Hey there!

Good morning to everyone but especially to mother nature who finally got it together. The next few weekends look incredible for a hike around the James River Park Systems, a bike ride through our parks, or just a stroll around the neighborhood. Lets get right to it…

FOOD + DRINK NEWS

The wizarding world of Cary Potter returns to Carytown Cupcakes! For a few days each year Carytown Cupcakes is transformed into the magical world of Harry Potter; shop through Diagon Alley, get lost in the Forbidden forest, attend book readings, trivia and bingo, a horcrucx hunt and more. And most importantly, there will be plenty of Cary Potter cupcake flavors including butterbeer, dementor’s kiss, golden snitch, polyjuice potion and more. Pre-orders are open and the celebration takes Monday, October 21 through Sunday, November 3.

Sure everyone is really excited about the Ukrop’s food hall being built at the corner of Horsepen Road and Patterson Avenue but the real question is what do you do until it opens Fall 2020? If you’ve ever experienced the magic that is Ukrop’s breakfast pizza and you’ve been feigning since they’ve disappeared from area grocery stores, then listen now and listen good: you can buy Ukrop’s breakfast pizza (and cakes, and catering platters, and even Thanksgiving dinner) on their website. All you do is order ahead and pick-up at 2026 Westmoreland Street, behind Richmond Ford on Broad Street. So don’t be blue that the food hall is a year away from opening, we’re all about solutions here. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

The Fall menu at Front Porch Cafe has us seriously drooling. ICYMI, we shared some of their items on the ‘gram including a butternut squash bisque, everything bagel quiche, and pumpkin spice waffles. My goal is to go work from there long enough to eat breakfast and lunch so I can try all the things. Would it make more sense to just bring a friend and share everything? Yes. Are people reasonable when they are hungry? No. If you pop in and see me there with multiple plates in front of me just say hi and don’t make it weird.

Capital Market Cafe is now open on Main Street! (Not to be confused with Capital One Cafe.) Located in the former Black Swan Books, on the corner sandwiched between Helen’s and BRUNCH, Capital Market Cafe is open daily from 6am til 12:30am Sunday through Wednesday and til 3am Thursday through Saturday. The market is big and offers fresh fruits and vegetables, coffee and espresso, beer and wine, grocery staples like jarred sauce and pasta, mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly and more, plus cheese, sandwiches, and ice cream. A Jewish bakery will open in 6 months in Carver so if you’ve been craving babka and challah, mark your calendar! Claudia’s Bake Shop will also serve cookies, cakes, coffee cinnamon buns and more. Who doesn’t love baked goods? (Richmond Bizsense)

Lakeside got a little more caffeinated last week! Bright Spot Coffee opened last Friday but not before changing ownership prior to opening their doors. @brightspotcoffee is now @brightspotcoffeerva and their website is currently down. If you’ve been following along since the beginning, Eli and his wife Remy founded Bright Spot in 2018, popping up around town to sell coffee beans. They announced a brick and mortar location in April and have been sharing updates on the build out but according to this social media post, ownership changed hands. We hope Eli’s bright personality will continue to be involved but we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, you can swing by the new shop and grab a cup of coffee!

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

“This is a city with energy and momentum” writes Worth.com about Richmond. In their article “10 Cities to Watch in 2020”, the restaurant scene, thriving outdoor community, healthy business community, noteworthy cultural institutions, and abundance of young people are all cited as reasons why Richmond is making a bid for prominence in 2020. Neighboring city, Charlotte, NC., also made the list as well as Boulder, CO., Greensville, SC., Little Rock AR., Milwaukee WI., Montgomery, AL., Philadelphia, PA., Providence, RI., and Sacramento CA. Worth.com also gave recognition to VCU, UR, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the new Civil War Museum.

HAPPENINGS

The Women’s Monument was unveiled Monday at the Capital Square in Downtown Richmond! It is the nation’s first monument on the grounds of any state capital that showcases the full range of achievements and contributions made by remarkable women in a variety of fields and endeavors. In addition to seven bronze statues, the monument includes a Wall of Honor with the names of 230 notable women inscribed and room for more. There are twelve statues planned in total and the remaining will be added as funding becomes available.
