Happy Edition 200, RVAx members! 🎉

We’re beaming over here, as we look back on the rounds of happenings, social news tidbits, Richmonders to know, giveaways, ~and more~ we’ve pulled together and delivered to you on Wednesdays — like that in-the-know friend who loves to download the hot goss at happy hour every week.

That said, we’re in the celebrating mood, so first things first: Your caffeine fix is on us today! We’re teaming up with Whisk and treating members to a hot or iced coffee from the delish downtown bakery (while supplies last). They’ve also generously offered to take 10% off the rest of your order when you stop by today. To redeem either (or each) deal, just tell them you’re a member of The Richmond Experience when you check out, and enjoy!

Now, it wouldn’t be a party if there weren’t a little music, right? You might’ve noticed we like to include some feel-good tunes throughout our content, and that got us thinking, This calls for a playlist. Introducing RVAx Radio: your bop roundup featuring our favorite upbeat ditties. Blast it for your midweek pick-me-up, your commute home, or your weekend party plans — whenever you need a jam sesh. And if you’ve got a song you’ve been loving recently, drop it in the Comments section for us at the bottom of this edition! It’s a living playlist, so we may just play your faves “on the radio.”

Lastly, and speaking of getting your feedback, we’re always looking for ways to get you the most out of your RVAx membership. We’ve added the Comments section on the Insider recently to further open the lines of communication for our little community over here. Feel free to get in there and get chatting: Tell us an RVA something you’re excited about, see if anybody else is going to that thing at that place, or just float an idea for us to consider.

Wowww, okay. That in-the-know friend had a lot to say at the top today. See below for that promised weekly hot goss. And a big THANK YOU for reading, now and always. We’re so, so glad you’re here!

THE LATEST:

NEW-SEASON READY

Spring and summer are lookin’ funn: The Richmond Flying Squirrels are kicking off their 2022 season on Tuesday, April 12, at 6:35 pm. For the last 11 years, tickets for the home opener have sold out (and field-level seating is already sold out), so don’t be squirrelly about this — snag your seats now. Post-game fireworks are on the agenda for a little more opening-night celebration after the final inning. (MiLB)

Hop to it: Ruff Canine Club is hosting an Easter Party for you and your pups on Saturday, April 9. The Easter Bunny will be there from 1 - 4 pm to take pics with pooches, and the event will also feature a caricaturist. If you’re not a club member, you can still attend with a $10 day pass. And if you’re not around that Saturday, don’t fret, pet: Ruff hosts breed meet-ups, and the April calendar is stacked. Your dog(s) must have a pet profile to attend, but pet-free folks are welcome to pull up a chair, order something from the kitchen, and enjoy watching club members’ four-legged friends romp around. IE: Dalmatian meet-up? Don’t mind if we do. (Instagram)

RVA, but make it fashion (week): RVA Fashion Week recently announced that The Exchange, the seven-day event’s own marketplace, will set up shop at Tang & Biscuit for two days for the springtime party. They’ll kick things off on April 25 and 26, featuring “local vendors, awesome designer fashion shows, and dope music.” Tickets are on sale now. (Instagram)

This will have you feeling full: The Krush Wellness Tour is coming to Short Pump. The Reiki Twins — the event’s co-hosts and brand ambassadors for Organic Krush Lifestyle Eatery — will lead “a night of education and healing. Learn how different ingredients affect specific chakras, experience a taste of a Reiki-focused meditation, and gain a deeper understanding of how food is connected to not only physical but also mental health.” The free-to-attend event will feature other inspirational speakers, interactive experiences, and cooking demos, as well. THE EATS & THE ARTS

U of R takes it cheesy: Brittanny Anderson (James Beard Foundation award nominee, Top Chef competitor, local restaurant(s) chef and owner) and Joshua Franklin (Brenner Pass cheesemonger, Cobra Burger co-owner) are teaming up at University of Richmond’s Demo Kitchen for a cheese-tasting workshop this week. The duo (known together as Cave Culture) “will take participants on a journey through cheese,” as they often do via their popular virtual cheese-tasting sessions. Anybody else incredibly hungry now? A boss move: Carena’s Jamaican Grille and Jamaica House restaurant owner, Carena Ives, recently appeared on Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games; won $17,500; and paid her clean-sweep winnings forward to her nearly 60 employees. Crediting them with her success in Richmond since 1994, Carena offered her employees the option to take an all-expense paid trip or a paid week off to spend time with their families. (CBS6 News)

Feeling fancy: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is debuting its newest exhibition this week — Elegance and Wonder: Masterpieces of European Art. The chic collection features “Baroque and Rococo art pieces which will transport you back to the lavishness and luxury of 18th-century Europe.” Museum members got a sneak peek earlier this week, and the exhibit officially opens to the public on Wednesday, March 30. (Instagram)

Edgar Allan ~go~ to this: The Poe Museum and Mending Walls — Richmond muralist Hamilton Glass’s public art project — are collaborating on a silent auction at Gallery5 on Wednesday, March 30. In the summer of 2020, Mending Walls invited artists to create artwork that would adorn the museum and encourage conversation, empathy, and collaboration by way of public art. And now you can own a piece of this project. (Instagram)

Weekly Giveaway

Molly Reeder

This week, we’re giving away an 18” x 24” watercolor painting of Radicchio Variegato di Lusia — giclée-printed on Somerset Velvet archival paper — from Molly Reeder’s Edible Illustration Series.

As Molly beautifully put it when she completed the piece, “The flowering movement and splatters of color rolling across its leaves are pretty similar to the ebb and flow of time, the non-linear messiness of life[…].” A stunning sentiment to reflect an equally stunning painting, and a great way to toast to this transition into a new season — temperature-wise or otherwise.

To enter to win, tell us: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

Last week: Congratulations to last week’s winner, Andrea, for winning our Scoop giveaway! (And pssst, Andrea: We responded to you in Ed 199’s Comments section. Send us an email here to snag your prize!)
