Ed 105: Coffee News, Radio Buzz, Ballpark Bites
This edition of the Weekly Insider is proudly brought to you by Scout & Molly’s Boutique.
Hey there! Alicia here 👋
I’m noticing a trend here at RVAx. Sam, Sean, and I will have the best of intentions in setting up a content calendar for the month ahead of time.
Then something exciting or delicious will catch our eye on Instagram, and BOOM, those initial ideas are tossed aside for tastier topics — like this week’s round-up of seasonal drink releases around RVA, or our guide to the best ways to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend while still social distancing. And hey, that’s certainly not a bad thing! If we’re excited about it, we’re hoping you will be, too.
But as we work to hone our content strategy, we want to know what kind of city guides YOU want to see from us. And what local businesses YOU’D like to see us partnering with on things like member perks and giveaways.
So if you have two minutes to take this quick survey, we’d love to hear your thoughts!
Now, let’s talk about this week’s need-to-know social news…
THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
A beloved Charlottesville coffee roaster is preparing to open a new location in Jackson Ward. Mike Platania at Richmond BizSense reported that Mudhouse Coffee Roasters will soon open a cafe at 418 W. Broad St. The couple-owned company led by John and Lynelle Lawrence already has three locations in C-Ville as well as one in Crozet, and they said Richmond “seemed like a natural transition.” This new location will have a full coffee bar (using beans roasted in the Charlottesville locations) as well as pastries.
Speaking of coffee, Blanchard’s is now offering 64 oz. "bags” of cold caffeination. Options for pick-up include cold coffee, mocha, latte, and vanilla latte — all brewed, bagged, and ready for your refrigerator. Just pour over ice and enjoy!
And Buskey’s seasonal watermelon rosemary hard cider is back for the summer! The seasonal fan favorite is available for pick-up or delivery in 4-packs for $12, and it pairs perfectly with sunny days on the porch or patio. Keep scrolling for our full guide on local seasonal drink releases to get excited about as summer approaches.
Did you hear Brookland Park Blvd. businesses were featured on NPR? Fuzzy Cactus owner Michael Cipollone, Alma’s RVA owner Sarah Mizer, and barbershop manager and Brookland Park Association president Willie Hilliard discussed their hesitations about re-opening their doors to the public once Richmond is cleared for Phase One. Listen here.
Richmond finally has its own wine subscription box. The fine folks over at the Barrel Thief just announced their new BT Subscription Plans. Each month, they will provide you with a case of 12 bottles, hand picked specifically for you by owner Booth Hardy and wine buyer Diane McMartin. Both are certified sommeliers with over 30 combined years in the wine business, so you know they know what’s good!
Ball games aren’t back just yet, but ballpark food is. The Richmond Flying Squirrels just introduced Funnville Foodie Fridays so you can order your favorite ballpark food and drinks for curbside pickup at The Diamond on Fridays from 11:30am - 5pm. Don’t worry, Squirrely Fries are on the menu.
NATIONAL NEWS
Let’s pat ourselves on the back, because Richmond was just nationally recognized for being an artistic and affordable city! Thrillest recently named Richmond one of the Great American Cities for Creatives (That You Can Actually Afford to Live In), noting that “This Old South town has basically become the Brooklyn of the Southeast.”
