Ed 73: fresh squeezed, a little boozy, + October celebrations
This edition of The Weekly Insider is proudly brought to you by Vitality Float Spa!
Hey there!
Welcome to the first official Weekly Insider on our new site (a tad late, but it wouldn’t really be the first one if we didn’t experience some kind of technical difficulty right?! 🤣 ) We hope you’ve been exploring guides, checking out member perks, and adding experiences to your calendar. This week we’re sharing the bounty of Fall events, latest in food and drink news, and of course a giveaway. Plus we welcome 37 new members! Let’s dive right in…
THE LATEST:
FOOD + DRINK NEWS
The Juice Laundry is slated to open this week in the River Road Shopping Center! If you need to catch up here’s the recap: Charlottesville-based company, The Juice Laundry, is being opened by a local Richmonder serving juice, salads, acai bowls, and more.
Another juice bar is sprouting in Richmond and this time in Northside! Ms. Bee’s Juice Bar will serve all natural cold press juice along with soup, salad, smoothies, and tea. Ms. Bee’s will open at 114 W Brookland Park Boulevard across from Scrap RVA and just down the street from Black Hand Coffee’s Northside location. (Richmond Mag)
Speaking of Black Hand Coffee, they shared this cryptic post on Instagram three weeks ago hinting a big change is coming to their Northside location. And before you panic, we can confirm they are not closing. Our best guesses? Maybe an extended breakfast offering or perhaps they are picking up an ABC license. They recently collaborated with Hardywood and Charlottesville-based Snowing in Space to help create some of Hardywood’s fall favorites like Kentucky Christmas Morning so they have ABVs on the brain. We’ll have to wait and see!
In continued juice news (we are moving on soon I promise) ICYMI, last week the popular North End Juice Co. announced a Church Hill location! They will join 3S Yoga at the corner of Jefferson Ave and N 24th St, both occupying the first floor. Four apartments make up the second floor and should be completed soon, just a heads up if you’re in the market for a new spot.
The best fried chicken sandwich in Richmond, according to those polled by Karri Peifer at Richmond Times-Dispatch, was a dead tie between LOWCO Eatery Food Truck and Hot Chick. LOWCO’s original fried chicken sandwich is served with LOWCO sauce and a house pickle on a buttered brioche bun while Hot Chick’s “Hot Chick” is served Nashville-style (spicy) with dill pickles, ranch, and ranch slaw. The other contenders including Lunch and Supper, Saison Market, Cobra Cabana, Laura Lees, and the recently shuttered Mean Bird didn’t even come close. LOWCO will be at Veil Brewing this Friday 4-9pm and Hot Chick is open 11am-11pm on Friday and 11am-3pm on Saturday and Sunday - you know, just in case. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Kahlos Taqueria and Bar has seemingly been on the cusp of opening for a long time but issues with permitting at the city continues to hold them up. Once open, Kahlos will serve tacos, margaritas, churros and more at their location on Jessamine Street in Church Hill. Seating will include both indoor and outdoor with their patio being pet-friendly. Fingers crossed they will open soon!
Cabo becomes Pink Flamingo according to this Richmond BizSense article. Our friends made the same connection when news first broke, mistakenly believing the popular Virginia Tech spot, Cabo Fish Taco, was coming to Richmond. Look for Pink Flamingo to open in just a few weeks. (Richmond BizSense)
Belle Isle’s canned cocktails officially launched this week with three flavor options: Ruby Red & Soda (grapefruit with a hint of lime), Blood Orange & Soda, and Shine & Soda - essentially a moonshine and club. So far we’ve tried the Ruby Red and Blood Orange and we both preferred the Ruby Red though it should be noted we generally prefer grapefruit over orange-flavored anything. Find out where to snag some here.
BIG HAPPENINGS
The annual celebration of arts and culture in Richmond and the Tri-Cities has officially begun! Artober is a month-long event aiming to bring art and culture way beyond a stage or a gallery. Created by CultureWorks, Artober inspires and cultivates world-class arts and culture putting Richmond on the map as a national destination! Explore events including gallery exhibits, film presentations, live art demos, festivals including Hopewell Arts Fest and Robinson Theater Fall Fest, and so much more! Check out the full calendar of events and make plans!
Harvest Party is coming up on October 19 and there are several ways to celebrate! As the leaves begin to change and harvest comes to a close, there is no better time to take in the breathtaking views of Virginia’s wine country. October is Virginia Wine month and each year, on October 19, the Harvest Party is celebrated - a day for the Commonwealth to come together to toast the richness of our region. You can participate simply by throwing your own Harvest Party, putting your favorite local foods and wines at the center of your feast. It’s like Friendsgiving but with more wine (or if your Friendsgiving is anything like ours it is probably the same amount). If you don’t feel like hosting, a number of Virginia wineries and restaurants are participating.
