Just when we thought Richmond couldn’t be growing any faster, there’s not one but TWO huge developments announced. From a casino to a surf park, our heads are reeling from all the plans. Plus we’ve got lots of coffee updates and another eatertainment headed to Scott’s Addition. Onward…

In some of the biggest news over the past week was the announcement of a potential casino, restaurants, and hotel to be located in Manchester. WHOA - we did not see this one coming! As a New Jersey native growing up near Atlantic City I must admit it’s interesting. I spent plenty of nights dining at various casino restaurants, learning games like blackjack and craps, and having fun with friends. Even as I age, I often see friends and family taking trips down to Atlantic City for a girls’ night out, date night, or parent’s night out and I wonder if a casino establishment here in Richmond would offer the same type of escape. It seems this project has a very long way to go starting with approval from the state so don’t get too excited just yet but definitely bookmark this. (Richmond BizSense)
The other big news? A surf park. CoStar, a company that provides commercial real estate information with an office here in Richmond, announced last week that Chesterfield is getting the world’s largest surf park. Not only that, but the development (to be called “The Lake”) will include “150,000 square feet of retail and entertainment, 100,000 square feet of office space, a 170-key hotel, 750 apartments, a 13-acre artificial Wake Lake, an amphitheater and a six-acre water park, capable of generating artificial waves large enough to surf” according to their post. The developer, Flatwater Cos., plans to host around 200 events annually and hopes to make The Lake a one-of-a-kind destination on the East Coast. The Lake will be located across from River City Sportsplex with the first phase opening next Fall.
Skee-ball, bowling, shuffleboard and now...axe-throwing! Scott’s Addition is the land of endless craft beer and entertainment so why not toss axe-throwing into the mix!? National chain Bad Axe is aiming for an upscale lounge vibe and will be situated across from The Circuit Arcade Bar. (Richmond BizSense)
From Chesterfield to Cary Street, Roastology café and coffee roastery has new digs in the city and the space looks stunning! The deep green walls, natural light from the full wall of windows, caramel-colored leather seating in front of a fireplace, and natural wood accents makes it a truly dreamy spot to enjoy a latte. After eight years serving the Chesterfield community Roastology has made a new home in the space between Carytown and The Fan and you don’t want to miss it. Located at 2701 Cary St open 6am-4pm Monday through Friday and from 8am-4pm on Saturday.
Speaking of coffee, you can grab a free cup tomorrow, January 23 from 7am till 11am at Blanchard’s on Broad Street courtesy of Whole Foods. Whole Foods opens on Thursday, January 30 at 9am.
Southside is getting yet another beloved Richmond sister restaurant! The Continental Westhampton located in the Near West End will be opening The Continental Manchester according to this article from Richmond BizSense. As if that’s not exciting enough, their team plans to open a market next door (Stella’s Grocery?). Continental serves one of our favorite, healthy brunch dishes known as Maria’s Cast Iron with broccolini, mushrooms, onions, carrots, zuchini, cauliflower, celery, potatoes, and asiago cheese (we add a fried egg on top) SO GOOD. USA Today published 10 of the best food and wine festivals the southeast has to offer - any guesses? Fire, Flour, and Fork (FFF) of course! This year the multi-day festival takes place November 5-8. Going into its seventh year, FFF offers over three dozen events over the course of four days including everything from themed-dinners, drag brunches, chocolate pairing, workshops and beyond. Other festivals on the list include Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival, Charleston Wine + Food, and Chow Chow in Asheville.
