Ed 247: International Women’s Day, Vegan-Cheese Pizza, Mini Pancakes
Happy International Women’s Day!
Mother Nature is really feeling the reason for the season with the weather this week, and we do appreciate it, Mom! It’s getting us way in the mood for all things St. Patrick’s Day, Monument Avenue 10K, and iced coffee.
LOL, JK – I’m an “Every Season is Iced Coffee Season” girlie. But the spring-y temps really up the ante! I may as well be back at JMU and skipping class to lay out on the Quad, you know?
JK again! I never did that so many times one semester that a professor told me to cool it before she fails me!
So, in celebration of womankind, I’m kicking things off up top with a few “I love this” links to posts from some local ladies:
Reminder for moms from Becca Campbell at Little Z’s
Vegan mac and “cheese” from Liz Thomson at I Heart Vegetables

Josiyah Giles: The professional boxer recently inspired a bourbon whiskey from Reservoir Distillery (in partnership with Vintage Boxing Gym): Guardian of the Gloves. Proceeds from the first round of bottle sales went straight to the athlete’s training fund, which, in turn – as Reservoir puts it – supports the “development of a mission that can bolster the success of others in our hometown.” Keep an eye out for the second round here. And in the meantime, Josiyah’s next match is Saturday, March 18; learn more about snagging tix (or simply donating to his cause!) here.

SOCIAL NEWS
A toast to the queens: Three Notch’d Brewing Company is launching a limited edition juicy IPA in honor of International Women’s Day. The bev – Queen of Clouds – is available at each of the brewery’s locations, and every pint sold gives $1 to support the Pink Boots Society’s mission in “assisting, inspiring, and encouraging women and non-binary individuals in the fermented/alcoholic beverage profession.” Grab a draft or four-pack of the pink-hue brew today while supplies last. (Facebook)
Take us out to the ball game: The Richmond Flying Squirrels are kicking off their 2023 season on Friday, April 7, at 6:35 pm. For the last TWELVE years, tickets for the home opener have sold out, so don’t be nutty — snag your seats now. Post-game fireworks are on the agenda for a little more opening-night celebration after the final inning. (MiLB)
Tombstone could never: Evan Byrnes of The Hop Craft Pizza & Beer has started selling frozen vegan-cheese pizza – Udderless Pizza – in various markets around the city, including Ellwood Thompson’s, Good Foods Grocery, The Stables Market, and Lombardy Market. The pies’ cashew-based cheese was the product of Evan’s trial and error in the kitchen after the spot’s original source for vegan cheese, UnMoo, closed up shop in 2021. The pizza offshoot currently offers Greek pizza, vegan pepperoni pizza, and plain cheese pizza, with potential plans to add a Sicilian pizza or pineapple pizza to the mix. (Richmond BizSense)
If you’re looking for a kid-free evening: Movieland recently instituted a new rule for its under-17 crowd – no service after 7:30 pm. The rule comes after an influx of customer requests, but it’s receiving positive and negative feedback; some movie-goers are glad they can catch a late-night flick without teens around, while others are bummed they can’t take their teenage kids to see a movie much later than your standard dinnertime. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
That food-hall vibe: After an initial open date planned for last summer, ghost kitchen and food biz incubator, ChefSuite, is set to open this month – Wednesday, March 15. The spot will feature 16 rentable, 200- to 400-square-foot spaces for restaurateurs to rent for six, nine, or 12 months at a time and grow their food concepts. Tenants can use the space to focus on their marketing, operations, finances, or other pieces of their businesses. Latin Quarter recently posted about its first week in the new digs, and we’re very excited to pay them a visit. (Richmond magazine)
Selling, like, (mini) hot cakes: Chiki’s Pancakes celebrated the grand opening of its Regency Mall storefront last weekend. When you’re in the mood for mini pancakes (are you ever not?), you can pop over to the new space and order a stack – they’re open every day from 11 am to 6 pm. (They cater weddings and other private events, too, by the way!) (Instagram)
