Hello, folks!
I’ve been doing some housekeeping of sorts recently and going through the archives on our website over here to find spots where we can get a li’l extra dusting and vacuuming and pillow-fluffing in. We’ve got some fun ideas on the content calendar ahead, but as I was looking back on some early-af editions of the Insider, I noticed: A. the featured images up top from you and other Richmonders have always been fire-flames, and B. this newsletter has ebbed and flowed over the years, but it’s always been such a cutie midweek pick-me-up, you could’ve practically foregone your Wednesday coffee for years now, if we do say so ourselves!
But we’d never really suggest that — go refill and get back to reading; there are some things you’re gonna wanna know. (And if you want a little kick of nostalgia, take a peek at the archives yourself; it’s a trip.)
Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including handcrafted items from artists around the world, a location update for The Smoky Mug, a reader rec, and more.

THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
End-of-summer plans incoming: Daverro Gelato will host its grand opening on Saturday, September 7. The soon-to-debut gelato shop in Lakeside will serve gelato (ofc), hot and cold drinks, nut spreads, and chocolates, and the spot, per its latest Insta update, plans to have more details in the near future about special events, including pop-ups in the shop’s outdoor seating area. (Instagram)
More room for meats and eats: The Smoky Mug has plans in the works for a new space. The Northside spot, known for delivering on flavor and hospitality through both cafe and BBQ concepts, will continue to sling sliders and such at its current location, until April 2025, when it will move all its biz and operations to 2930 North Ave. The new space will have twice as much room for dining, lounging, bar-seating, an in-house bakery situation, and more. (Instagram)
Where to shop: Boutique shop The Lioness is bringing its unique, handcrafted items from artists around the world to a storefront in Bellevue. An official opening date is still in the works, but owner Kristina made the exciting announcement on Instagram recently and noted that it’s been a long time coming. To prep, she’s also been traveling and collecting all kinds of goodies for you to shop when you stop by. (Instagram)
Tequila!: The brains behind The Veil Brewing Co and Y Tu Mama just cannot quit these days. Yet another amazing offering from the two delish Richmond spots is on the horizon. Motso Tequila, which officially launches this Wednesday, August 14, is a tequila created by some folks (including the head brewer) of @theveilbrewing and the founders of @ytumama.mx. For now, you can special order it at any ABC store. (Instagram)
Let this be your sign to give us your suggestion(s)!: You know we love when you members reach out with ideas for who, what, where, and more to highlight in the Insider (or elsewhere!), and we recently got the scoop from a reader that we thought deserved a reshare. Jo O. brought our attention to Culture Encounters, a local org —founded by Amma Gatty — whose vision is to create a world where we respect, appreciate, and celebrate people from cultures different from our own. The org hosts many engaging events, but one of particular note is the inaugural Richmond International Dance Festival, the only multicultural dance festival in the city, which includes youth and adult dance workshops throughout the day, a food fair, vendors, and a culminating show where all participating groups will perform as one.
