SOCIAL NEWS

Big things are coming to Richmond in 2020 and here’s your official watch list:

  • The Belleville, a food hall with 15+ vendors along with the new Veil Brewing taproom, two wine/cocktail bars, and rooftop in Scott’s Addition to open sometime this year

  • The new taproom for Bryant’s Cider should open within the next month or so

  • A yet-to-be-named winery, park, and restaurant also on Belleville St in Scott’s Addition opening in the Spring

  • The Hill Standard, a development including The Veil Brewing Southside serving beer, wine, and cider, Pepes Mexican Restaurant, Charm School Study Hall, a fourth Stella’s grocery, a third BOHO cycle studio, and a second Blanchards coffee shop along with some apartments is expected to open sometime this year

  • Ukrops Food Hall opening in the Fall

  • Carytown Exchange expects to have several retailers open by the Fall/Winter of this year

  • Rally, a pickleball-bar and restaurant in Manchester is slated to break ground in the Spring (though not likely opening til early 2021)

We frequently discuss how these big developments will continue to change and shape Richmond as we know it. As folks from NOVA (short for Northern Virginia) and beyond continue to flock to to the area, the demand for unique entertainment and dining options continues to rise. It’s hard to say what we are most excited about!

As for what we lost, in 2019 and even early this year, we said goodbye to some long time establishments that helped pave the way in our dining scene. Pasture closed last June and as of yesterday Comfort announced it’s closing. According to Richmond Magazine, 41 restaurants closed their doors throughout the year including Little Saint, Pearl Raw Bar, and Champion Brewing to name a few. Meanwhile, 103 restaurants and eatertainment establishments opened. (Richmond Magazine)

Not drinking? This taproom is for you! Ninja Kombucha quietly opened their ‘boocha taproom at the end of November and we have it on good authority that they are reaching their stride. In addition to their usual offerings like lemon ginger, Ninja has started to branch out with more experimental flavors like tumeric ginger cinnamon. Located in Northside, they are also offering kombucha brewing classes if you’re interested in making your own. Cheers!

ICYMI: Whole Foods is opening at the end of this month (January 30 at 9am to be specific). Apparently people are really excited about this as the news, shares, and posts littered our social feeds yesterday. Personally we would have preferred a Trader Joes but if you’re a Whole Foods lover then it’s time to celebrate.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Richmond named one of the Best Places to Travel in 2020! Granted, we were chosen as the “Best for Booze Hounds,” TripSaavy did a fine job highlighting some of the best spots for cocktails including Saison, The Jasper, and Brenner Pass along with a number of great breweries like Vasen and Tabol. Our neighbor, D.C., nabbed “Best for History Buffs” (isn’t that usually our thing!?), Rwanda was “Best for Bucket List," while Rome was “Best for Romance” and Bangok was “Best for Fine Dining.” Check out the full list here.
