definitely know about.

Beep, beep!: It’s Ride the Bus Week! Now through this Saturday, May 20, Virginia Interfaith Power & Light is encouraging Richmonders to leave their cars at home and take the bus a couple of times in an effort to prioritize public transportation. If you haven’t already, sign up here to join the movement, and make your transpo plans for errand-running, your commute to and from work, or another outing. (Virginia Interfaith Power & Light)
A movie date and then some: Criterion Cinemas at Movieland has a makeover in its future. The four-screen film house will transform into a retail and restaurant space for TBD patrons. Floor-to-ceiling windows, patio seating, a brewery, a restaurant, and a food hall are all part of the potential plans for the space, which will begin undergoing its transformation in the coming weeks. And in the meantime, Movieland is showing its Short Film Series: Love Stories today, May 17. (Richmond BizSense)
Here’s the deal: The Science Museum of Virginia is having $10 admission days this spring, summer, and fall. The first of the 10 dates happens this Thursday, May 18 — can you think of a better way to celebrate International Museum Day? But if you can’t make it then, not to worry. The next $10 admission day is Friday, June 2, and includes entry to the Science After Dark: Ready to Launch evening event, featuring a tour of the Space: An-Out-of-Gravity Experience exhibit. (RVAHub)
There’s a party goin’ on right here: The annual Asian American Celebration is having its 25th shindig. This Saturday, May 20, from 11 am to 7 pm, you and your crew can head to the Greater Richmond Convention Center, where organizers expect up to 10,000 party-goers throughout the day. The celebration will feature performances, cultural and hands-on activities, and more, all in the name of representing and honoring 19 Asian communities. (Richmond magazine)
For next month: Pig & Brew co-owner Lamarr Johnson has plans to open a new spot in Manchester next month. His next concept, Red Hibachi & Beer, will be a fast-casual place with the quality of a sit-down restaurant and some West Coast-style flair. The eatery’s menu will focus on bowls of fried rice, veggies, and meats with about a half-dozen sauces to top them off. (Richmond BizSense)
A place on the river: The James River Association announced plans for the James A. Buzzard River Education Center. Situated on RVA’s historic riverfront (but of course), the space will act as a center of activity for environmental education, “connecting students and the region with the river and advancing our vision of a fully healthy river supporting thriving communities.” The center’s namesake is a former JRA board chairman who advocated tirelessly for the James River and youth environmental education.
