Ed 281: Holiday Movie Nights, Soft Serve, Early Voting
Powered by Sweet Wynns — enjoy five bucks off your next ice cream workshop with code NOVEMBER. Book here; promo ends this Sunday!
Hi!
If you can even believe it, we’ve made it to NOVEMBER. One minute, I’m eating a handful of bite-size Twix for dinner; the next minute, I’m wondering how early is too early to throw on The Grinch. But whether you’re an ASAP-holiday celebrator or not, the end of October means we’ve got another round of things we’ve been way loving, and spoiler alert: We’re going to remind you to and insist that you check out Garden Glow if you haven’t already.
Keep scrolling for that and RVA’s latest social news, including Mexican food, gelato shop, brewery closing, and more.
THINGS WE’RE *WAY* LOVING THIS MONTH
Paige:
Pappy's Pumpkin Pie from Hardywood: I rarely drink beer but love a seasonal brew. Pappy's Pumpkin Pie tastes like a sweet, delicious homemade pumpkin pie in a glass.
Frosted Animal Cookie from Scoop: This particular flavor was voted by Scoop fans as one of the best in their flavor tournament back in March. It begins as a normal animal cracker and is "frosted" right before your eyes! It's literal nostalgia ‘til the last bite!
Kelsey:
Garden Glow: This was my first year checking out Garden Glow IRL, and let me know you what — it’s SO worth the hype. A perfect stroll through the massive (and beautifully glowing) Maymont campus, complete with spots to scoop up hot chocolate and glow sticks before or after you mosey around.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW
Red Pen Virtual Assistants: It’s no secret that our teachers are some of society’s biggest heroes, and Melissa Logan Thurston, a former educator, knows that best. Richmond mag recently featured her biz Red Pen Virtual Assistants, “a company that connects busy professionals with current and retired teachers ready to use their classroom skills in the business world.”
THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
You can have your space: GRTC is bringing you a little more elbow room in the future. The org has plans in the works for new, larger buses added to the Pulse line. Think: “four 60-foot-long articulated buses [added] to the fleet dedicated to the Pulse, which runs from Rocketts Landing in Richmond to Willow Lawn in Henrico County.” (Richmond BizSense)
The Day of the Dead: While you wait to hop in line for Miracle on Cary, enjoy spooky season a little bit longer and head to Bar Muertos. The pop-up bar is another concept from The Jasper, celebrating Mexican culture, spirits, and flavors. TBT El Gallo joins the party this time around, and as always, the hot spot will donate a portion of its proceeds to @immfamtogether, a nonprofit that helps reunite and support families separated at the US-Mexico border. (Instagram)
Holy guacamole!: The Fan is welcoming two new taquerias in the coming weeks. Juan More Taco started as a Fredericksburg food truck and will serve a Honduras-inspired menu, including tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, and corn cakes, “cornbread patties stuffed with cheese, a protein of choice, and topped with guacamole and pico de gallo.” Fewer details are available for spot number two, Nuevo Mexico, but the restaurants are neighbors, making for an easy Mexican food bang-bang when the time comes. (Richmond BizSense)
And for dessert: Davvero Gelato Shop is opening in Lakeside. The vegan-friendly spot for seasonal treats and nut spreads is setting up shop next spring. But in the meantime, you can keep your eyes on Insta for grand opening updates and pop-up happenings. (Instagram)
ICYMI: At the start of this week, Mr. Monopoly, Richmond businesses, community and nonprofit leaders, and representatives from Top Trumps USA celebrated the release of Richmond’s version of the world’s most popular family boardgame, MONOPOLY. One of our contributing writers Andrew Knight attend the event and shared this info with us:
This edition replaces the perennial board game’s Atlantic City squares (from Boardwalk to Park Place) with Richmond cultural sites, historic landmarks, charitable organizations and businesses. It also features customized Community Chest and Chance playing cards to ensure the board is a historic and enduring tribute to Richmond, Virginia.
The game makers announced the city was getting its own edition in March and encouraged the public to send in places they would like to see featured on the board. Spaces then were selected based on longevity, credibility and community service. (Press Release)
Don’t forget to vote!: If you’re planning to vote early, Saturday, November 4, is your last chance before Election Day itself — Tuesday, November 7. BTW, still debating the casino of it all? Richmond Times-Dispatch offers another perspective to consider. (NBC12)
