SOCIAL NEWS

MA in VA: Carytown Exchange officially welcomed Burtons Grill & Bar to the neighborhood at the start of this week. The Massachusetts-based restaurant has many locations along the East Coast and is helmed by CEO and President John Haggai, a long-time Richmonder and co-founder of Tazza Kitchen. The spot serves lots of New England-inspired eats – lobster rolls and jumbo lump blue crab cakes, to name just a couple – and offers a “Virginia in summer feel” in atmosphere. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

It’s in the cards: Did you catch this article about the tarot scene in Richmond? Writer Taylor Pilkington takes us through the experience of a reading at Aquarian Bookshop, the increase in tarot popularity (and decrease in tarot stigma), and where else in Richmond you can delve into tarot reading. We loved Taylor’s info and overall take on the practice and are def adding “tarot reading” to our summer bucket list. Do you dare? Could be a great way to beat the heat, you know? (Richmond magazine)

Good cause, good food, and good drinks: The Positive Vibe Foundation is launching Positively Delicious, a “tasting celebration” meant to raise funds for the org that supports, through mentoring and job training, young adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. The fundraiser happens on Saturday, July 15, and each of the 300 available tickets includes craft cocktails, wine, sips from Garden Grove Brewing & Urban Winery, and small plates. It’s one of the city’s largest ticketed dining events in recent years. (Richmond magazine)

If you could use $20,000: This fall, ICA at VCU is launching its Common Prize – “a new annual award recognizing artists, collectives, curators, educators, and writers whose work centers on contemporary art as a site of learning.” The prize will go to two international winners (individual or group), selected by a rotating international committee. Each awardee will earn $20,000 and be invited to reside in Richmond for a short stint. (RVAHub)

Someone check on Mary Roach: Virginia Repertory Theatre is putting on a show for all you Carole King fans. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical runs from June 23 through August 6 at the November Theatre, and tickets cost between $39 and $69. “[T]he production follows [King’s] rise from songwriter to successful solo act and the partnerships and relationships she navigates along the way.” Save yourself a seat here. (Richmond magazine)

On a serious note: Look, it’s been a rough [insert very long amount of time here] that we’ve seemed to experience the gun control issue in our country worsen and worsen. We can’t stand it or stand for it, and the Richmond chapter of Moms Demand Action is hosting a virtual event tonight, June 21, to “identify solutions and a course of action to help address the persistence of gun violence in the greater Richmond community and statewide.” Grab a drink, log on, listen up, and speak out.
