Ed 246: Block Parties, Bike Shop, Children’s Museum Tickets

Hi, RVAx members!👋

It’s me! Kelsey! I’m back from maternity leave! WOW, I can’t believe we were smack-dab in the middle of the holiday hustle and bustle when we last caught up here. Let’s see; what do we need to exchange notes on?:

  • The White Lotus, Season 2: Def better than Season 1, right?

  • Something about Prince Harry and frostbite…?

  • Rihanna’s pregnant again?!

Okay, that oughta cover the gist of it.

How about that Sam Kanipe (re)takeover while I was OOO? The woman’s still got it, ow! I practically felt like I was living in San Diego again and getting the first-dibs scoop on all the need-to-know people, places, and things the River City has to offer. But, like, with kids and a sleep deficit.

… Still! Almost exactly the same vibe! ANYway. Speaking of those RVA people, places, and things: It’s time to get this midweek party started.

Keep scrolling for RVA's latest social news, including spring cleaning tips and tricks, a beverage crawl, a film festival, and more.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Erin Keene: Second Bottle, one of our fave wine shops in the city, just celebrated its second anniversary, so what better time than now to S/O the woman who makes it all happen? Erin owns the *very cute* corner spot in Church Hill and takes care to add the most charming details here and there, including handwritten tags adorning the bottles to highlight their flavor profiles, FREE Thursday wine tastings (from 5 - 7 pm), and occasional visits from the shop pup, Cooper! Stop by ASAP to grab a couple bottles. (We’re loving ourselves a Dinamico situation rn.)

SOCIAL NEWS

Get your Gaines on: If these warmer temps of late have you in the mood for a little spring cleaning, we know just the thing to give you an extra boost of refresh inspiration. The Richmond Home and Garden Show happens this Friday through Sunday, March 3 through 5. Head to the Richmond Raceway for three days of “all things spring home improvement and landscape design with access to more than 200 exhibitors, including an array of local and national home remodeling and construction professionals and garden and landscaping experts who can help you create the home you’ve always wanted, whether that’s a relaxing backyard retreat or a kitchen, bathroom, garage, or total home renovation.” This season’s show also features two presentations from HGTV personality Mike Pyle. Spring training is in full ~swing~: And that means there’s already lots of baseball to enjoy as the official start to the season approaches. The Richmond Flying Squirrels are (ofc) getting in on the action, hosting Nutzy’s Block Party this Saturday, March 4. From 11 am to 2 pm, hang at The Diamond and enjoy live music, food trucks, and vendors, and get a head start on booking your calendar with the purchase of single-game tickets. (Facebook)

Speaking of block parties: The Richmond SPCA has one lined up for the end of the month. On Saturday, March 25, lace up your running, jogging, or walking shoes, and join the city’s other dog lovers for the 21st annual Dog Jog, 5K, and Block Party. The event will take place at the Richmond SPCA’s Robins-Starr Humane Center and feature an outdoor marketplace with kids and pets zones, vendors, live music, and more. And by the by, the Richmond SPCA wanted us to pass along code RICHMONDEXPERIENCE23, which takes $10 off Dog Jog or 5K registration in-person and virtual options! (RunSignup)

Oh, what a world: Earth Day is just around the corner (mark your calendars for April 22!), but there’s never really a *bad* time to celebrate our planet and learn a thing or two (or more) about it. One days-long way to do that? The RVA Environmental Film Festival! The movie marathon of sorts returns just before spring does, running from March 10 through March 21 and showcasing nearly two dozen flicks that highlight environmental issues facing Richmond, the Mid-Atlantic, and Earth as a whole. Catch a film at the Science Museum of Virginia’s Dome theater, the Byrd Theatre, and other spots around the River City. (RVA Environmental Film Festival)

Libbie Mill - Midtown is on a roll: Blue Ridge Cyclery is setting up shop in the ever-growing shopping center. While an official launch date is still in the works, the bike store plans to start things off by opening a temporary space “in the 2,717 square foot Suite 165 of the Penstock Quarter Building, adjacent to [solidcore] and Capital Eye Care.” (RVAHub)

Children’s Museum of Richmond

While this winter has been mostly mild (SHHH! KNOCK ON WOOD! SHHH!), if history’s any guide, we’ll likely still feel some chilly temps well into the start of spring. Luckily, there are lots of great indoor options in RVA to keep you and your little ones entertained while we wait for some beach weather to come our way. The Children’s Museum is one of our favorites of those indoor options.

This week, we’re giving away two tickets to the fun-and-educational spot on Broad St!

To enter, tell us: What social media site celebrates its 17th anniversary this March?

Last week:
Congratulations to last edition’s winner, Allison G., for winning a $20 gift card to The Smoky Mug. Enjoy that chai latte and BBQ taco!
