Hi there! 👋

The RVAx team is getting in some much-needed and well-deserved OOO time this week, but we’ve still got news on news for all you Richmonders hanging in the city as you look forward to your beach vacays (🙋‍♀️me, Kelsey, lol).

For starters, it’s National Bike Month, and with April showers in the past(ish), now’s an especially great time to celebrate with a little bit of fresh air. The Richmond Cycling Corps knows how to do just that, and on Monday, May 16, the local nonprofit org is debuting a short film at the Byrd Theatre about the RCC effort to engage, through cycling, with Richmond’s disadvantaged youth.

And if you’re looking for a more immediate fresh-air fix in the meantime, Friday Cheers starts back up this Friday, May 6! The event has been on hiatus since the pandemic hit in 2020, so suffice it to say, we’ll be Cheers-ing to a lot at the end of this week. (Mother Nature, plz cool it with these thunderstorm threats, tho.)

Okay, that seems like a fair enough appetizer to whet the palate. Let’s dig in to the real dish:

WEATHER

Wednesday: Thunderstorms in the aft; high of 84°, low of 58°

Thursday: Partly cloudy; high of 74°, low of 55°

Friday: Thunderstorms; high of 70°, low of 62°

HAPPENINGS

Wednesday, 6:30 - 8 pm: Boozy Bonsai Workshop

Thursday, 6:30 - 7:30 pm: Yoga in the Park

Friday, 6 - 7 pm: Art for Alz

RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Trey McFerren: He’s the owner of CrossFit Addict (which celebrated an anniversary of sorts last month) and a recent competitor in Miami’s Wodapalooza, having qualified for the premier CrossFit festival after placing 8th in the world and securing a Master’s Mens spot to compete.

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including a local burger spot on The Talk, two rooftops to check out, an adult field day, and more.

THE LATEST:

FOOD NEWS

Cobra Burger has The Talk: Church Hill’s de-li-cious burger spot, Cobra Burger, recently visited The Talk to compete in (AND THEN WIN) the daytime talk show’s Food Face-Off. Adam Musselman, Cobra Burger’s co-owner, represented the restaurant and its Cobra-y, shredduce-y, chz-y borger, competing against a Jucy Lucy burger from Matt’s Bar in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (CBS 6)

Pop up to the Quirk Hotel rooftop: All summer, Tuesday through Saturday, you can find the Hueya pop-up on the Quirk Hotel rooftop. The menu will feature the spot’s signature fresh, simple, and flavorful ingredients in dishes like the lamb leg barbacoa and the ceviche. Then, to pair with those delish eats (and more), the hotel’s bar manager “has spun up a new cocktail list with some tequila-focused libations as well.” But if that’s not enough rooftop action for you, New York Deli recently announced the construction on its Rockaway Beach Tiki Bar rooftop is also underway. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Another one: Lillie Pearl owners, Mike Lindsey and Kim Love-Lindsey, are at it again. The restauranteurs have plans to bring their ML Steak Modern Chophouse concept to the former Fatty Smokes location in City Center this September. “‘We’ll make it a fun spin on a steakhouse,’ Lindsey said. ‘It’s a place to have fun, kind of have that adult, sexy vibe to it but still be a place to have a great date night or if a bunch of business guys want to hit town.’” (Richmond BizSense)

The pasta-bilities are endless: Billy Bread and Billy Pie creator, Billy Fallen, is partnering with Ellwood Thompson to offer another delish venture within the walls of the beloved grocery store. Along with Ellwood’s owner Rick Hood and former Dutch & Co. co-owner Caleb Shriver, Fallen’s new Billy Pasta will take over a cafe space in the Carytown grocery store, serving both hot dishes and to-go pastas.”’What we’re really going to try to do is not be a traditional Italian-style pasta place,’ Fallen said, adding that they’ll lean into using the produce, meats, and cheeses that Ellwood’s keeps in stock. ‘We want to come up with creative and delicious things that we can pair with pasta.’” (Richmond BizSense)

FUN NEWS

Chalk full of sweet sentiments: Chalk Up the Town is back this Friday, May 6, to spread a little colorful joy throughout the streets of Carytown. Pick up some chalk from one of these participating shops, and let those creative juices flow from your fingertips! “All levels of art talent are encouraged to show off their work or simply write something kind on the sidewalks of Carytown.” (Instagram)

You’ll like this berry much: The Strawberry Street Festival is back this Saturday, May 7, and celebrating William Fox Elementary School’s new home at Clark Springs Elementary School. The event will feature strawberries (but of course), food trucks, bounce houses, live music, carnival games, and more. Attendees can also take a tour of Clark Springs at noon, 1, and 2. (Style Weekly)

Richmond is having a field day (literally): The Higher Achievement Young Professionals Board and BrownGreer are hosting Field Day RVA 2022 on Saturday, May 14. The community fundraising event will be held at Bon Secours Training Center and feature junior-high-inspired activities like a water balloon toss, relay races, capture the flag, corn hole, and tug of war. There will also be prizes, music, beer and food trucks, and more. (Eventbrite)

This’ll leave a mark: Joe Fessman, owner of Yellow Bird Tattoo in the Fan, recently signed the lease at a shop next door. Yellow Bird Tat 2 will be his original spot’s sister space, featuring a coworking aspect. “What I’m looking for is a shared coworking space where [tattoo] artists can come in and pay a rental [fee] and do their work,” he told Richmond BizSense. Look out for its grand opening in July. (Richmond BizSense)
