Happy Wednesday!

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, and now —way more than ev — we owe our educators a big thank you. So, THANK YOU all for everything you do!

Here are a few ways some of our favorite local businesses are showing their support for our schoolmasters:

And, you know, Grit Coffee opened its Richmond location in Scott’s Addition. What teacher DOESN’T need a little caffeine in his or her life? Treat your faves to a cup of Joe! (Treat yourself, too. It’s Wednesday, after all — that’s as good a reason as any.)

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including an interesting read about our local healthcare professionals, another outdoor concert to check out, a food truck rebrand, and more.

SOCIAL NEWS

The more you grow: Field Floral opened its doors last week! The contemporary floral shop does it all — events (album drops!), weddings, workshops, collabs, contracts, and subscriptions. Pop over to the new Arts District spot from 11 am to 6 pm any day, or peruse its gorg website and look up to see 15 minutes passed while you were supposed to be working on the Weekly Insider — or, like, whatever. (Instagram)

Add this to your TBR: Richmond magazine pulled together an interesting piece that caught our eyes — Top Docs 2023. In the pub’s words, “Meet four innovators working to advance cancer treatment, tour VCU’s new Children’s Tower, and explore the promise of ketamine in treating mood disorders, plus 492 top medical pros, as chosen by their peers.” While we’re thanking teachers, our thanks to all the healthcare professionals out there, too! (Richmond magazine)

How to support women in RVA: Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build project returns this spring with another round of opps in May and June for volunteers to help build houses in the River City, many of which will become homes to single mothers giving their children safe places to call their own. While the project emphasizes empowering women to help build and change the lives of woman home-buyers, everyone is invited to join the mission! And if you’re looking for other ways to support, Habitat for Humanity is also hosting a comedy show this Friday, May 12, at SB’s Main Street Love Shack. Tickets are 25 bucks and proceeds go to the build. (Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity)

Save the date(s): The James River Yarn Crawl kicks off this Friday, May 12, and runs through Saturday, May 20. The days-long event will feature five local shops (we can’t choose the cutest-sounding one, by the way. Dances with Wool? STOP!) putting on in-person and virtual events, giveaways, and prizes. (James River Yarn Crawl)

The mother of all tours: The 2023 Museum District Association’s Mother’s Day House and Garden Tour happens this Sunday, May 14 (but ofc). Take the mother figure(s) in your life and tour some of Richmond’s most beautiful and historic homes, gardens, and institutions. Tickets start at $25, and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture will serve as the hospitality center, providing tour guidebooks, refreshments, and restrooms. (Museum District)

In Twitter updates: Venture Richmond reported the Canal Walk substation staircase project is complete, and the Library of Virginia is looking for volunteers today, Wednesday, May 10, to virtually (~make history and~) transcribe handwritten pages and historical newspapers. (Twitter, Twitter)

Sweet symphony: The Richmond Symphony and Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia is bringing another outdoor concert to the city. Richmond Symphony Big Tent, held at Abner Clay Park in Jackson Ward, happens Saturday, May 27, at 7 pm. Bring the fam, bring your pups, and enjoy the beautiful music of Florence Price, Joseph Bologne, and Virginia native Adolphus Hailstork. (RVAHub)
