Featured Insta Image of the Week by: @jahrlowry

Hey there!

Happy spring break to those who celebrate this week. As you may have seen on Insta, my fam and I enjoyed the weekend’s hot temps at Kings Dominion’s opening day. I grew up going to KD when I was a kid (see: panicking after they secured my belt on Anaconda), so it’s always nice when this time of year comes around again and we can catch a Charlie Brown sighting or two while the kiddos enjoy that and some other fun on Planet Snoopy.

FYI, the park’s open all this week from 11 am to 7, 8, or 9 pm, depending on which day you want to visit, and it looks to be running a sale on the Silver Pass now through April 7 — 95 bucks for unlimited visits and free parking through Labor Day. Even for a coaster-phobic person like myself, that’s a great deal for a spring and summer full of sunny adventures.

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including style inspo for the Squirrels home opener, gluten-free baked goods, another concept from the brains behind Grisette, and more.

SOCIAL NEWS

What to wear on opening weekend for the Richmond Flying Squirrels: Sun & Selene is joining forces with RVA’s MiLB team and launching its Baseball Szn Spring Style Edit. To celebrate, with the purchase of anything in store, the jeweler is giving away two tickets to a game happening this weekend, and, now through Friday, April 4, they’ll be running an Instagram giveaway where followers can win free game tickets, too. Keep your eyes peeled on social media while you figure out which hoops will go best with your game-day ‘fit. FWIW, we’re big fans of The Naked Hoops and Equator cuff earrings. (Press Release)

Baking Richmond a better place: Kickshaws has plans to set up a storefront in the mixed-use space at Samis Grotto Temple at 4028 MacArthur Ave. While it’s a Fredericksburg staple, the bakeshop’s owner, Kathy Paz-Craddock, has plenty of ties to Richmond, as well, having spent time at VCU as an art student and suppling Kickshaws baked goods to other local spots like Ellwood Thompson’s and Good Foods Grocery. Kathy, who, along with her son, has celiac disease, is particularly passionate about crafting delicious gluten-free, vegan, and allergen-friendly baked goods and plans to offer everything from breads and bagels to cookies and cakes, ensuring that other Richmonders with dietary restrictions don't miss out on such tasty treats. Look for an opening date on the calendar in June. (Richmond BizSense)

Keep the baking puns ~rolling~. Because Petit Four is the newest addition coming to us from the brains behind Grisette, Jardin, and Beaucoup. The team made the announcement just last week, noting that the charming little bakeshop was born from a longtime dream; owner Donnie Glass wanted a space where the crew could bake without the constraints of restaurant equipment, and after years of planning, the vision finally came to life. As they get a feel for things, on Saturdays from 9 am until sell-out, you can head to the side door of the bakery located on the Lombardy St side of the Jardin patio and snag their much-loved sourdough breads, pastries, and coffee. Folks who brunch, this one’s for you. The Sassy Biscuit, which originated in Montana, is bringing its breakfast-y magic to our city. Set to open in July on Hull St — in the former Butterbean Market & Café space — Sassy's will offer a delightful twist on classic brunch fare, centering around the owner’s unique biscuit dough recipe, transforming it into pancakes, waffles, and more. At Sassy’s, everything from hot sauces to sausages is made in-house, ensuring an “elevated but approachable” dining experience. So, yes, we’ll see you in line. (Richmond BizSense)

We’ll def need some Second Opinions. Second Bottle recently announced its latest series, Second Opinions, a culture club of sorts aiming to foster a vibrant community where wine enthusiasts can gather, share, and deepen their appreciation for vino. The regular gatherings will provide a welcoming space for both novices and connoisseurs to sip diverse wine selections and engage in lively discussions. As is the trend at this beloved Church Hill bottle shop, it's all about building connections and expanding horizons in a relaxed, communal setting. Tickets for the kick-off event this week sold out quickly, but the next one is happening at the end of April, if you’re interested in getting on the list. (Style Weekly)

Speaking of Church Hill goings-on, you might’ve recently noticed an uptick in the area’s political movements and discussions, given all that’s been happening nationally and beyond. In Church Hill last weekend, attendees of the St. John’s Church 250th anniversary reenactment of Patrick Henry's iconic Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death speech — like, ahem, Governor Glenn Youngkin — also witnessed protesters outside the church, gathering with signs declaring, “We resisted King George. We will resist Trump,” drawing parallels between the colonial fight for freedom and contemporary political movements. Meanwhile, Virginia Museum of History & Culture’s just-opened exhibition, Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation, encourages visitors to reflect on their personal interpretations of freedom and their roles in its evolution. The exhibit also confronts the contradictions of Virginia's revolutionary era, particularly regarding slavery, given that Patrick Henry's impassioned calls for freedom stood in stark contrast to the realities of enslaved individuals, underscoring the complexities and hypocrisies embedded in the nation's founding. I.e., it’s as good a time as ever to educate yourself. (RVA Mag)
