Get a free donut this Saturday when you show up to any Gelati Celesti shop between 9am-noon wearing your pajamas. Why, you ask? In celebration of National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day! Gelati Celesti Ice Cream will open early on Saturday, February 1 and start scooping ice cream at 9am. Customers wearing pajamas will get a free local donut with the purchase of their ice cream. If you choose to skip the pajamas in favor of more traditional garb, you can still purchase a donut for $1.00. Blanchard’s coffee will also be available. Visit any of their five locations: 8906 A West Broad St in the West End, 11805 West Broad St in Short Pump, 3004 Stony Point Road at Stony Point, 1400 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd in Scott’s Addition, and 5808 Grove Avenue at Libbie and Grove.
Tune into Triple D this Friday at 9pm to catch another local spot, ZZQ! The episode, Smokin’ Hot BBQ, will feature a chicken joint in Canada, a wing place in Vermont, and our very own Texas-style BBQ spot right here in RVA. “Our pitmaster Chris Fultz, aka Texas, shows Guy how our famous Habanero Fontina sausage is made and uses it in the “off menu” version of our wildly popular Tres Hombres Sandwich” writes ZZQ in this post. As you probably know, Guy Fieri was spotted around town in September filming for Diners, Drive-In, and Dives. Soul Taco, Pops Market on Grace, The Fancy Biscuit, and Perly’s have all been featured since then. You can stream each of these episodes on Hulu.
Last night Mayor Levar Stoney spoke to the city in the annual State of the City address at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. If you missed it live, you can catch the re-run on the city’s YouTube page. It may take a day or so for officials to upload it. In other city news, Navy Hill continues to be a hot topic for the mayor and council. Mark Robinson at the Richmond-Times Dispatch sums up everything that happened at Monday’s council meeting. And lastly, the East Coast Hockey League endorsed locating a team to Richmond should the Navy Hill project proceed according to NBC12.
A new stadium beer and wine are being released this season for the Richmond Flying Squirrels! Chin Music, an amber lager, will retire as the stadium beer after being offered for the past six years. Again collaborating with Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU), the new beer is a grapefruit shandy and will be called Richmond Rally Cap, a name selected from a group of four finalists submitted by fans. Production of the beer will begin in March. More of a wine lover? New this year will be a canned wine collaboration made by New Kent Winery! Feelin’ Squirrelly is a white wine with natural flavors and a hint of peach. Both Rally Cap and Feelin’ Squirrelly will debut on opening day Thursday, April 16. The home-opener has been a sell-out event for the past 10 seasons so don’t wait to grab your tickets.
NATIONAL
Looking for beer and wine in Richmond? If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to Garden Grove Brewery and Urban Winery then you should make it a point to visit again soon. Recently featured in October, a national beer magazine, Garden Grove is highlighted for being a brewery moonlighting as a winery. According to the article, “the interest in fermenting grapes largely originated with the company’s co-owner and head brewer Mike Brandt, who had experience as a viticulturist and a winemaker. Brandt passed away suddenly in November, but his creative spirit continues to inform the direction of the business.” Several local breweries have banded together to brew a beer in his memory per Eileen Mellon of Richmond Mag. The beer will be released on February 10.
Thrillist released their list of Best Breweries in Richmond featuring Garden Grove, Hardywood, Triple Crossing, Ardent, Three Notch’d, Veil, Vasen, and The Answer. Find out which beers they recommend at each here.
