Happy Wednesday!

Summer is laying it on thick these days, right? It’s sticky, it’s summer storm-y, it’s almost giving: Can we carve pumpkins, yet?

Almost.

But not quite.

My neighborhood threw a block party over the weekend, complete with kiddie pools and burgers galore, and I threw a 12-pack of Starr Hill’s seasonal offerings on ice for the day. I’m very much planning to grab another – it was so popular! The Sun Burn summer ale (easy-drinking, light and refreshing, tangy citrus) and the Rio margarita gose (freshness, crispness, zesty lime, touch of salt and sweetness) were, by far, my favorite, but we’ve still got a solid two months before fall gets here – I have time to finalize my assessment. And I think I’ll bring the crew home this weekend for my next round of taste tests.

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including Barbie and Oppenheimer treats, another one from the Lindsey Food Group, the word "octogenarian" used in a sentence, and more.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Slavery Reconciliation Statue: This 15-foot, half-ton bronze sculpture stands at 15th St and E Main St, as part of the Richmond Slave Trail, which raises awareness and educates the public about Richmond’s role in the slave trade. The piece symbolizes “apologies for slavery issued by officials in Liverpool, England, and Benin in West Africa.”

SOCIAL NEWS

We’re getting a kick out of this: Richmond is re-entering the USL W League in the 2024 season! Richmond Kickers Destiny was part of the league from 2005 to 2009, so this new and exciting development will mark the first time the River City has competed in a pre-professional women’s league in 15 years. Said Richmond Kickers’ Chairman and CEO Rob Ukrop, “We hope our team will provide inspiration for the next generation of young girls to aspire to the next levels in Richmond and beyond.” We love (and can’t wait!) to see it. (Richmond Kickers)

Somewhere, Leslie Knope is smiling: “The view that named Richmond” is officially protected green space. The Conservation Fund, Capital Region Land Conservancy, and City of Richmond announced earlier this week that four acres of the riverfront situated along Dock St will now be permanently conserved, allowing public access to the riverfront along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail and allowing the last piece of the Virginia Capital Trail to be moved off the busy street and onto the waterfront. (Capital Region Land Conservancy)

Hi, Barbenheimer!: Hiiighly anticipated summer films Barbie and Oppenheimer are set to release this weekend, and everywhere you look, peeps are getting in on the celebratory action. Style Weekly published this extremely this extremely fun piece imagining a River City Barbie (“[...W]e we wondered what would happen if the fashion doll spent a weekend in Richmond?”); Scoop is dishing out confetti with pink macarons and decadent vegan dark chocolate; and Black Lodge is serving Barbie, Oppenheimer, and The KENd of Days cocktails. (Style Weekly, Instagram, Instagram)

How do the Lindseys take their coffee?: Restaurateurs Mike Lindsey and Kimberly Love-Lindsey — of the Lindsey Food Group — are at it again, and this time, they’re bringing an event space to Richmond. In the coming weeks, the brains behind Buttermilk and Honey, Lillie Pearl, Jubilee, and more, will open Red Bird Social, a 5,400-square-foot venue meant for private parties, pop-ups, and everything in between. The spot allows for up to 200 guests, two levels of space, and a stage for live music or a DJ, so if you’re on deck to plan an upcoming celebration, this could be your digs. (Richmond magazine)

A person who is from 80 to 89 years old: Richmonder, octogenarian, and abstract painter Julie Plunkett Fritz has published a book of poetry. Inspired by the beautiful vistas and landscapes she’s created on paper while out in her backyard studio, Julie has written poems, on and off, for 20 years, as well. She’s created about 150 total and decided to pull more than 50 of them together in a book — Twinings: Poems at Eighty, published by Richmond-based Brandylane Publishers. One of our favorite notes she makes about the work: “‘I hope that it’s sort of an affirmation of … women, older women,’ she says. ‘I love that phrase ‘older women’ … because it takes a lot of doing to become an older woman. I hope they feel that they are valued. That’s the most important thing to me — that they’re not diminished by being old.’” (Richmond magazine)
