Ed 79: Winter, Dessertery, Kombucha
This edition of the Weekly Insider is proudly brought to you by Chop Chop RVA!
Hey there!
This photo above was perfectly captioned “When seasons collide”. How bizarre to get snow in mid-November but thankfully it is gone as quick as it came. This week we’ve got a lot of national headlines highlighting the beer scene, a dessertery coming early next year, and kombucha pouring in North Side. Plus a fun giveaway, a relaxing member perk, and of course top events. Let’s go —
THE LATEST:
SOCIAL NEWS
Winter is coming and we’re not just talking about the Fall snow we experienced yesterday. SWITCH, a rotating-themed bar, debuted their Game of Thrones theme on Saturday complete with murals and 3D elements primarily found in the North of this popular HBO show. Enter through the gates of the Night’s Watch, wander through Winterfell, and explore Stark’s Castle. Sip on cocktails like The White Walker, Bloody Bastard, Fire & Ice, or The North Remembers. They open at 5pm Tuesday through Sunday. Bundle up!
A car vending machine might find its way to Westwood Ave, the second time this concept is being considered for Richmond. Carvana is an online car buying experience with the option to have your vehicle delivered to your door, or pick it up at a local vending machine. The tower proposed for Westwood Ave would be twelve stories. After a vehicle is purchased the buyer is provided with a token which can then be taken to the vending machine to retrieve the vehicle. According to Richmond Bizsense, this would be the largest Carvana vending machine built to date. The current largest is a nine-story machine in Tempe, Arizona. (Richmond BizSense)
We are getting a craft dessert market, I repeat, a locally sourced craft dessert market is coming. The Dessertery will carry an array of sweet treats included their housemade boozy cupcakes by Lush Cupcakes, cheesecakes by Geescakes, ice pops from King of Pops, dog treats by Allie Bones, baking kits by Pastry Base, nitro coffee by Snowing in Space, sweets and gelati from Superior Creamery and Confections, and more. Look for this to open in early 2020, location to be announced soon!
Late night pho will soon be available in Carytown at Pho Luca, taking over the former Hai Ya’ll. Til midnight everyday Pho Luca will serve pho and other Vietnamese dishes with lots of vegetable options. This should open soon as the new owners plan to make minimal changes to the current space. (Richmond BizSense)
More beverages are headed for North Side but this time it’s kombucha! Ninja Kombucha is planting roots for the first time after four years of successful market pop ups and building a cult-like following. The building, located at 126 W. Brookland Park Boulevard, will include production and a tasting room. (Richmond Mag)
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
the boozy edition
The Top 50 Best American Breweries of the 2010s by Paste Magazine was just released and you know Richmond made the list! Triple Crossing ranked 16th, Paste writes, “Today, the city can boast a strong array of IPA producers, both heralded (The Veil) and underknown (Final Gravity Brewing Co.), but the city’s strongest overall brewery usually seems to find itself somewhere in the middle. Those in the know seem to recognize that Triple Crossing represents a special confluence of elements that appeal to both the masses and devotees of the idiosyncratic, but at the same time the brewery often fails to receive credit for just how outstanding each new release can be expected to be.” Way to go, Triple Crossing!
PBR stands for Pabst Blue Ribbon but it also stands for “peoples beer of Richmond” and our bars have the title to prove it. Every year Pabst publishes a list of the top 100 on-premise sellers and this year Sticky Rice ranked 82 and Gwar Bar ranked 64. This is the first time Gwar Bar made the list and the third for Sticky Rice.
Garden and Gun published the “Beer Drinkers Guide to Richmond” with the help of An Bui, Chief Beer Officer, of Mekong and owner of The Answer. He takes you through a guided tour of his favorite Richmond breweries and the beer he suggests you order at each. Give it a read, and find out if he covers your favorites. Cheers!
