Ed 318: Chips & Salsa, Trivia Night, Tax-Free Weekend
Hello there!
Folks, I’m on beach time. Not because I’m literally at the beach, but because this summer’s wearing your girlie out, and I need to channel some beachy zen to keep calm and carry on until we hit that brief period in, like, September when it’s not feeling like there’s one thing to do after another!
So, to get to that headspace, I’ve been calling on Don Sebastian recently. Beach trips in *my* life have always included chips and salsa on the menu, and when it comes to the salsa in particular, Don Sebastian is as close as you can get to paradise, IMO. Don’t judge me, but… I’d pour myself a glass and drink that stuff straight, quite honestly. Catch me housing chipfuls of that between now and Labor Day, and stock your fridge in the meantime, too. Happy “vacationing,” lol.

SOCIAL NEWS
Brunch fans, rejoice!: RVA Brunch Weekend is right around the corner (happening September 6 through 8), and the folks behind it just dropped the schedj, which is dripping with all kinds of syrup-y goodness, plus. The line-up of 30+ restaurants participating this year includes Brambly Park, Bar West, The Hill Cafe, River City Roll, The Daily Kitchen & Bar, and so many more. (Instagram)
Olive us love olive this: Richmond Olive Oil just set up shop and opened its doors in Carytown this week. Owner Robert Granados is an olive oil sommelier, and his store (currently) offers more than 40 different infused olive oils and balsamic vinegars, food items, beer, and wine. The spot’s within walking distance of Ellwood Thompson’s and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, so we’re thinkin’ you grab your groceries, dressings, and dessert, and invite us over to your place for din? No? Everything but that last part? It’s your amazing evening; you call the shots! (Instagram)
Scorpio Rising is closing its doors today, July 31: Said salon owner Audra Dye in her announcement about the update, “It has been a fulfilling and life-lesson-packed four years for me as an owner. Even though I am shutting this location down, it has been a very rewarding experience that I would never regret regardless of my decision to close.” She also noted she’d be continuing to offer services at Haus Salon Studios, starting next week. You can reach her at (804) 495-1541 to book an appointment, and if Tamika was your go-to specialist, you can keep in touch with her at (804) 313-6699 or NailedMYWay@gmail.com. (Press release)
Remembering Richmond’s history: Shockoe Institute has plans to further memorialize Richmond’s part in the history of slavery. With the help of an $11 mil grant from the Mellon Foundation, the project will center RVA in the ongoing national convo about monuments, America’s cultural landscape, and more. The project has a ways to go, with plans to officially open the Institute to the public at the end of 2025, but work is just about underway now, starting with converting a 10,000-square-foot section of Main Street Station into the spot’s home, including exhibition space and history-studying space. (Washington Post)
The case of the missing yellow rain jacket: Get Tight Lounge elevated a Richmonder’s plea to get his yellow rain jacket back, after the local started his search in r/rva, saying he’d lost his threads at the party spot earlier in the weekend — and would happily offer a six-pack, pit-beef sammie, or a cold-hard 20 bucks for its safe return. From what we can tell, that has yet to happen, so we’re lending our voice to the cause here and enjoying the wholesome/chuckle-worthy comments section(s) in the meantime:
“The jacket may be gone, but the PFAS and the memories will last forever…”
“I wish I could help more, but I am fully invested in the outcome of this story now. Please update when you can, OP.”
“This was written like a novel, I didn't know a post about a lost jacket could be so poetic. As a fellow chronic loser of beloved items, I hope it returns to them soon!”
“Raincoats are an old wives tale. They merely are for looks. A umbrella is the real deal.”
“Reddit blows ass. And not in a good way.” (Reddit, Instagram)
La Cantina is now open!: ICYM our Reel last week, there’s a new tequila-cocktails-tacos situation that needs your attention. Things are popping off on the second floor of The Veil Brewing Co.’s Forest Hill location, where the home of Y Tu Mamá is now dishing out even more delish eats and drinks. Stop by on Fridays from 4 - 10 pm and Saturdays from 2 - 10 pm for things like agave-centered sips or draft margs, and more. (Instagram)
