Hey there!

If you’ve got travel plans for the holiday remember to wash your hands often! According to the CDC the flu has hit hard and early this year, particularly in the Southern states. If you’re staying in or around Richmond, there is plenty happening. Check out the event calendar and don’t miss the NYE guide so you can make plans!

What does Hardywood and Wawa have in common? Apparently, it’s beer! The gas and convenient store giant reached out to Hardywood after launching a similar concept with PA brewery, 2SP, last year. Under their guidance, Wawa decided to expand their seasonal craft beer offerings this year and chose to partner with local brewery, Hardywood. As of this Friday, you can stop into most area Wawas and snag the new Coffee Cake Stout, a breakfast stout with the flavor of fresh coffee cake using Wawa’s winter reserve coffee blend along with coconut, vanilla bean, cinnamon spice, brown sugar, and notes of sweet clove, graham cracker, and dark chocolate! If you’re into stouts, don’t miss Hardywood’s Christmas Morning made with the Mexican Chiapas roast from Black Hand Coffee Co. Cheers!

Westover Station in Forest Hill will become The Westover according to this Richmond-Times Dispatch article.  Look for them to focus on coffee, breakfast, brunch and lunch.  Simultaneously, The Hill Standard, a development that will include The Veil Brewing Co., Blanchards, Charm School, BOHO, and apartments, is making progress across the street.  These are exciting changes for the Forest Hill neighborhood! (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Our friends at River City Food Tours (RCFT) put together a Richmond-based gift guide and its packed with inspiration for everything from food to adventure to shows and more! You’ll see some of our personal favs in there too like fellow RVAx member Liz Thomson’s vegetarian cookbook. When you buy 3 RCFT gift certificates, you get 1 free! Plus there might be a discount code for our RVAx One Year Membership gift.

Kehinde Wiley, Mayor Stoney, Governor Northam, and others along with the public gathered yesterday at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) for the unveiling of Rumors of War, an “artistic response to the ubiquitous Confederate sculptures that populate the United States” per a press release from the VMFA. The sculpture returned to Richmond for permanent installation after being on display in Times Square in New York City where hundreds of thousands viewed the work. Wiley said he was inspired to create the sculpture after visiting Richmond in 2016 for the opening of Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic. The sculpture will permanently sit at the entrance of the VMFA on Arthur Ashe Boulevard.

Don’t miss this flash sale from Altria Theatre! Wicked is returning to Richmond June 3-14 and from now through December 13 you can snag tickets! Use code “HOLIDAYFLASH” to secure your tickets (hint: makes a great gift for that theater lover in your life). Tickets will be on sale at a later date but might as well grab them now while you still can. (NBC 12)

While it’s been illegal to text or email while driving, Richmond just recently passed a bill stating it will be illegal to hold a phone whatsoever while operating a vehicle. NBC 12 reports police can pull you over if you are seen with a phone in your hands, even if you are stopped at a red light. The bill was passed earlier this month but will not take effect until June 1, 2020 in order to give everyone time to learn about the new law. Consider yourself warned and might as well go hands free now, if you’re not already. (NBC 12)
