RICHMONDER TO KNOW
The Iron Dog: If you caught our 10 WAYS TO CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN IN RICHMOND (WITHOUT THE JUMP SCARE), you saw that we recommend a walk through Hollywood Cemetery this time of year (but of course!). The beautiful and historical Richmond icon spans 135 acres of valleys, hills, and stately trees, including a few must-see items — like the Iron Dog. The cast-iron statue guards the grave of a little girl who died in 1862. While there’s lots of lore around how the dog found its way to Hollywood Cemetery, the most popular theory is that it was moved there to avoid being melted into bullets during the Civil War.

SOCIAL NEWS
Who run the world?: Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Greater Richmond celebrates its tenth anniversary at Common House this Thursday, October 26! Tickets to the event — Limitless Potential — will get you cocktails, appetizers, and networking opps, followed by an inspiring all-female panel conversation featuring Aliyah Hoye, Adrienne Wright, Faby Helme, Jay Ell Alexander, Keira D'Amato, and others. Proceeds from the shindig help provide scholarships to girls who can benefit from the amazing org’s program. BTW: Not familiar with this group? Girls on the Run provides a space for young Richmonders to enjoy fun, interactive lessons and, in turn, enhance their social, emotional, and physical skills to successfully navigate life experiences. Get involved and sign up your kiddo(s), tell a friend about the company, coach a team, volunteer at a 5K, attend an event, or make a financial donation. (Girls on the Run Greater Richmond)
It’s hammer time: The site for the incoming downtown amphitheater is officially in the works. The 7,500-capacity venue is set to open in the spring of 2025, situated between Tredegar and a portion of the Kanawha Canal, with plans for “a temporary stockpile site for soil and parking areas downhill from Second Street, and a route for equipment deliveries and laydowns around the Tredegar complex.” The construction crew has placed fencing poles along the border of the amphitheater site to kick things off. (Richmond BizSense)
Speaking of breaking ground: The construction crew on another local build — Henrico County’s portion of the 43-mile Fall Line trail — has also been busy recently. Sports Backers, who is the lead advocacy org for the project, had this to say about its latest development: “We’re so excited to have been a part of the groundbreaking of Henrico County’s portion of the 43-mile Fall Line trail today. As the lead advocacy organization for the project, seeing it come to fruition has been amazing. We can’t wait to see all the economic benefits reaped from the trail, and how it will increase the quality of life for all throughout our region. We are also thrilled to announce our new office space along the Henrico trailhead at the former Bank of America building on Lakeside Avenue.” (Press Release)
A heap of positive news: Around this time last year, Richmond set up compost bins at libraries, parks, community gardens, and businesses around the city. Now, as VPM reports, the Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department confirms that the movement has had success. “On average, [i]t diverts more than 3,000 pounds of organic material each week from Richmond’s waste stream, while also starting conversations about alternative ways the city can use resident’s trash.” (VPM)
A trendspotting appe-teaser: Our November edition of The Trendspotter is on the horizon, but some updates we’ve scoped out are too mouth-watering to keep to ourselves much longer. ICYMI:
Bonchon is coming back to Richmond, operating out of ghost kitchen Richmond Eats.
Virginia Beach native Aloha Hola opened its second spot in Glen Allen, featuring a menu of fast-casual, Hawaiian-inspired eats.
And in “looking ahead” news, Intermission Beer Company is expanding its operations into a restaurant/retail space/brew pub/arcade in June. (WTVR, Aloha Hola, Richmond magazine)
