Ed 304: Samurai Armor, Scott’s Addition Farmers’ Market, Wool Slippers
Hi, hi, hi!
We’re still coming down from the high of all the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k fun over the weekend. Yet again, walkers, runners, and spectators alike delivered on spirit every ~step~ of the way, and it was so great to see everybody go all out for the annual springtime event. Paige already gave you the low-down on social media re: our faves for the Spirit Contest, but I still can’t get over all the signs featuring one-liners like these:
🪧Should I call you an Uber?
🪧Where is everyone going?
🪧Press here [🍄] to power up!
🪧The Tortured Runners Department
TOO cute; I’m already excited for next year. But until then, we’ve got quite a bit to keep you in the loop about — starting with this week’s hot goss.
Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including Brown’s Island updates, where to catch Martha Stewart when she’s in town, two projects breaking ground this week, and more.

SOCIAL NEWS
Some green for some green: Richmond City and Venture Richmond are combining forces to enhance Brown’s Island. RVA and the local-loving marketing agency will put $30 mil toward planting trees, installing BRs, and otherwise gussying up the beloved green space downtown. Official details are still TBD, but the project planners hope to get things started by 2026. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Where to get your next dose of culture: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts debuted its latest exhibition over the weekend, Samurai Armor from the Collection of Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller. The display features “an awe-inspiring look at Japan’s exquisitely crafted samurai armor,” including full suits of armor and an array of weapons, helmets, masks, horse accessories, woodblock prints, and textiles. Stop by anytime between now and August 4 to peruse. (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts)
Get your shopping list ready: Scott’s Addition is welcoming a new farmers’ market this spring. The Workshop, a majorly gorg and spacious event venue at 1400 Mactavish Ave, will host local vendors, from artisans to food trucks. Lettuce celebrate: Fat Kid Sandwiches is moving into the downtown area. The former resident at Hatch Local Food Hall will be bringing its cheesesteaks and subs to the new space at 1110 East Main St, and you can expect breakfast sandwiches and brunch offerings, as well as some grab-and-go options, like cold subs, salads, sides, and desserts. An opening date is still in the works, but the crew hopes to be up and running by the end of the summer. (Instagram)
Groundbreaking news: No, literally! Our friends at Sports Backers helped celebrate the start of construction in Ashland along a 4.8-mile stretch of the Fall Line trail. Here’s just a bit of what the nonprofit had to say about the development:
“A regional partnership including Hanover and Henrico counties and the Town of Ashland held a ceremonial groundbreaking today in Ashland to celebrate the start of construction along a 4.8-mile portion of the 43-mile Fall Line trail. The section, currently called Design-Build Phase 1, will extend the northernmost existing completed section of the Ashland section of the trail to Woodman Road in Henrico. This is the first major construction phase of the Fall Line to be administered by Virginia Department of Transportation. It will be part of the northern half of the trail expected to be completed by 2026. Over the next year, phases comprising 20 miles of the trail will be under construction, with all 43 miles expected to be completed by 2030.” (Press Release)
*More* groundbreaking news: Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is gaining a little more elbow room for its blooms. The Lakeside landmark breaks ground this week on its $13-mil expansion, which will almost double the size of the conservatory, add more than seven additional acres of gardens, and include another lake on campus.
