Hey there!

It’s me, Alicia, the new editor that The Richmond Experience introduced last week! I’m so excited to join Sam and Sean as we continue to hunt for the best things to eat, drink, see, and experience around RVA so we can share it all with you.

Speaking of which, this Weekly Insider is packed to the brim with restaurants that have reopened, craft booze pick-up and delivery updates, and virtual events (plus some non-virtual, real-life events! Remember those?) to keep you anything but bored in the coming week.

We also put together some awesome new city guides about to-go mimosas you can order to celebrate National Mimosa Day on Saturday, local spots planning to open up their patios this weekend as we enter phase one of reopening Virginia, and more.

On to this week’s social news…

SOCIAL NEWS

The South of the James Farmers Market is moving. Colleen Curran at the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that the market was relocated to Northside’s Bryan Park due to COVID-19 health concerns in Forest Hill. If you’re looking to visit for drive-thru (open 8 - 9:45 am) or walk-in service (10 am - 12 pm), just remember a. that visitors are required to wear face masks, and b. that you’ll need to pre-order by contacting vendors directly! You can find a list of vendors here.

The Birds have migrated back to Richmond for springtime. You might have noticed that Bird electric scooters have slowly been returning to our city streets over the past few weeks. According to Jack Jacobs at Richmond BizSense, Bird intends to put “expanded sanitation practices” in practice as they continue to roll out more scooters here in RVA.

Looking to replenish your alcohol supply? Work For Your Beer created this guide to all the craft booze pick-up and delivery options in the greater Richmond area, so know exactly where to get your beer, wine, cider, or spirits of choice.

Pizza lovers, get excited: People’s Pie officially opened in Scott’s Addition. They’re offering 18” round pies and 10” x 14” Detroit Pizzas, along with Water Ranch, their “chef’s soon to be world famous dipping sauce.” Ordering starts at 11 am each day, and curbside pick-up is available from 4 - 8 pm Wednesday - Saturday.

More of our favorite restaurants have re-opened, too! In the past week, Lunch or Supper re-opened for take-out and delivery, as did Metzger Bar & Butchery. The Continental Westhampton also re-opened for curbside pick-up.

We all scream for (soft serve) ice cream. Anthony’s on the Hill is now offering vanilla, chocolate, and vanilla-chocolate swirl soft serve ice cream. With or without sprinkles. But who doesn’t want sprinkles?! They’re open Tuesday - Sunday, 5 - 9 pm for take-out.

Drive-thru zoo? Don’t mind if we do! The Metro Richmond Zoo is now offering Drive-Thru Tours Monday - Saturday, 9:30 am - 5 pm. The tour is about an hour long, and you can even play the zoo’s narration from your smartphone over your car’s Bluetooth/AUX connection. Can you imagine seeing those cute little penguins in your rearview mirror?

Speaking of venturing out of the house for an adventure, how about a scavenger hunt? River City Food Tours is now offering neighborhood scavenger hunts, which offer about 2-3 hours of outdoor entertainment (but can be done in several chunks, if all at once doesn’t work for your schedule). So far, they’ve rolled out games for Church Hill and the Museum District. TBD on which other ‘hoods are to come!

Still not comfortable leaving the house yet? No worries, you can bring the activity to you. If you’re looking to get your hands dirty, literally, consider ordering a Hand Building From Home kit from Hand / Thrown. The physical kit comes with virtual tutorials that will walk you step by step through basic techniques, and even teach you how to handbuild a mug and cup by the time you’re done.

Or opt for virtual tours of the local attractions we’d usually be visiting IRL. You can find virtual visits to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, the VMFA, and even King’s Dominion, if you’re in the mood to digitally ride a roller coaster.

HAPPENINGS

Get creative from home. CreativeMornings/Richmond will host this month’s gathering virtually (or, as the registration puts it, at your home on 123 Wash Your Hands Road) on Friday, May 15 at 8:30 am. Weekly Giveaway

Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop

Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop opened its doors in Scott’s Addition location at the end of 2019. While we can’t wait until we’re able to gather together at their rooftop bar once again, for now we’re enjoying their brews at home with pick-up and delivery orders.

Starr Hill just released their Summer Tour Variety Pack (a 12-pack of beers including a hoppy blonde ale, a pineapple gose, a golden ale, and a juicy IPA) for $16.99 — so this week, we’re giving away a gift card to Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop in precisely that amount so you can get one for yourself!

TO ENTER: Let us know your favorite style of beer! IPAs, sour beers, lagers… Whatever your go-to brew is, we want to know.

Last week:  Congratulations to Lakshmi R. for being our giveaway winner of the week!  We have no doubt you will enjoy your  goodies from Lammar Marie’s Gourmet Popcorn.
